His last two teams at his previous stops (2003-04 UTEP and 05-06 Texas AM) averaged 76.4 and 77 ppg... he'll need to find a way to get his teams around 80 to win a championship.... is it possible? Defintely... will it happen... we'll find out really soon....

Not the coach I wanted or expected, I just don't think he has did anything to get praised. I'm a huge UK fan so I'm hoping he proves me wrong and is a savior for Kentucky basketball.

he's goin for ky boys
#11
Terms of the deal just announced...7 years..$2.3 million per year
#12
This is probably the worst thing for him... the student body getting their hopes up... when they turned on Tubby, they turned on him fast (atleast a simple majority)... if he doesn't get out of the gate quick, that excitement he felt today will quickly turn to anguish...

I'm willing to give him a fair shot, but people better realize they aren't getting a worldbeater....

He has 4 top 25 recruiting classes...worthy of some praise in my mind.

I like the hiring of Gillispie over Barnes or any of the other choices. He has to be a good recruiter to turn programs around as quickly as he has at UTEP and Texas A&M. He doesn't have the "coaching record" in terms of wins/losses that KY fans were looking for, but like someone pointed out earlier today - he's hungry. This guy is hungry to win and that's what I want. He said himself that he wants to be the aggressor on both ends of the floor - I like it.

We as Kentucky fans have to swallow the fact that we aren't as big as Duke, North Carolina, Kansas...and we are not the biggest dog in the SEC anymore.

This is a good hire for Kentucky in terms of where the program is right now.
#15
Suspicion of DUI charges in Gillispies' background.

He said he's not proud of that fact. He brought it up to Kentucky officials. He said he can't change things and wish he could go back and change things and he wants to overcome those mistakes.
#16
Calvin Brooks will be his assistant at Kentucky according to Dave Baker. Brooks was the head man at Houston years ago.
#17
Man I love listening to him during the press conference. He really turned me into a believer. I really think he can do some good things at UK. Plus he has two scholorships, so he can now go recruit (Hopefully Pettigrew) and maybe Jai Lucas or get DeAndre Jordan to come to UK.
#18
I don't want fans to expect this season to be the biggest turn around season ever but he will turn UK into a powerhouse very quickly. This guy can recruit very well by looking at what he did at a nothing program such as Texas A&M.

He has a great personality and a strive to win and get the best players at Kentucky.

But like somebody said, don't expect huge results right away.

And blackcat. We have 3 schollies left for next year with the departure of Morris.

Right On!

I wish him luck.

Seems like a good guy for the job. Wants to run the ball but knows that he has to play to the powers of his players. I wouldn't be surprised if his Blue-Chip recruit comes with him from A&M to UK. That would be a strong start right there.

And just as Tubby did, I think that he will represent the Big Blue and Kentucky in a GREAT manner.
#22
I think Gillispie is much better suited for UK than Barnes would have been.

The thought of Barnes was really scaring me yesterday. Did anyone see the stats I posted on him in the "Plan B" thread. Jeez.

In 5 years, fans could be saying, "we stole Gillispie he's awesome". And of course by then, we will forget he was the 3rd choice, just like Pitino was when he came.

I like the fact that Billy G. said that he knows the expectations that we, as fans, have of him and the program. He knows exactly what we want from him and have came to expect from UK basketball. He said that he liked that we expect stuff from him and performs good under the pressure, cited the fact that people expected good things from Texas A&M during the previous season. He seems to be a good recruiter and I am really looking forward to what happens next season. I wish him the best of luck. I'm pretty happy with the decision.

Comments from the current players on Gillispie.

#3 Ramel Bradley, Jr.

On Coach Gillispie’s style of play…
“It sounds good. I’m looking forward to his style, to stay aggressive, and put up some shots. Sounds like we’ll run a little more and you know I like that.”

On the last two weeks…
“It’s been crazy, a weird feeling. To lose a coach, and then get one so soon, it’s all just shocking, just need to regroup a little. We all tried to handle the situation together, and the best we could. Things happened quickly, but that’s life, and you just need to deal with change sometimes.”

On meeting Coach Gillispie for the first time and possibility of him leaving…
“He just gave me a smile, and all I can do is welcome him with an open mind, and smile back. I never thought about leaving, so it’s pretty easy to welcome a new coach. I just need to regroup, let it all soak in, and move forward the best I can.”

#43 Jared Carter, So.

On the progress of his shoulder…
“Right now I am about 95% healed, and I should be able to start practicing in about a month. I’m already in the weight room, and it really feels like nothing has happened to it.”

On his first impression of Coach Gillispie…
“We had a meeting earlier this morning, and he told us he was ready to get to work and prepare for next season. He doesn’t want to wait and feel things out. He wants to get started right away.”

#32 Joe Crawford, Jr.

On the change to a new coach…
“Change can be good. Everyone’s positive, and we’ll move forward as a team and do what we need to do.”

On the rumors of different coaches the past couple of weeks…
“It was pretty tough to hear some of the rumors. We all tried not to think about it, but it was obviously there. We have a coach to lead us now, and some directions, so I think we’re all ready to move forward.”

On Coach Gillispie’s style of play…
“I like that he talked about aggressiveness on both offense and defense. His style should work here with the guys we already have here. It will be more exciting, and I’m excited for the new start.”

#22 Ramon Harris, Fr.

On meeting Coach Gillispie the first time…
“It was good. He came in and I could tell he was very excited to be here and that is one of the things that we like to see as players. We want to see someone who wants to be here and he definitely showed us that. He showed us that he is the type of coach that is open and he is the type of coach that you can rely on.”

On coming in midseason then getting a new coach…
“To be honest I felt settled here about midway through the season. I knew that there was going to be a point of time that my name was going too be called and I wanted to be ready for that point of time. Now Coach Gillispie is here I am excited about getting the chance to work hard for him.”

#5 Derrick Jasper, Fr.

On meeting Coach Gillispie for the first time…
"I think he’s a great guy and a great coach. It was a little awkward at first, because we didn’t know what to expect. As soon as we heard him give us a speech we knew he was the right man for the job. He told us he wants to cut down some nets, and he gave us confidence.”

On Coach Gillispie’s style of play…
“I like what he said about letting his players initiate the style. I think he will play to the talent of the players.”

#21 Perry Stevenson, Fr.

On his reaction upon hearing who the coach would be…
“I didn’t know what to say because I really didn’t know what type of guy he was. He talked about what we wanted to accomplish here in terms of academics, on the court, and staying together as a family.”

On whether or not he thought about leaving Kentucky after Coach Smith resigned…
“I didn’t think about it much, because that would mean leaving the best program in the country. I’m going to stay here.”

I think the players had real good reactions to BG. And I like too see that, and so should all UK fans.
#26
"Style" of play seems to be what the players are most excited about. So are the fans, especially on the offensive end.
#27
I hope that he does well at UK....Im a proud UK fan and I will support him.....I can't wait till November
#28
Has the roundball Messiah arrived? Or shall we call him Moses, for shall he lead his people out of second round NCAA tourney bondage? Or could he be a type of David and slay the giants of the SEC, namely Florida? The analogies are endless but the point is he's won nothing at UK yet. Don't get me wrong I firmly believe he'll do well at UK, even bring a championship or two, but don't expect overnight success. Did it not take (current U of L coach that shall remain nameless) a few seasons to bring a championship team to UK. So forgive me if I fail to get all soaked in a lather about Gillispie (or Glass-pee as the Martin Countians say it), just let me know when he parts the Licking River and walks on the Ohio River!
#29
I am really diggin Gillispie. He was my second choice to Billy D, but actually now, I'm glad we got Billy G instead. I really like him so far. He's just an easy going country boy seems like. Except when it comes to basketball. I can't wait until the season starts now. It's going to be fun to see what all unfolds.
