Should Pikeville College do away with football?
#1
State your reasons why or why not?
#2
No they shouldn't do away with the program. It has given quite a few kids the chance to continue their playing career as well as get a pretty good education close to home. I would personally like to see them get even more players from within a 75 mile radius. The mountains have enough talent to be competitive within the MSC.
#3
I would have to see how much money they make from football versus how much they give away in scholarships, how much they lose by paying for equipment, etc.

If they're not making a profit from it, then it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they did away with it.

That school cons enough money outta students it probably cancels out, lol. I'm with GRIZZ, they should recruit more within the mountian area. That would bring in ALOT more money, more fans, more money at consessions etc.

What's your opinion NEXT??? It was either you or ComfortEagle who voted no so far, let's hear it.
#6
I voted yes, but that is per my previous statement above.

What kind of money does Pikeville College lose in giving scholarships? They give kids free money, nothing comes out of the schools budget. What money the kids have to pay to come to school is a profit...let them keep the program as long as they want, but definately need to recruit closer to home instead of dipping in to GA and SC for all their players. They will make more money from a local crowd who cares about their locals playing than those who would have to drive a full day to get here and watch a 3 hour game!!!!
#8
Why was this question even asked? Has there been some discussion of dissolving the football program, that hasn't been made public yet?

Anyway, I voted no, I think it's been very nice to have college football right here in our region. Makes a lot more sense than having a minor league basketball team, IMO. Big Grin

Well put. I think that the program has lost a little bit of the luster from first starting out but that don't take away the fact that this is college football.

This is a crazy question. Pikeville College football has given kids a chance to graduate college. I went to Lexington the other day and saw Larry Forrester working in a bank as a loan officer and it made me so happy. Now about the local thing. Pikeville College signed 30 kids from the mountains this year and 4 are still playing ( I talked to the coach the other day). Guys, this is the way it is every year. Kids quit from around here. They get home sick and go home. I know out of the 30 that some never even made it to a practice. It isn't because of money either, the kid from Johnson Central (Johnson) quit and was getting plenty of money. The Howard kid quit from Leslie, Simpson from LCC, and plenty more and they all received a scholarship. The only ones I know that are left is Tackett from JC, Owens from KC, Cable from SV, and Begley from PCC.

This program gives Moutain Football players a chance at playing football for four more years. I think they have a great thing going in Pikeville and the Bears are gonna come around, cause this is a very athletic school in the NAIA, and there in a very tough conference with like three teams ranked in the top 25.
#12
I agree, a lot of the kids that came in this year did quit and it happens every year. I'm talking about maybe being a more of a Georgetown with the recruiting. There are plenty of players in VA, KY, OH, and TN that can make for a good football squad, plus a larger fan base....I wasn't saying that they just need kids from EKY. I know Larry "Bee", Antwan Brown, Quinton Collins, Justin Gordon, and a few of the original 9....all were great players and even better people....I think that's what kind of players we need to go after.

Well when the recruiter and coach makes all these promises to the local players and then don't even acknowledge they are even there, I would be upset to, personally I wouldn't quit but I would be unhappy. Johnson quit cause he was promised some playin time at LB, hell he never even got the first chance at LB, he was at TE from day one. He tried the TE position but never even got any reps there either. As for Ryan Howard, you don't know his situation, he left with good reason (accordin to my buddies that play for PC). I played for PC and had a good time, but I seen first hand how things are up there and that was with the old staff, this one aint no different. They think the black boys are the only athletes in the world, most local boys never even get a chance.

I'm sure that is not the truth. They will give the scholarship to the person who best deserves it.

Oh really... Just ask some of your Pikeville High School alumni who played at PC.

I don't know much about how good or bad Falkner University was supposed to be, but at the beginning of the 4th quarter, Pikeville was up 27-6. They recorded a safety in the 1st half, and Justin Lamb had 2 TD catches through 3 quarters. Lamb also became Pikeville College's all-time leading receiver with a reception in the 2nd quarter, so congratulations to him. Pikeville looked good, but I'm not sure what kind of team Faulkner was supposed to have, but I was somewhat impressed.

PC sounded impressive today. I think that program maybe on the right track.

Faulkner was not very good. This blowout win does not give any indication of how good the Bears will be this year. Will they beat Cumberlands, UVA-Wise, or Union? Those games will determine whether the team has a good year or not.

Does it really matter if they beat the top dogs in the league or even win a game? I think the most important part of any college program no matter if it is football, basketball, or even ping pong. If a kid gets to play 4 more years and gets a free college education, why would anyone want to take that away?
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.
#23
As long as there are players who want to play and get an education at the same time, I say keep the program. For many, playing ball at the next level is the only way to get an education and better their lives. Why take that away?
#24
Why should they?

no there r no reason why they should because they have had good seasons almost every year and it gives local boys a chance to play at the next level
#28
Just an update on a local player, Tyler Cable is redshirting this year and is looking to move to the offensive side of the ball next year as a Redshirt Freshmen.

I haven't voted yet so it wasn't me.

The reason it was asked was something I read in another thread.

So is that a reason to quit. Come on, Redneck, you do what is best for the team. When I played college football, I was recruited as a safety and played Full Back. I ended up loving it! My point is this, if you love the game enough and your team enough you will play any position they ask you to. I would do anything rather than quit! If someone is playing in front of you that means plain and simple they are better, not because of their color. Work harder in the off season and beat out the guy next year. I have seen plenty of boys from around here play. Jamerson, Lamb, Brad Allen, Jessie Peck, Barrett Rogers, Wolf (TN), and these were all in the last couple of years.
