Landon Slone leading Ky in FG%
#1
IMO this is some accomplishment for a guard to lead the state in FG%. Usually its a big man who shoots around the basket. Landon's shots usually come from 15ft on out except for the ocassional layup. Congrats Landon!
#2
wow that is pretty suprising...Congrats Landon.

It sure is. He musta had a heckuva game tonite, as of yesterday, he was about 15th, almost a full tenth of a point behind the leader. Great job, no matter. Another good looking stat was that he was near the very top in shots attempted, among those in the leaders of FG %.

That's cool. I wasn't disputing it, just thought that was an awful big jump for one game.

Actually Landon is shooting 61.6% from the field. Shane Grimm is hitting 65% of his shots. So I find it hard to see how they have him leading the state when he isn't even leading his team.
Both guys are shooting tremendously though!

Glad someone else read it the same way I did. I was starting to question my Tiger Education. I was jus tryin to be a lil more subtle than you. Big Grin
As you said, tho, outstanding stats for both of them.

Landon is the best pure shooter in the region and one of the top in the state. The majority of Grimm's shots come near the basket where he plays his best. Landon is shooting awesome from far out. Great job to both players though.

However, with that being said, I would remind the Tigers that everyone on the Tiger team has a role and as long as they stay focused on their role they will do well. They must remember TEAM play and feed off of each other. That is why they do so well. The Tigers can't win the region with just Landon, just Grimm, just Bundy, just Murray, just Vanhoose. They must play together!! The balance is hard to defend.

Honestly, thats only due to the fact that not all teams turn in thier stats. I'm sure he it up there, but would almost be certain out of 200+ other teams in the state, thay some big man somewhere shoots 65%+ since they possibly get fouled and go to the line often.

All the statistic categories for field goal %, 3 point % and free throw % have a minimum amount of shots before they consider you as a state leader. My senior year I was ranked 12th in the state in free throw percentage after the first 6 games. Two weeks later I wasn't in it because I hadn't shot enough free throws.

Most teams in the state do turn in their stats and as I pointed out, Landon isn't in the top 5 maybe not top 10, but is surely near tops for guards. Grimm for Paintsville is 4th in state I believe. Can't remember who but state leader is around 74%.

The best pure shooter I have seen is Marcus Birchfield at Scott County, at the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass with the likes of St. Anthony's of NJ (#2 Ranked team nationally) and other nationally top ranked teams with many D-1 signees with schools such as Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, he won the shooting accuracy competition and the speed dribbling competition, only problem is he is 5-11, and with Scott County's roster the last few years, the starting guards have always been 6-3, 6-4, 6-5, he only plays roughly 6 minutes per game for a team that no one in the 15th region could start for. Not bashing the 15th region, just bringing to realization the state power that Scott County is, you bring Valley, Paintsville or Pikeville into the 11th region, they go .500 in the region, maybe. Its different each night when you have to play Lex Catholic, Bryan Station, Henry Clay, Madison Central, Scott County, Tates Creek.

Tonight Scott County put away a solid Gaineville Purple Hurricane squad (78-66 and led by as many as 18) that had beaten Clay County by 29 the night before.

I was referrin to what you said about how could Landon be leadin the state in FG % when he isn't even leadin his own team, NOT knowin that Grimm was ranked above him in the state.

Your post looks very informed until a person actually researches and finds out that of these teams you list Scott co. has only played one of them and they lost. At least Paintsville has a better record against those same teams at 1-1.
But hey.....everyone has opinions.

After the game tonight on ch 5 (Harold) they (Don't know the guy's name) said Landon Slone was leading the state in scoring. I tried to check the khsaa website and I couldn't get it to bring up the boys stats leaders, just the girls, even when I clicked on the boys link it kept bringing up the girls stat leaders. So I took ch. 5 at their word. If this info is wrong then I'm sorry. I would not post anything I didn't believe to be the truth.

I stand corrected, Henry Clay is listed, but Lafayette is not on your list you originally made.
And trust me...if Paintsville was in the 11th region, They might have a player over 6'3"!
Everyone knows that Scott Co. is only a great program because of Toyota. It allows Scott Co to have much more to offer in athletics and Scott Co. can spend more dollars in one classroom than Paintsville can on K-12.
But if you think Paintsville couldn't compete with Scott Co. Then I respect it. But in all honesty....There is absolutely no reason that Paintsville should be able to. But I would wager that Scott Co would know they had a game that night.
#23
Trust me, you are correct about the money they have, population here is still booming and Scott County will not allow another high school to be built. Instead they built a 9th grade school "to help transition the kids into high school". My stepson is one of 675 freshman, that would mean over 2500 kids in one high school. They love thier athletics here for sure.

Last years boys team has a starter on the Marshall Thundering Herd now and the girls team has a bench player for the Tar Heels (recently injured though), oh yeah, and a crack dealing MR. Basketball candidate for 2008.

Our property taxes here are ridiculous along with the thousands of new homes in subdivisions popping up in Scott County over the last few years, the Schools should be the most well equipped in the state. When they needed to build a new middle school a couple of years ago, they built it a half mile from another one, population density is very heavy around I-75.
#24
My sister works at Toyota and has for about 12 years. She just bought a house like .10 miles from the door she walks into there, and has crapped about the taxes!!! You should always look for those things!!! Women??? LOL

But I just thought it was strange how you went from a kid that was a pure shooter to how nobody in the 15th was worthy of Scott Co.
Not trying to upset you, but I feel there are a few players for some of these lowly teams that will play somewhere from NAIA to Mid Major D-1, but of course Xcott Co. could beat those silly little college teams too.Wink Big Grin

Not necessarily disagreeing with you and I'm not saying that Paintsville is better than Scott Co. But, Paintsville has played Scott Co. in the preseason this year. Didn't look to shabby against them IMO. Not many teams could compete against Scott Co. year in and year out b/c of Toyota. But this year, Paintsville could give several of your region's teams a good game. As for Landon Slone, I'm sure he could find a place on several of the teams in your region if he lived down there. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

Actually Slone is 4th in the state in scoring. But a kid from a mountain team does lead the state in scoring. Johnathan Ferguson, Elliott Co. Is averging 28.8 pts per game through 15 games. Slone is averging 25.5 through 17 games.

I don't know what Slone's FG% is but he's not listed in the top 10 shooters in the state. He's a very good shooter but he would have to shoot better than .625 to break into the top 10.
