Great effort Tigers. Anyone have stats?

Well, I didn't listen or watch this game. Paintsville has some talent and has had basically the same group for the past 4 or 5 years. It's not like the 15th region has had the best talent or the strongest region throughout the state. Maybe everyone has expected too much from this group of young men or maybe it's time for these young men to get together and give Paintsville and Coach Runyon another trip to the sweet sixteen.....Who knows???
I guess time will tell....If this group of Tigers doesn't make it to Rupp, then this team could go down has a disappointment, considering the strength of the 15th region teams in the past few years. I just think that this team could have made it to the state tournament before this year.
What do you all think?

Blake was at home, listening to the game in bed. He will have an MRI Monday, When they get back the results(in about a week), then he will go back to Lex for the Dr. to see them and then they might know something then.

Just got back in from Lexington and here are a few thoughts about the game. Paintsville played about as bad as a team as I've seen them in a while. 19 turnovers in the ball game. Lex. Cath's 2-2-1 press killed them early on with their size and speed. They jumped out to a large lead, some of the Tigers started to put their heads down and I was really suprised the score wasn't worse. Paintsville played 6 guys tonight and the starting 5 probably played every minute but the 30 seconds when V come into the game. Paintsville won the battle on the boards mainly because Lex. Cath couldn't miss. The rim was unkind to the Tigers as they missed shots they normally would hit with their eyes closed. The Tigers got into foul trouble early. By half time 3 Tiger players had 3 fouls(VanHoose, Slone, Murry), Grim had 2, and Pack had 1. The Tigers also had two technicals called on them in the first half. After Slone got his 3rd offensive foul in the first half Coach Runyon was T'd up, then later on in the half the Tiger bench got another. Catholic shot about 15-20 more free throws in the game, and I really think they didn't miss a one. A good team knocks down the gimme's, and the Tigers missed several of their attempts. At the start of the second half Grim picked up his 3rd and 4th foul inside the opening minute on little touch calls. To end the game Paintsville had 4 starters with 4 fouls. Getting into foul trouble that early forced Paintsville to get away from their traditional aggressive play and gave Catholic many open looks because they played back not trying to pick up any more fouls. Not sure of the kids name from LC but he knocked down about 7 threes in the game. Paintsville started to make a run in the 3rd but that was quickly haulted on a nice follow up dunk. Also, when the Tigers were around the basket about 10 shots got put up into the bleachers. LC was trying to block every shot that they could, maybe a head fake to get the guy in the air and try to draw a foul would've helped stop the bleeding. It was a tough opponent but I believe they will finish 3rd at the 5/3rd tourney because Cov. Cath refused to play another game according to Mike Fields. They had a nice trip, beat a couple of teams, got exposed on their weak points so it gives them something to work at in the coming weeks. Good job guys, nothing to drag your heads about. Get well soon Blake.

I really like reading this because of how much Valley plays a press, so knowing that Paintsville was rattled by a press really makes me feel more confident as the season goes on and the chance of Valley and Paintsville playing gets closer.

Paintsville fans need to stop being so down about this game. They played a great team and the game really means nothing in the long run. Paintsville has great talent and will be right in the thick of things when it counts.

Who was the 2nd technical fould called on?

Congrats to the Tigers on a good tournament showing. I think the Tigers should be due some congrats on a good showing. They made it to the final four under some very tough circumstances. I think that the Tigers have played very unselfish ball all season. But to lose your starting point guard AND just the emotional let down to such a loss is hard for a team. Then when you consider that the Tigers were playing LexCath on their home floor..... it speaks for itself. And for anyone that thinks that LexCath is not a top team, check them out. The Tigers played them closer than any Lexington school has this season and they did it with basically 5 guys and didn't even play their best game. What more can you expect from a team going against a LexCath team that has superior talent and depth and is playing on their home floor.

CONGRATS TIGERS ON A WELL PLAYED TOURNEY!!

While your post seems to go a little off topic, in response, SV is no LexCath. I don't mean any disrespect to SV, and a SV and Paintsville game should be a great one, but LexCath is head and shoulders above any 15th Region team when they play their best ball. By the way, SV was blown out last night, so their press must not have worked in NY. We have to keep the 15th Region's teams abilities in perspective. Don't assume because LexCath pressure caused the Tigers some trouble that SV's pressure would do likewise.

We went to the game lastnight. After watchin the Tigers warm-up I knew it was gonna be a long night. The couldn't even get the ball in the hoop then, lol. They looked exhausted before the game even started and after Lex Cath went up 4-0, the Tigers looked like a deer in headlights. Paintsville pretty much on played with 5 players. Zack Viapondo (the 6th man tonight) prolly didn't even play a full minute. I just hope Blake is alright and will be able to play the remainder of the season cause if he don't, we're in a world of hurt unless these boys get into 10 times better shape and can stay outta foul trouble. We could sure use Daniel Meade about right now.

S.V. was beaten by a nationally ranked team. To compare Valley's press to Catholic's Press is a fair comparison but, to compare Lex. Catholic to a 3rd in the Nation ranked team is ridiculous. Not seeing the Paintsville - Lex. Cath. game, I couldn't be sure but, I would bet that "Selfishness" helped get them beat. When they play as a team they can be unstoppable but, when Grimm, Slone, & J.D. Vanhoose do their "Own Thing", they can lose on any given night.
#21
It sounds like the lack of depth killed the Tigers again. It is hard to believe that the Paintsville coaching staff has had four years with this bunch and haven't been able to develope any players to come off the bench. If it weren't for getting Ferguson last year and Murray this year they would be hurting.

Paintsville didn't play selfish against Lex Cath and none of em did their "Own Thing". There might have been a few times in the first half that all of em made a selfish play on the offensive side but that was only because they were tryin to get somethin goin when they were down like 12-0. Paintsville needed a good butt kickin like this IMO. They have been playin good ball all year against some so so teams and a couple good teams. This tourney was a great prelude to what can happen in the Sweet 16, playin 3 games in 3 days. I won't be doin any complainin when Runyon runs their butts off from here on out. They realize they gotta get in much better shape if they wanna make a good post season run and especially get by Valley. Right now Valley would prolly run the Tigers outta gym for teh simple fact that they are in 10 times better shape and they like to run the floor.

Remember when Slone and crew were freshmen and they just about beat Valley in the regional tournament. Everyone basically gave the Tigers the regional title for the next 3 seasons. They have not won anything and it is always selfish play that shows up to kill them. The pressure is on and if they dont make a trip to Rupp in March this season they will be the biggest dissapointment in the 15th Region in my lifetime. And again it was the Painstville fans and coaches who built these lofty expectations and the team has not been able to live up to the hype.

Gratz Lex Cath...
.

On the radio it sounded like Slone was getting stripped the whole game and getting lots of his shots blocked during the game. Paintsville isn't very deep which could cause problems in the near future. They will win in the 15th but outside of it I really think they will struggle because of the lack of depth.

I agree..when these boys were freshman people were talking about a possible state championship this year...if they dont get to the region championship then I think they'll definetly be one of the biggest disappointments in Paintsville Basketball history...I wouldn't call them a disappointment if the don't make it to the sweet sixteen because look at who they'll have to go through to get there...Valley.

Tough game for the Tigers, but they still played well in the tournament. Congrats on a good showing for the 15th region...

And, according to Mike Fields' blog, the cancellation of the third-place game between Paintsville and CovCath was a mutual decision by both coaches, due to "injuries and schedule restraints". So I assume there will be no third place trophy awarded.

He quit. I got a feelin he'll be back though. BUT, then again..I could be wrong. Tigers did play like crap last night. They just looked worn out and alittle confused. I mean heck they lost their PG who has taken care of every press they have ever faced for the last 4 years. I hope Blake finds out he is alright and can return in the near future. BUT, if he can not...I just hope every thing turns out alright for him and his family. Still in our prayers Blake. Get Well soon son.

Why would he want to come back to play? He was barely getting any gametime. Heck he should've been starting all year long. But I'm sure the coaches will try to beg him back if they feel it will help their chances to win.
