If anyone presses them there point guard (Paintsville) will try and dribble thru 2 and sometimes 3 w/ 2 of his team mates on the wings and he still try's to dribble thru them and once again the "legendary" coach just sits there. Hey just a thought here maybe you should sit at home and let someone coach these kids and take them to the state tourney, or maybe the "legendary " coach knows this and thats why he doesnt want to sit at home at this time. As for the remarks about the big man for Pikeville...I wasn't saying he does throw elbows intentionally, but doing what he is supposed to. When there are people around the basket trying to go for the ball...you are told to "Chin it" and not give the defenders an oppertunity to knock it out. Never did I say he was playing dirty. As for Paintsville and shoving and pushing underneath...I don't know what that is all about, maybe they were trying to get in his head or something...but I agree, more fouls should have been called about that.

Strong opinion, and very divisive. I disagree 100%. Where do I begin...?
First, let me say that JD is a good player, and he has every reason to be in the paint -- he is the strongest kid on the court -- but that is not to say he shouldn't be on the perimeter too. JD brings that to the table, he has the ability to do both, and do both well, if he wants to.
Second, Van Ferguson absolutely should not be in the paint. Van is athletic, quick, good jumper, but definitely a finess player -- he needs to take his opportunities for offensive rebounds, and weak side shot blocking, but that is the only reason he should ever be in the paint.
Third, Blake, the point guard does tend to try to dribble thru double teams occassionally, but Blake has come a long way as far as basketball IQ. When Paintsville has averaged less than 10 turnovers the past about six games, I'd say that they are doing a pretty good job protecting the ball -- Blake does make some silly mistakes, but last I checked, every HS basketball player does.
Last, turning to the cynical remarks about Coach Runyon. While I am not sure who you are Bluegrass Rules, I can't speak for you, and don't plan to, but I played for Coach Runyon; I watched Coach Runyon's practices when I was young; I have been to watch practice presently; I know Coach Runyon quite well -- his son is my best friend, his daughter is my sister's best friend, he and my father are best friends -- I can tell you, Coach Runyon spends every hour of every day finding ways to win.
He has tried more gimmicks this year in his practices, his coaching style, and his attitude towards players then he has ever done in his coaching career. Coaching occurs in the 2+ hours each day when they have practice. Coach Runyon has never prided himself on being one of these fiery, rally cap type coaches on the sideline who claps every time a player makes a free throw -- if that is the type of coach you are expecting to see, then you'll have to watch another team.
Coaches players will run thru a brick wall for him, he knows how to coach. It isn't his fans that call him legendary, it's the mass of coaches who have respect for him state wide; it's the number of NBA players he has coached against; it's the respect he brought to the mountains with numerous trips to RUPP; it's the Coach of the Year plaques; it's the doctors, lawyers, politicians, teachers, police officers, CEO's, entrepenuers, and successful basketball coaches across this nation that he inspired to be great; it's his loyalty to one school, when he has been offered numerous coaching jobs across this nation; it's the players he has put on college basketball rosters across the nation -- not only Paintsville players, but has helped other HS basketball players as well; it's all of these things that has made him a legend.
If you don't like it, I am cool with it, but no need to put him down because he has made a difference in more lives than most anyone you or I know.
Sorry for the length. Have a great day.

How many games have you watched? I should say how many games have you been to because you apparently haven't watched any. J.D. is by far the best post player on the team. So what he had a bad game the other night but doesn't everyone? Ferguson is one of the best outside shooters in the region so why would you put him underneath? As for the point guard he had a few TO's the other night but you ever seen a point guard that didn't? Other than that the kid had a nice game. The "legendary" coach must be doing something right. Coaching is done in practice and his kids are always prepared no matter what the situation is. You have to have respect for a man who cares more about his hometown than to take the money and go elsewhere when he's had many opportunities. Go back to EagleField and take and English class. JMO.

I will pick Paintsville in this one. Too much talent and Coach Runyon has walked this walk before. Even though I am a JC fan, I would like to wish our cross town friends good luck. I think Paintsville has a great shot of taking the All A this year.

Now that is an olive branch if I have seen one. Thanks JC Cheer Fan for rising above the fray. I appreciate it. People don't realize the importance of our rivalry, and what it has done to make the two schools better. Frankly they are the two best schools in EKY as well as two of the best schools in KY. Good luck with your endeavors.

What do you mean by the two best schools. Athletics? Academics?
01-25-2007, 02:50 PM
Arguably both, but you are correct, I was speaking in general terms essentially just to to JC Cheer Fan -- but certainly academically, statistics do show that.

He may very well know a lot when he is in the right state of mind. Last season he thought Bill Mike was a good coach, he even nominated him for Coach of the week.
BLUEGRASS-RULES Wrote:Bill Mike Runyon has the Tigers playing really well
Then on the other hand this is the same person that started the up-roar about Johnny Martin and the Rebels of Allen Central, trying to get him fired.
BLUEGRASS-RULES Wrote:Well from a former player and alumini from A.C.H.S. I think Johnny needs to hang it up. Whether it be retiring or fired. He is the reason i did not play my full 4 yrs. and i am sure i am speaking for alot of other former players also. When i was there there were people that were walking the hallways (and we will never know the answer) that could have been playing and ACHS could have went to the state a few times. Johnny is bad for ACHS and has been for along time.
Looks like he was way off on that one this season. Allen Central was rebuilding their program over the last two seasons, the reason they weren't winning was not the coach, it was probably because they had a team full of Bluegrass-Rules. They are off to their best start in several years and could very well win the region. I guess his animosity towards Bill Mike Runyon is because his Rebels hasn't defeated a team from Johnson Co. in the past 20 years.

Not saying nothing negative about JD he ia a real good palyer, and the Allen Central coach does need to be replaced, fired or whatever they want to call it. I just think that van would be more of a threat cutting the middle and exposing his multy talents in and near the paint. Your right i have never been in or even heard about a practice of the "legend" and like i said its JMO, i do not like his style of coaching, Its like the team they play in the hoops classic from tenn. He sat on the bench and never said one word to anyone let alone coach any on the bench until they got a compfortable lead then he stood up and "i think it was a thumbs down sign he gave" legendary move there, absolutely ran chills over me. I never seen "the legend " coach when he had all those kids that to be truthfully honest with you coach martin at Allen Central could have taken to the state tourney. The reason i came back with this post is to say once again i was not bashing JD or Van there both really good players and i really like watching both of them play. As for the point guard yeah i gueaa i will agree with you he is a high school player and they do make silly mistakes but some alot more than others. Once again JMO. thank u and have a nice day. i sure do hope the kids from Paintsville can pull it out tomorrow night. Would love to see them and AC in the finals. He may very well do it, but to criticize a coach who has been around the game for so long and to have won many district, regional, state tournament games, and the entire state tournament....using that coaching style, sounds like it has worked to me.
Still pick the Tigers by 15.

We are good, I was just making my point as well. I would like to know what you, personally, would like to see from a "legendary" coach on the sidelines...I truly am interested, just to gauge what you think about sideline coaching.

Besides thumbs up or down and #5. If thats what he is practicing on in his practice time thne geez. All i seen along w/ alot of others that i have talked w/ was 4 players standing around the 3 point line and one around the free throw lane. Now i know there is more to it than that. No screens whatso ever, no cutting to the open spot, and on alot of possesions the one who brings the ball up the floor shoots it or maybe 1 no more than 2 passes then a shot. Once again i know there is more to the game than that. I have never played for " the legend " and never seen a practice. i have an interest in Paintsville Basketball for the rest of this yr and next and will never have anymore interest in it, but all i have ever heard was what such a great coach the "so called legend " is. He doesnt owe me one thing and he does not have to prove anything to me, but i am impressed in no way with his coaching ability. It just seems to me that he is not interested in coaching. If thats his style then so be it. IMO thats not fair to the kids that play for him. I have seen coaches that are fiery and coaches not so fiery but it does a kid good to get patted on the behind or a touch to the back of the head for a job well done. or even the oppisite . the same holds for a kid that doesnt do so good, and sometimes they need a real good butt chewing, "The legend" never does any of this. ok enough said i hope i do not make anyone angry this once again is JMO. thank you and have a nice day.

Haha, I don't get angry, I am in politics -- no one agrees in politics.
Nonetheless, I agree with what you would like to see from a fans point of view. Rick Pitino is probably the best at sideline antics, and frankly, I love watching him coach the game.
The Tigers may have a unique and perhaps outdated, depending on your views, way of coaching. Coach Runyon does the most "butt-chewing" and one of the many other coaches do the "build him back up" process.
As for calling set plays...I'll have to disagree with you. Especially with this team. The last thing I would want to do as a coach is tie Lando down to having to go from "point A to point B". When you have such talent, I would hope a coach would let them use it.
I do agree that occassionally they get lazy -- don't cut, set screens, etc. -- but you are right again, there is certainly more to the offense then what you are seeing.
You have a great day. We hope you have an interest in Tiger basketball for years to come.

I will hope we can agree to disagree on this point because I prefer not to have to write a dissertation on why most of what you say is ridiculous.
