PHELPS, Ky. - Phelps Hornets standout Russell Johnson signed to play football at Pikeville College Monday.
Johnson was limited to nine games last year due to an injury, but still rushed for 1,003 yards on 161 carries, averaging 6.2 yards a carry.
Johnson hauled in 13 receptions for 283 yards, and scored a total of 15 touchdowns. Johnson also recorded 80 tackles, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.
Johnson is excited about the opportunity that awaits him at Pikeville College.
âI know I have to go there and work hard,â said Johnson. âBut I'm excited about what awaits me at Pikeville.â
âIt has always been a dream of mine to play college ball,â added Johnson.
According to Phelps coach Chris Hagerman, Johnson is the best all-around football player he has coached in nine years.
âI'm excited about him going to Pikeville,â said Hagerman. âI know that he will go there and work hard and get out on the field some how.â
âHe is undersized and not that big,â added Hagerman, âBut he gives it his all, and when you do that good things will happen.â
