Last year's game was a tale of two halves. Russell dominated the 1st half, and Belfry dominated the 2nd half. In the end, Russell did enough damage in the 1st half to preserve the win.
The thing that goes unmentioned by most Belfry fans is that the score could have been a lot worse at halftime if not for a miraculous play by Matt Maynard and one coaching blunder by Ivan McGlone. I think everyone there remembers Matt's play that saved a TD, so I'll not elaborate on that. But at the end of the half Russell was on the Belfry two yard line with plenty of time to line up and call two running plays that I'm fairly confident would have gotten them a TD. Instead, Coach McGlone showed he is human and capable of making a mistake by calling a pass play that resulted in a big sack keeping Russell out of the endzone.
Those two plays kept Russell from going into halftime with a 34-0 lead, and instead kept the game in reach. In my opinion, that kind of lead would have demoralized the Pirates and we wouldn't have seen the same 2nd half that we did in 2005. So if you want to talk about what could have been, this has to be mentioned.
Bottom line...the better team won that night.

Would like to see Belfry and Johnson Central go to State. If both teams play like country boys, then both will win. I'm proud to be from Eastern Ky.:1:

And for the poster who mentioned how it could have been much worse at half is dead on! It goes to show how when teams are pretty even the difference a couple plays make. Belfry could very well have gotten beat 42-0... they also very well could have won 21-20!
If both teams played to their true potential that game I still think Russell wins..they were the better team and had the better gameplan.
I think it's ironic that what may have lost the game for Belfry was the mistakes made by Belfry kick return team (those two early turnovers) and this year it may be our kick coverage team that will kill us!

You are right. There have been alot of big plays between these two schools the last couple of years. Both were very entertaining games. Lets hope the this years game is just as entertaining as the last two. No matter who wins.

Both years turnovers led to big plays by both teams. My guess is the game will follow suit this year, too. I just hope Belfry is on the positive side of the TO battle.

I definately think the game will come down to TO and line of scrimmage. How deep is belfry on the Oline? Do they rotate players or play the same guys? Should be an awesome game.

They stay with the same core, tho they sub in a few every now in then to mix things up.. I'd say Totten will be in a lil more this week to beef things up..

I actually somewhat agree with your statement that #74 had trouble getting to the QB. Actually, most of the time he was being double teams, on a few occations you even had a RB help out. Kinda, hard to put much pressure on from that player. I think Corbin did a great job of holding their back in the backfield to help the oline anytime a Russell player would break through the line. I do agree that an offseason workout program designed to enhance his quickness and endurance will be helpful. Let's just hope that the season doesn't start for a least two more weeks.

IMO! You can put all the weight you want on the "D" or "O" line, If they aren't quick to make a decision on what to do,,They are worthless!!! And i can tell you this-Russell had better start gettin those linemen in some kinda "class" to do that,,,or they will Fail!! And another thing, Belfry is a TEAM, We work together as "ONE" any kind of prob's we see, WE! take care of it,Not just one player. And on another note, A lil inside info,,,,We are gonna RUN the ball Right up the MIDDLE!!!!! All NIGHT LONG!!!!!
With a Big Surprise,,,Did I say Big, Yup a Big Surprise!!!!!

Yup, Totten will play some.

The depth on the "O" line runs deep--As well for the "D" line.

I find you to be just a bit cocky. You better be able to back that up come Friday because the Devil's are not going to lay down they want to return to the Papa John's.

Oh i know this will be a hard fought game,,Know doubt,,Russell was a very lucky ball club last year,i admit that Belfry didnt play in the first half,,,In the second half was a different story. Everyone knows that if Belfry played 4 quarters of football it was theirs!!! but they didnt.....

The thing is that Belfry did NOT play 4 quarters last year and Russell won the game. Things all fell into place but very lucky is a bit harsh.

I guess Russell went as far as they did on a wing and a prayer.

We can disect this matchup till we all turn blue. Whoever makes the least mistakes and keeps the momentum will win this game

At this time of the season luck has nothing to do with it.

Russell in a close one

Why Are People Hatin On Russell So Much??

Russell is by far the best team that we have faced all year! We will have to play our best game to beat them most all belfry fans know this. Hope to see a hard fought game & Belfry pull it out in the end. If Russell wins I'll be rooting for them to win it all .Good luck to both! Go Pirates

I agree with this statement, but this just might be the best team that Russell has faced.

Thank God that Russell didn't play 4 quarters! The score would have been 65-0! I am not so sure that Russell won on luck last year!
