Tubby is out at the University of Kentucky..
#1
Reports all over including WKYT that Tubby is out and going to coach the Minnesota Gophers.

This is hard for me because I honestly love Tubby but many of you got your wish.

This is shocking to me in all honesty, but I wish Tubby all the luck in the world building a program up North.

Minnesota just became my 2nd favorite team in the country.

Wow from all of the stuff that I read this is my first comment on any of the subject. I am sure there are some that will be happy to see him go but who will ever be able to live up to the big blue hype?

I don't keep up with UK basketball at all. Have not for many years but I do remember Pitino and all that he did. It would have been hard for anyone to come in behind him and keep the UK fans happy.

Wow, I just saw this and was going to start a thread. But I can't say it's too much of a shock. I didn't think it would be this soon though.
#4
From what I can tell he is going out on his own terms and I am happy for him if that's true.

That just ticks me off. You are rigth some people got their wish. Go Gophers.
#6
Also, I want to say that this 100% imo knocks us out of consideration for Patterson and Lucas.

 I know the basketball players that I have class with weren't there today so I assume he was meeting with them and saying his goodbyes. Hopefully they all stay.

Tubby haters are not going to get real deep in this thread. This is going to remain a civil discussion about a coach that some loved and some hated. If it turns into a bash fest I will close it.

WOW...I'm shocked...

Did the alumni buy-out his contract?
#11
Tubby represented this University and State with dignity and class 100% of the time. I know the last two seasons were harsh for Kentucky standards but he did a lot for us that was not appreciated.

He ran a clean program and was a well respected member of the community in doing such things as the Tubby Smith foundation which benefited unprivileged children.

Tubby was a great coach and any program is lucky to have him, and regardless of the players on the team we should all thank him for putting #7 in the rafters.

I don't think so. Most links say he resigned on his own terms.

john pelphery in the house.

Not a chance. He needs to prove himself at a larger Division 1 school before coming to a program like Kentucky. He will be a future option however.

Alfus, just wondering, who do you have class with?

I had a class with Shagari last year and he was never there, but that's a different situation, lol.

You knew he wouldn't work with assistant coaches that he couldn't choose. He wouldn't let his assistants go. You have to admire htm for that.

John Pelphrey can't land the job at South Florida.

I have a small history class with Randolph Morris and I have Econ with Harris and Carter.

None were there and they haven't missed this semester with the exception of game days.

And yes, Shagari is a different story. Smile

before i comment on ur quote i have this to say. Tubby is an outstanding man i wish him luck. he just ran out of time as UK coach because of so many reasons that we could make another thread. but now to the quote.......... IF THOSE PLAYERS DECISION WAS BASED ON TUBBY AND NOT THE FACT THAT THIS IS UK THEN WE DONT WANT OR NEED THEM.

Wkyt said Minnesota already had a plane en route to pick Tubby up and take back to Minnesota to work out the contract. Great pick up for them.

Right, but WLEX 18, WKYT, and ESPN are reporting he is leaving for certain.

Also, if it was only a rumor, it would have been shot down within minutes. And you have to keep in mind that these news sources have to check their info and backup what they say, before saying it.

That's true. I just found the headline on the HR's website interesting because they have been pro-Tubby.

Plus, remember the presidential election between Gore/Bush and how reliable the media was then?
#25
I would never report something like this unless I thought it was 110% fact. Rob Bromley is on Wkyt right now at the airport awaiting Minnesota's pick up of Smith and said his goodbyes to him. And Tubby just got on the plane and his heading out. Bromley seems pretty shaken up over it.

I too wish Tubby a great career at Minnesota. I believe he will do a great job there and build that program to where they are a year in year out pick for the NCAA tourney. I admire Tubby for sticking by his assistants and wish them luck as well. I think Minnesota will be a good stop for him, and a program that is definitely in need of a solid coach and a decent man leading them. Tubby just wasnt right for UK IMO, and that had NOTHING to do with his character. It had to do with his style and recruiting..but nonetheless, I hope he does very well at Minnesota.

Yes, well said. :notworthy

I wish tubby the best. I'm sure he will live alot longer coaching at Minnesota. The demands won't be nearly as high. I'm sad to see the 'man' tubby leave Kentucky because he was all about class. But from a coaching standpoint and program standpoint Kentucky is ready for someone new.
