I myself am an avid fan of mountain basketball, and enjoy attending games in and around the 14th region. Most recently, i have attended the opening rounds of the WYMT Classic and have witnessed great play from all of the teams involved. All of the boys have given their all in efforts to win pride for their respective schools and it has been a privelage to watch. However, the conduct and actions of certain fans has been disgracful to all of eastern Kentucky. The Hazard High School cheering section can be repeatedly seen cursing and harrassing the players, cheerleaders, and parents of opposing schools and this must be stopped. Obscene gestures and language is chanted for all to hear and I along with many others have had enough. I would like to hear the opinions of others on this.

yeah i thought it was pretty disrespectful the other night when shelby valley was shouting "Shelby valley" and hazard after every line would say "sucks."
01-11-2007, 01:38 AM
Unfortunatly that seems to be going on at 90% of the games.
01-11-2007, 01:42 AM
Not dirty or anything..but i just thought it was kind of funny when i heard Valley chant "Nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts, we got screwed"

The hazard high school pep section has always been known as the meanest and toughest pep section in the 14th region...and actually I was in that pep section and noone really heard what the group of shelby valley students were saying in the section next to us...most im not allowed to say on here...all kinds of stuff that deserved the kind of treatment they got when we were prompted by their yelling to start the pep secton in the middle of the third quarter. I didnt agree with some of the stuff we were yelling I thought it was classless---but I also didnt agree with what they were yelling and it was a lot worse!!!!So before people get on here and think they can just talk about how bad hazard is they first need to get their facts straight about what actually happens between the fans first. Also people need to realize that it is not just one school with a bad pep section....there many that are AS BAD or worse SOMETIMES....generally hazard fans are pretty rough BUT only get mean when provoked by a HORRIBLE shelby valley cheer section yelling out personal insults to people in our fan section and to OUR CHEERLEADERS!!! PLEASE GET THE FACTS RIGHT!!!!!!!
01-11-2007, 02:14 AM
I think it is just a little odd that Hazard Fans through the years, have always been this way, in every game, i think this shows the character of their families and the people that supports them, this is not just a one time occurance, and I am sick of seeing and hearing it. Hazard fans need to grow up, along with other schools fans who prompt it.

As long as nobody is disrespectful I am all for it..As long as it isn't toward one player..Makes the games more fun and get's the fans more into it..Is it wrong? For sure...Does it make it 10 times more fun..DEFINATELY!!

Supporting your team in a respectful way can be fun too.

Agree with you that using profanity is USELESS and disrespectful and meant to include that in my post and didn't! It is great for teams to have a great student section, but people have to remember that we aren't in the Hoosier era of sports conduct anymore...

There is no "era" for bad behavior.

This thread is a good point. I will tell you one school that has VERY GOOD FANS who act in a very good manner is Jackson City! Last year there school spirit was awesome. Not sure about this year because I haven't seen them play.

PoppaBear, Dont know where your from but I am from Hazard and dont like you talking about the character of these kids families. I and many of my friends have children who attend or have attended Hazard and they never act or acted as you say!!!!! Their pep section is a little out of control but believe it or not I have seen pep sections in eastern kentucky that are worse. It embarrassed me the other night when they screamed "Suck" but our cross town rival was screaming much worse when we played them!!Dont guess you were there? They were screaming obscene chants!!! Parents need to attend these games just to see how their kids act in public. Not just HAZARD but all schools. Everyone needs to remember WWJD!!!!

Two wrongs do not make a right. Both schools have Principals, who should be present @ all functions or send an Asst. Principal. These folks are the very people who should be policing this type of thing. I will say this... over the years I have attended a few games and this year @ Hazard, I saw some things out of a male Hazard cheerleader that I know for a fact his Coach would have "died" over. (Hazard's cheer coach is one of the nicest ladies I know of) He was in uniform and unprovoked and some of his comments to our cheerleaders during haltime were malicious to say the least... now this kid was "stunning" in some ways, but his comments @ halftime were just tacky & didn't even have a rhyme or reason. I know people, who know Hazard's Principal, and they say he's a "stand-up" guy. Well, if he is, as people say he is... then he shouldn't mind putting Hazard's finest in their place. (or out of their place) Bad behavior @ ballgames is a sign of poor parenting and poor guidance from one's school officials. It should take only but a few times of sending some home to listen on the radio.... away from the action, for them to see that they have to behave themselves to be a part of the pep section. Over the past few years @ the Class "A" State Tournaments I have noticed some appalling behavior by students... Eastern Kentucky had its share of redneck behavior, but Lexington Christian was horrible a couple of years ago.... so it's not just a Regional thing parenting or the lack thereof requires a strong hand from school administrators... is this news?

I tried to amend my post... but the pc was running too slowly... I would like to add that the male Hazard cheer leader has great talent and shows tremendous potential... but his off-the-wall halftime behavior soured it for this fan. If cheer leaders are leading the cheers and showing examples of good behavior, then perhaps some of these problems could be alleviated.

Fans and everyone involved should take note of how Lawrence County ends their basketball games with a prayer at mid-court. Excellent.

Alot of the responsibility should go towards the Principals...At Pike Central Mr. Eddie McCoy did not allow profanity in the pep section if he heard or saw the first obsene gesture the Pep Section would have been shut down for the game...Although i do know this year the student section was very disrespectful and harsh toawrads MC...The Principals need to take action and make an example to many people around...Pep Sections are there to cheer on their team and to pick the games spirit up...While this year i know many schools have gotten way out of hand i have also been told many principals are provoking the ridiculous additudes from the students...I do not think we can completly eliviate the problem but PRINCIPAL PLEASE SETTLE YOUR STUDENTS DOWN...

You bring up a great point, I would like to see all of our teams honor Riverside's coach in some way shape or form, it is a tragic loss for their program and I know that they would do the same for ANY other team in the region.

I think it is a joke to act that way in any public forum. I remember hearing Hazard fans during football season yelling sick sexual comments to 2 14 year old girls at the game. Had I not been in more control of my emotions, those fans would have been in serious trouble.
01-11-2007, 05:47 PM
So this would be what I had heard about Hazard Cheerleaders, themselves and several of their buddies in t he stands, yelling @ the Pikeville Watergirls... in football... it wasn't the playoff game.... Hazard fans also fired a firework right from the turf on the field after the game and after they had been asked nicely to refrain from doing so by the PA person... an expensive handpainted sign was torn down.. by their fans... and it had been bolted and screwed into a fence.... I bet there's a KRS # somewhere that would have covered this behavior, but maybe the Pikeville folks were just so glad to be rid of them, they let it go... it was still uncalled for and their Principal should have been informed. I posted earlier about the Hazard cheer coach... evidently that nice lady is no longer in charge... what a shame.... it usually takes 4-6 years for a program to degenerate to this point... evidently this new person is a real pro!
