I agree, I'm not sure he was all that underrated but all the other things you said were very true. He was a good player for the raiders. If Where talking South Floyd the honor would have to go to John Meade. Played in the shadow of both Mikey Hall and Rusty Tackett. He could do it all on all sides of the floor. I believe he was a much better player than Tackett, but theres not a whole lot of players in the history of the region who had the resume that Mikey had.

When I was in school, I thought Asher Maynard from Sheldon Clark was the most underrated player. He was a great shooter and pulled us through in 2004 many times. He was key in the success we had that year.
#5
Tristen Davis of Pike Central.

The fans may have thought that some of these names were underrated however I doubt if the coaching staffs ever thought this. Many times the players that score the points are the ones that get lots of attention and it has been that way for a long time. John Meade was just about as good as anyone when he played in high school in the 15th. Adam Tackett went at evrything with 100 per cent and they both were dedicated to their team at all costs which is also underrated by so many.

Craig Ratliff of Paintsville.

Of the state champion Paintsville team, all the hoopla seems to go to JR Vanhoose. JR was undoubted a great player, but Craig was also very successful. It seems that when anything is discussed about that winning team, no-one is mentioned but JR. Craig was very instrumental in their State Championship win, and went on play PROFESSIONAL baseball with the Orioles, a feat that very very few have accomplished from eastern KY.

He doesn't seem to be given opportunities to coach in either baseball or basketball as some of the other past players have. I have seen him coach and I think he does a great job, I would love to have my kids play for him.

He very rarely gets recoginition for his accomplishments from the Paintsville people.

From that team, I would go with Matt Ratliff. he could have averaged 20+ points a game for any other school.
but really.....noone on that team should be in this thread. What made them successful, is that everyone.....players, coaches and even manager Billy Fraley, knew exactly what there "ROLE" was.

Personally I would go with Josh McKenzie from Paintsville. Big body bruiser, powerful, and had a nice touch on the ball. But like Guru said, everyone wasn't worried about personal stats and that is what made them so successful, they were just focused on winning.

Not sure I would put Craig in this category either. He signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at a D1 school - UNC Greensboro and he had offers from other schools, so I am pretty sure people noticed his game and abilities. If he was underrated no one would have seen these skills!!!

He hasn't been given a chance to coach because he is only certified to teach K-4. I don't know why he got a degree to teach at those levels...very strange for someone 6'8 to teach that age of children. It is very difficult for a man to get a job in that age group!

Gary Fields works at Phelps High School and is very active in the sports programs.... I know this has NOTHING to do with being underrated BUT... Gary is a great person who enjoys being around the kids and sports!! (especially basketball)!!!

The thread says "MOST UNAPPRECIATED" players.........when was the last time Craig was recognized for anything at Paintsville.......JR is constantly recognized. Again not taking anything away from JR, he was/is a great player. Just saying Craig had great accomplishments also, and he is rarely/never recognized.

JR, Tucker Howard, Bob Lyons, Matt Ratliff, Jimmy Daniels, Walt Crace, etc. all coaches at Paintsville now, I think all played at Paintsville, and some/all played at the college level. But none of these guys have played at the level that Craig has, and still no recognition for Craig.

When did Bob Lyons and Tucker Howard get their teaching degree??

Jimmy Daniels played for Johnson Central. I'm not sure if Craig is teaching or not, but he is coaching softball. I would like to see him get a spot on the baseball and basketball staff. During his time on the diamond he was probably one of the most feared pitchers in the area because of his size and sizzle with a fastball, was on the State All-Tournament team during the Tigers run for the state championship, and has his jersey on the Wall of Fame. I agree he definately deserves a spot on a boys Varsity team as a coach.

I am not sure, but I am not aware of Craig having the desire to have a coaching position at Paintsville. I am sure that if he wanted a position and went to the AD he would NOT be turned down, from what I see (Jimmy Daniels, JCHS grad) all he has to do is ask.

Paintsville would benefit with his presents in alot of ways.:letsparty

That's what I said, if he wants one then give him one he is very deserving. If he is happy where he's at right now then more power to him, I'm happy for him as well as every other Tiger supporter.
#23
Jimmy Daniels didn't do the asking, some else needed him out of their hair and did the behind the scenes asking....LOL!!!.

I like Terry Wright from Valley, all the talk of the akers brothers which they desevered it, I liked watching Terry play.

Paintsville is pretty much at their limit with assistant coaches. There is barely enough room for the players to sit as it is!!!! lol

I know for sure Craig showed interest last year. He was on the baseball field early in the season helping during practice. Then shortly after ....he was gone. For what reason, I don't know.

For Paintsville, I would have to go with Kyle "Gump" Adams from the 96' and 97' teams. He wasn't unappreciated, but he was underrated IMO.
