The Johnson Central Golden Eagles have lost 8 in a row and alot of people are disappointed including myself. They are 4-9 and was expected to be on top of the region again. Alot of people say that Coach Starns is running the boys off, since he didnt let Jesse Meek come back they havent been able to win for the exeption of SC and East Carter. Meek was the most exiting player to watch on the Squad and layed in all out on the floor, so on the behalf of Johnson Countians, STUPID MOVE STARNS. There are a number of kids no-longer playing
Justin Blanton, Tommy Taylor, Zac Sargent, Coty Conley and the list goes on.
Please Starns get Meeks back and continue the winning ways,

Why did Meeks get ousted anyways?

I'd much rather have Blanton than Meek. He played hard every tenth of a second he was in and doesn't have the ego. Reminds me of Burrhead over at Paintsville back in the late 70's. Made a big play, showed some emotion, but never gloated. Done what what was asked from him and showed great sportsmanship at all times.

Tommy Taylor never was on the basketball team this year he didnt want to play cause starns aggravated him to death about it Zac was tired of 7 days a week practice jesse quit once and starns let him come back then quit again and starns didnt let him come back coty also didnt want to play and justin is gonna focus on baseball

They just beat the number 4 team in the region. Maybe they can get back on track now. This was a big win for them.

A member of the coaching staff told me that Meek had gotten his 2nd technical of the year and the team rule was to set out 1 game, when they got back from the Brown game Starns spoke with Meek and told him to take a week suspinsion or quit. So Meek thought it was unfair and told Starns that he just couldnt do it and turned his stuff in. Nothing negative was said among the twofrom what i know and Meek apologized the next morning, and Starns said it wold be thought about for 1 week and and after 1 week Starns told Meek that he needed more things in life than basketball. Meek begged but Starns didnt budge.
Every other coach on the staff said they wanted him back on the team.
Thats what i was told by 2 different people.

Meek was a headcase. He was getting into verbal arguments in practices on a daily basis and IMO Starns made the right move. Yes Jesse was a an outstanding on the ball defender and heck of a player but the coach of the JCHS Boys basketball team is Mark Starns and no matter what anyone else says his opinion is the only one that matters and what he says goes!

First of all lets put the blame where it belongs. The players! When they learn that basketball is a team sport then they will again start to win. Coach Starns does an outstanding job with this team. I admire a coach who has rules and sticks to them. As for Jesse, I enjoyed watching him play but he has the same problem that some of the others have. Ego! I for one heard that he did allow Jesse to come back but had to serve a suspension for the technicals that he had received but did not want that. These players need to realize that one person can't win a game no matter how good they think they are or how good their parents think they are. Ego is the main problem on this team and that stems from the parents. I could care less if I scored a point as long as my team won. Most parents now think my son scored this many points, my son should have had the ball, or they won't throw my kid the ball no matter if the team is winning or not.:dontthink Prime example tonight, When they passed and played together then they had the lead or came back. Once they started one on one then they would lose there lead and fall behind. I for one was disappointed that Justin Blanton did not play this year. I enjoyed watching him play. Played hard all the time just like Jaryd Crum, Joe Whitaker, and James Blankenship on this team. There is still time to get back on track but it will take a team effort. Once these kids figure this out they will start to gel. Until then they will struggle listening to the parents :argue: instead of Coach Starns.

Great post. This team has some major EGO problems and sometimes plays with no heart.

I agree with coach Starns totally, I would'nt have let him come back either no one should be aloud to come and go as they please. I don't care who you are you shouldnt and for the other kids not playing because of Jesse's foolish action so be it why would you even play if all your wanting to do is win, now I love to win more than I hate losing but you should still go out there and have fun you cant just count on one player to do it all and GREAT MOVE STARNS, you what most coaches wouldnt have done you did the right thing.

Starn's is dealing with the same issues that all coaches deal with. Parents can be a distraction and are in alot of programs. When you lose you will get second guessed and parental influence can take a front seat. Deal with it!!

Why doesn Matney not seem to have this problem? It always seems to be with the basketball team. Just an observation.

If you talk to Matney he will tell you he has problems just like this. The difference is he is allowed to start 22 players while Starns is allowed to only start 5. Most kids and parents think they are great and should play every minute. In a large school like JC this isn't going to happen.
01-10-2007, 01:42 AM
I guess you have a good point. It is easier to hide parent conflicts with 22 versus 5. At least both the football and basketball coaches seem to have the same take control approach though. Once the parents learn this, it should only get better. Hopefully!

You can't dwell on the past and expect to win when playing a team sport!! True Jesse did give the Eagles some size and talent, but how much can one do before you reach your limit and say no more.Jesse plays the game with alot of passion and is very emotional, but sometimes these traits can end up hindering more than helping. You can post he should be put back on the team, but the fact is it's not gonna happen!!The Eagles will just have to play with what they have got and what they have is a very solid group of young men that want to win and will give it their all in order to achieve it.The guys are playing with alot of heart and IMO you all will see this when Districts roll around!!! GO EAGLES!!!!!!! :letsparty

That may sound like a good idea but in reality, JC has about 70 football players meaning 48 are sitting on the sidelines not playing. JC basketball has about 13 or 14, not exactly sure, and they have 8 or 9 sitting on the bench. Basketball allows substitutions as does football, so I see it being very similar because the majority of the players that don't play are underclassmen. I believe the football team doesn't have these kind of problems all the time because Matney is a lot more respected than Starns.

Seems as if Matney and Starn's have two separate fan bases. Sad for Johnson County!!

they was supposed to be a competeter(sp) in the regionals

In the defense of Zac Sargent quitting the team, I can assure you that it wasn't because he was tired of 7 day practices. He was one of the most devoted athletes to his team and coaches and he gave 110% everyday. Practice was not the issue. He was tired of giving 110% and only receiving 1% from the coach. IMO he didn't have the right last name.
01-10-2007, 12:07 PM
I think that JC has alot of heart. They are a good team, but they have to believe in each other. Jamie is a very good ballplayer, when he is letting the game come to him, but when he forces it, it is more of a struggle. Jamie scores alot when he relaxes and just plays, when everyone is involved in the game. Joe W. gives it all everytime on the floor, play hard and HUSTLES. Mr. Welch is very good HUSTLER as well, also can play inside with attitude. Jared Crum is a emotional leader at the point, keeps everybody in the game. The problem is they need to believe in their hearts that they have something special ahead of them. Quit worrying about who has quit or no longer on the team. I agree that Zac didn't get much time, he has the right name if he was a P-ville, his uncle was a very good ballplayer back in the 70's. Justin Blanton, I strongly agree he has a great attitude and the ability to play and make a difference, but I know he is focused on Baseball, which he is very good at at well. Jesse Meek, yeah he plays with compassion and STRONG ATTITUDE, but that is his style. Like it or not, he is a good player. As far as should he be on the team or not, that is up to the Coach. The Coach has the most difficult job of all, trying to execute that fits his team the best. He has for the most part do a good job. Because coming to eastern KY, with an outsider approach is not always easy. I have always said that I believe that JC or P-ville will repersent the 15th region at the state tournament.

With the help of fellow BGR buddies I've done some investigating with this situation at JC. Thanks guys for helping me with your information. Sounds like the supporters of Coach starn's are applauding him for not bending his rules with the Meek situation. My question is what's his policy on non-football players (Joe Whitaker) not participating in any summer workouts?? I was told Whitaker didn't practice with this team until after the first scrimmage in November. This kid didn't practice til November!! Then he asked to come out and play....How convenient for him... Most coaches would laugh at a kid that wanted to come out for the team after the first scrimmage. If I'm Meek ,Sargeant or any other kid I'm pissed Whitaker was allowed on this team..No wonder they are 4-9.

I don't think joe actually "quit" this team. He decided not to play to focus on golf which he is really good at. He was asked to come back and play since the numbers were low. He was not the only one who was approached to play this year. I don't think joe has been the problem on this team. He plays hard every game whether he scores or not. Deal with it!!!

Deal with what...I'm just putting facts out there. Nothing against Whitaker or any other player. Just facts about the situation.
