Powell winning 14th region
#31
yea but its nice to think that

The talk of even considering Powell County to win the 14th Region this coming season is a "JOKE":howdy:

No matter who takes regions this year it isn't going to be easy for anyone. There are a few great teams in the region who all have shot such as PCC, JBS, Lee, Estill, and Powell. In the end it'll come down to who comes ready to play that night. JMO

Powell will have just as good of chances as JBS or PCC...and if u can't see that then you're the joke.

Powell is not even a top 10 regional team!!!!!! How can they compete for a regional? They may not be a top 3 team in their district. Ask anyoe that is not from Powell and they will say the same thing. That is not a joke, that is a fact!

LOOKAYANNER Wrote:A lot of you fellows are making too big of a deal out of the fact that Powell County is returning 11 or 12 seniors. However, this same group of players were 8-17 last year and lost to Estill County in the first round of the district tournament by 67-45. Well, June Buchanan is also returning most of their team and finished the season last year with a 23-6 record...which included a WIN over Estill in the regional quarterfinals. By losing by 3 pts in 2 OT to region champ Hazard in the semifinals is proof enough for me that the Crusaders are the clear-cut top team in the region this year.

It is easy to be 23-6 when you play Riverside twice, the David school twice, and Piarist twice. not to mention that JBS is in the easiest district. Who couldn't beat Jenkins, KCC, and LCC. Well maybe the district of Wolfe,Riverside,Jackson City, and Breathitt is but still Powell had a way rougher schedule last year. it doesn't matter what happened last year this is a new year and I see Powell and JBS in the regional final. But Powell will be the victor due to ball hogs on JBS.

JBS also beat Estill, a team Powell couldn't come within 22 points of when it really counted. They also beat Montgomery County (a school with a 4-A enrollment), Fleming County, Berea (in Berea's own tournament), and Perry Central.
I will agree with you, though, that June Buchanan should definitely upgrade their schedule. Maybe they have done that this year, I haven't seen their schedule. I would tell Piarist and Riverside that I would pick them back up in the future, but as for right now it wouldn't be benifitual whatsoever to either's programs for them to play in the next few years. Why play a game with an 80 point victory??? One team is demoralized and the other feels guilty.
Plus, how can you prepare for the traditional powers in the area by playing Piarist and Riverside.
If JBS wants to walk with the 'Big Dogs', then they're going to have to upgrade from a Poodle schedule to one that attracts the Pit Bulls of the state, or at least the mountain area.

I agree with you lookayanner. I really see JBS and Powell being in the regional finals due to their starting line-ups being the two best in the region. If JBS does upgrade their schedule and play top notch teams come region they should blow by everyone until they get to Powell. I could see Powell and JBS as one of the best up tempo regional final games in recent memory. I give the edge to Powell though because they have a deeper bench of guards and when JBS's guards get tired of guarding them who are they going to go to to play some tough defense against Powell's 6 or 7 guards.

Actually Powell may not even be the best team in the 56th district, much less the region. I still think the 56th is Lee County's to lose. They did lose the 6'5 Tyler Rich from last year's squad, but the Bobcats have a solid core of players coming back this year : Brandenburg, the Liesengang twins, Johnson, Fetters, and several more quality kids.
Lee is the district champs, and will continue to be so until someone can prove otherwise. With the district being payed on a neutral court this year (Owsley), I think Powell may have an uphill battle achieving that goal.

LOOKAYANNER has a good point lee are the d champs. but imo i think no matter where it is played has a good chance of winning. they will prove that they are the team to beat. Not saying that its gonna be a smooth ride but like lookayanner said it will be an uphill battle for powell to win
#42
Don't worry about JBS's schedule, it will stand up to any bodies.
#43
Don't worry about wearing their guards down either. Don't think you can.:dontthink You will just have to try it and see.

Collins makes a difference. It would take a nut, not to know that. Rolleyes

How many games did they win last year with the same leadership and players? If they have 12 seniors this year, why are no other grades playing? I find it hard to belive that only 12 kids out of the whole school want to play basketball. And it has been that way for the last 4 years? Will they even have a team next year or will they be all freshman? And I still stick to my first statement. Why not work to having a winning season or at least being able to compete in your district with the same group of players you had last year before telling everyone you are going to win region.

I agree. Check my post #39. Powell no doubt will have a decent team this year, and their new coach had a good year at Jackson City last season, but Lee County is the defending district champion and will not be a pushover this year, and Estill will be okay too. Plus, the tournament is played at Owsley, which has its advantages to the host school.
Getting out of the district is the first priority, then worry about the region.

All I have to say is BRING IT ON!!!

Powell and JBS have never played before. Each game that a team plays they will usually have to play a different style to win. Some games will be up and down the floor non-stop. Other games may be just to get it in a half court set. IDK how JBS likes to play but from what I seen last year Powell likes to set it up half court, but they also have the ability to push the ball. In a game between JBS and Powell I would have to favor Powell. Reason being, Powell has more depth in their bench and I know all of them can play. Experience does always help in big games. All of the losses that Powell had last year were within in just a few points. They lost to Perry Central by 2 and to Montgomery by like 2 or 4 points. I'm for Powell all the way, I hope to see them in the final with JBS just to see if everyone can support what they are saying.
#50
I hope JBS and Powell play in the finals too.
#51
They both will have good teams this year
#52
No body knows how this year will go. either team could get beat on a given night. If they did play each other , that would mean both teams got by some very tough competition. I wouldn't get on here and say who is going to win. You may have to eat that big talk. It's mighty hard to swallow. I just hope everyone plays their best and have no injuries. I hope the best team wins and they make the 14th look good at Rupp.
#53
What is usually the case in these kind of discussions is everyone banters back and forth about teams like Powell and June Buchanan winning the region......and then the usual suspects, Perry Central or Hazard, sneaks in and wins it all. So in the end, as the old saying goes, talk is cheap. Teams have to prove themselves when it really counts.
#54
Well lets just settle what LOOKYANER said then. How about we all stop talking about who is going to win. After the first 10 games lets look at the records of both Powell and JBS. Then we can start to make some predictions then.

Yea

Well I do know that it was Estill that beat Powell at districts last year, and now Estill is hurting for stars, and Powell is loaded with them. So I think that Estill will be a pretty easy win for Powell, and yea maybe Lee, JBS, and PCC will be tough games for them but I think they will prevail. I agree that we can't go predicting that they will win the whole 14th, but I think they will definitely be much higher than they were last year, with a new coach and a team full of experienced seniors, Powell is really going to suprise people.
#58
no way powell county wins the 14th region, JBS is your region champs and they have a good showing at Rupp, Powell is very tough. dont get me wrong, but JBS is just to strong, with Stepp,Cox and Collins coming back from a knee injury JBS is the front runners. if Collins had not got hurt JBS beats Hazard in the region semi's and Jackson City to go on and have a better game against Madison Central than Hazard
#59
Powell could very well win the region. they are my pick.

Dude, did you not just read where we all said to stop predicting who will and will not when the region? No one but God knows, and We also said that we are sick of hearing about Collins on this thread. Everyone knows, no denying that Powell will be an awesome team this year, and this is not coming from somebody that is from Powell. JBS is good, but like Powell Fan said up there, Powell has never played JBS, so no one knows what the game will turn out like. Let's look back at some of the games Powell lead by 10, 15, 20 pts up until the fourth quarter, where their coach (practically begging to get fired) would put in the less experienced players and when the losing team caught up he wouldnt switch back to his better players. I do not think that Coach Lively is going to do that this year. Plus everyone keeps mentioning Estill, and They are going to be a pushover this year. They lost Puckett, Dixon, and Reese, their top players and now they are left with Berryman, who is a very good player and Napier who is the short halfway decent outside shooter. Besides that they have nothing. So lets cut all the bull crap and stop making opinions and look at the facts!!!!:devilflam TongueirateSho
