I had 4 or 5 phone calls yesterday saying coach Mike Whitaker made a visit to Powell county yesterday and has shown interest in the coaching vacancy.
This is what I was told yesterday and I was just wondering if anyone can officially confirm this. Coach Whitaker was supposedly shown the facilities, community and met with the team yesterday. Can anyone confirm any truth to this? We all know coach Whitaker taught Mike Holcomb the offense he uses at Breathitt and coached a guy named Tim Couch. As unbelievable as this sounds just wondering if anyone can verify this info. ???????????????????

NO EARTHLY WAY, Mike Whitaker will take the job at Powell county, NO WAY.

Let's put it like this, Gordon Carter the state championship winning coach from Mingo county was promised the world and got ZILCH!!!!!! So his stay at Powell was a short one(2 days he was there to be exact). Coach Jones was as good as anyone they could hire and he got nothing. The best coach Powell could get or could hire has resigned and that's the bottom line.

Getum-Choppin, I do not mean any disrespect, but what is your problem with Powell? There has been enough negativity with this program since its beginning. Why not offer encouragement, solutions? Who do you think would be a good candidate? Do you know definitely that Whitaker is not interested? Long way to drive, much less, to think he would actually take the time to meet with players and others if he was not interested in one of the most challenging coaching jobs available. My best to whomever takes it on and THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS:
No matter who they hire, If they won't hire the guy any knowledgable, expirienced, ***. football coaches, He's screwed. If they stick the guy with Scholnick, Wormser, Poindexter and Booger just because these guys are teachers in the building it will be the same results. YOU HAVE TO GET THE HEAD COACH Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y HELP.
You could have took a hat, Went up to the local pool room and got names of all the guys there, Had a blind draw and got as good as staff as Bruce Jones had with the exception of the K.C. who did a good job and knew football.
You cannot pick a head coaches staff for him. You cannot give him guys who don't know football. SO WHOEVER THE NEW COACH IS, GIVE HIM THE SAME STAFF BRUCE HAD AND HE'LL GO 1-9.

If anyone has a solution for Powell's problem then feel free to post it here. If all anyone can post is negativity then move on to another thread. Final warning. If it does not stop then the thread will be closed.

The guy is one of the reasons Tim Couch is a Millionaire. I think he will do good wherever he chooses to coach.

Gettum-Choppin, I don't know what your relationship is/was with Powell, but drop it. Your remarks reveal your displeasure and negativity towards the program and from your prior posts everyone is well aware of your opinions. The kids need positive minded people working with them towards a more productive atmosphere conducive towards producing a football program that fields a team that is competitive each year.

Thanks. Our world has enough going on as it is. Our young men need motivated people not cynical history bashers. Football not only builds character, it reveals it. Bigbill2, Coach B, you have it. Unfortunately, some that post and bash when others are down, don't have enough to put in a used bag from Wal-Mart that most of us use as extra trash bags. Trash is exactly what has been posted and it's time to take it out. My best to all you busting your *** for the game of football. Remember, it's not what you do, but why and how. Why-because you love it. How-with every damn thing you've got. I'm finished here. KW, SP.

Mike Whitaker would be just the guy for the job.....most high school coaches these days are wanting to take a school that is down and build them up

Well there's no other coach but Coach Riggs, Allen, and Lopez. I don't think coach Rose is going to be there. Every one of the varsity coaches resigned. So it is open.

it doesn't matter who comes and goes at powell co. the administration will find something wrong with every coach they get. there is a slogan everybody in powell county goes by...."i can do it better than anyone else" and they live by that. thats why you never here about the actual kids playing ball its all about the adults who have nothing better to do than run their mouths about things they have no clue on. until they get people in there who are generally interested in the kids than they will never have a program. I think bruce cared about them, but he didn't conform to the political b.s. that goes on there. i admire bruce jones for getting out when he did.

02-06-2007, 02:11 PM
