Expectations for UK basketball in 07-08.
#1
The college boards have been dead for a couple days so I wanted to just jumpstart them again by bringing up the best topic of all...fan predictions and expectations for UK basketball!
How far will we go?
Who will dominate next year?
What will the starting lineup be?
Will be get Monroe or Zeller?
What does CBC need to do to make sure Rupp is jumpin?
What will we win next year? SEC Reg. season Championship? SEC Tournament Championship? Sweet Sixteen? Elite Eight? Final Four? National Championship?

Anything you think of just bring it up

i would like to win a national championship but really i think SEC tourney championship and maybe elite 8, Jody Meeks will be the man he was best player on team last year.
#3
I think I'd be able to make a more accurate assessment based on Big Blue Madness.

Last years was not very good and well...we weren't very good last year. I know you can't base an entire season off of one practice, let alone the first of the season, but you can still see who will stand out and what type of excitement is in the air.

i feel that we will make the dance at about a 4 seed and go to elite eight but next year will be our year

Close to mine. I also give more credit to the cats but anyways, I will say a 3 seed with a trip to the elite eight along with a SEC regular season and tourney championship. Yes I said it, we will beat the Vols in the regular season race. GO CATS!!!!

Rupp will be jumping because the pace will be much faster than the past 9 years have been. I see UK going around 26-8, a Sweet 16 trip is very possible, and I believe they will challenge for the SEC East..Its untelling what Billy Clyde is going to do with the line-ups, but I think 26 wins isnt out of the realm of possibility..those are lofty but realistic goals..

I really don't ever trust what I see at Midnight Madness (or Big Blue, whatever). I know it's supposed to be a practice, and they do go through some drills like passing and fast breaks, but it's still mainly for the fans. The TV crews are filming, and there's always a big production with all the bells and whistles. Plus, they usually have a dunk contest, which is definitely, you could say, "made-for-TV"! Big Grin

Guess I didn't say my prediction yet. I will say either the regular season or tourney championship, a 3-seed in the Big Dance, and an Elite Eight knockout. I would be very happy with that!

That is almost identical to mine.. HECK YEA!!! GO CATS! I hope I am wrong though! What if CBC can bring that 8th title home in his first year LOL.

Right, I'm not saying it's an exact way to determine exactly how good of skills they have, but it is a good predictor of mood for the rest of the year. Last years Midnight Madness and the one before it were very lackluster. The one three years ago was a little better, people were amazed by Rondo, there was a general excitement in the air. This was not so after the previous two Madnesses.

OK, I see what you were saying. I agree, you can gauge the mood around the program by Midnight Madness, although that may not necessarily translate into a good season. I fully expect the atmosphere at this year's Madness to be absolutely rockin', and I think it'll be one of the most jacked-up crowds to attend in many years....

Have you heard the rumor that they are going to try to have midnight madness in the middle of Commonwalth stadium? I am not even joking about this lol. I even read that it has been a rumor for years!!

I had heard that rumor as well. In one way, I think it would be pretty cool to have that many people there. But then, if it was really cold it would probably put a damper on things. The crowd would be a little more subdued, and I don't know how much the team would be able to play if it was so cold they needed to wear longjohns. Big Grin

Push the Midnight Madness date up a few weeks lol or month  I know about the cold and everything but do you really think the situation COULD happen?

You can't move the date up at all, it is set in stone by the NCAA as the first day teams can officially practice. As far back as I can remember, it has always been around the middle of October.

As for the chance of extreme cold, it would likely not happen, but it is a possibility. I know I have been to some night football games in October that have been pretty chilly, and they weren't even starting at midnight!

I guess I forgot about a NCAA date for the beginning of practices.. Retard moment**. I think they could plan it and then if it looks like it would be cool, just simply reschedule the schrimage practice until it is warm(er). They could still practice just let the fans wait a week or so to actually see them in action lol. This is almost ridiculous lol. Didn't Texas A & M do something like this last year? I swear I think so school did it just so they could beat Kentucky's record for the schrimage attendence.

Dude, you forget that in Kentucky it's basketball season all year long. LOL

Ever wonder why when the UK football team goes 8-5 (62% winning percentage) and wins a postseason game, the whole state goes nuts? But when the basketball team goes 22-12 (65%) and wins only one postseason game, the whole state is ready to jump off cliffs? It's because basketball is, and will always be, the state religion of Kentucky.

Well said.. We aren't bashing you or any man  I am just as excited as anyone about the upcoming UK football season. SEC better be prepared!!!

I can't wait until both Football and Basketball seasons start. I plan to attend a few games.

True statement. I love UK football too, and I actually have probably been to just as many of their games as the basketball Cats (tickets a lot easier to come by, LOL). I hope they do well, too, but basketball will always be king.

Do you have any other predictions about next year? Like is Meeks going to be a beast, is Crawford finally going to have a All- American season, is Patterson going to be the man for more than one year? Anything

Here's my expectation: UK fans will set their expectations too high; when those expectations aren't realized they'll start screaming to send the new coach back to the Lone Star Republic. Smile

You're right about that. Expectations will be too high in many fans minds right away and continue to be outrageous. But that will never change and any coach that takes the job at UK from now on will know that I guess. But I think Coach Gillispie is ready for the pressure.

Again, you are right about teh expectations being high. However, I think that Coach Gillispie will not let us (fans) down. Just give him some time! You can't come straight in and will a NCAA Championship (except for times the previous coach left you with a heck of a team "Pitino/ Smith").

I think it will all work out okay.

Do you think that the SEC regular season championship or tourney championship is out of the realm of expectation? I personally think that if they are capable of doing it then there is no reason to think that they won't lol(Tennesse will be the onlt threat, Flordia will need a year to regroup). As for the NCAA tourney I think that my answer will change as I see the team more and more. Right now I think I will say sweet sixteen but as the players mature and get better I thihnk that elite eight is not out of reach.

I will actually disagree with both of you. While UK fans always have high hopes for the basketball team, I think the expectations will be tempered somewhat this year. The last couple of years have been fairly disappointing, and I think most fans realize that the team Billy Clyde inherited is not one that should be expected to win an SEC championship or go to the Final Four. UK will have only 2 scholarship players above sophomore level this year, and those two remaining members of the vaunted recruiting class of 2004 (Crawford and Bradley) have underachieved so far in their UK careers.

I think the fans are so giddy about the high-level recruits that Gillespie has landed, that he will likely have one season, maybe two, as a 'honeymoon ' period. After that, well, we had better be playing on the last weekend of the season! Big Grin
