If a middle school student plays baseball for a high school team. Does the student have to sit out a year of sports if the student decides to go to a different high school?

In the past- no. Of course KHSAA is always revising rules- might want to check it out with them. Go to the KHSAA website, you may find your answer there.

There is actually a new rule on that. Now no matter what if a kid transfers, even in middle school, he or she must sit out a year. If will go into effect during the 07-8 school year.

i think there is an exception to that rule if the student changes his or her mailing address then the child does not have to seat out, or if the child has never played a varsity game. i think those are the exceptions not for sure

In the 08-09 season, if a kid plays middle school sports (ex. baseball) then they cant play for a high school that same year. They will have to pick middle or high school.

KHSAA has been considering a "penalty" for kids who play HS sports as middle schoolers and then transfer to another HS with out actually moving. There was an article last spring in the Lexington Herald- a sports writer had interviewed an 8th grader who was starting on the varsity softball team and was apparently very successful. She was asked how she thought the team would do next year- considering they would be returning quite a few players. Her reply: I don't know, I wont be here next year. I'll be going to school at ?!?!?
The rest of the article discussed the KHSAA looking into penalizing student athletes for this. It may not be in effect at this time, but I look for it to be soon.
