Hazard High School's biggest fan, Dr. Vernon Cooper, affectionately known as "Mr. Bulldog", has passed away at the age of 83. Dr. Cooper has been a long time supporter of sports in Hazard. He has made many contributions over the years to the community that he loved. He will be greatly missed.

He was on the bench when we played Clay County in the WYMT a couple of years ago. He sat with our coaches and was very interesting to talk with. I don't know if he was on the bench of many other teams but we welcomed him in being with us that night. This is not only a big loss for Hazard but another loss for all of us in the sporting world here in the mountains. Mr. Cooper was a person that was interested in all kids. Prayers to the family from South Floyd.

just seen the check he wrote to pay for a kid to go to football camp was the one Claude Basset deposited in his account. This was the beginning of the end for Basset and Mumme

Vernon will be missed especially in Hazard but also all over the mountains. Although, Vernon was a Bulldog at heart, he was an overall mountain sports fan. If you've followed high school sports in the mountains, you've crossed paths with Mr. Cooper somewhere along the way. I'm sure up there on them Golden Streets, he's found the Big Dipper and they're talking mountain basketball as we speak. May his soul rest in peace, as he sorely be missed here in the mountains. My thoughts and prayers go out to Cooper's family as well as the Hazard community at this time of loss.

As an old adage goes------Noone stands as tall as when they stoop to help a child. There are countless children that Mr.Cooper has helped. I have no doubt that the big man above is saying"Well done, my good and faithful servant". My prayers are with the family in their( and the entire community's) time of sorrow.

In this day and time you really don't hear of many people like this. It must have been a treat to have known this man. Sounds like his family and Hazard has lost one of the best.
