According to the Louisville & Lexington papers
(http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs...1/SPORTS05 &
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/spo...533242.htm ),
the Board of Control approved a recommendation by the football advisory committee to "delay" the start of the regular season by a week for the next 2 years (8/24/07 & 8/29/08).
This means they'll start the same weekend that VA does next year. Since KY teams won't already have a game under their belt, and since the new alignment will give most teams more non-District slots to fill, I think more VA & WV teams will pop up on the schedules next Summer.

I like the later start.
However, I don't like later championships.
I would've like to have seen the open week eliminated and the playoffs start the same time.

15 straight weeks? That's a little much, dotcha think?
Shoot, SW VA teams that opened a week after the KY teams get 2 off weeks. Yeah, I think that's a bit much, but Eastern/Northern VA basically controls the rule-making and most of them don't want to play a game before school starts. And since they rely on kids for Summer help at the beach & Kings Dominion, the state rule says schools open AFTER Labor Day - unless you have a history of bad-weather, which is how we get to start "early" - around Aug. 21 or so.
Anyway, I think mid-August has been too early for either school or football to start. I just hope we see more OOS match-ups. Who wouldn't like to see Matewan play Pikeville or Belfry? And maybe Haysi can get East Ridge back.

Football coaches may like the later starting date. But I would say there are some basketball coaches pulling their hair out a lot of players will miss another week of practice.

Matewan struggled w/Shelby Valley.
I have seen all three and Matewan would get spanked by either Belfry or Pikeville.
Now, Grundy v Pikeville is a matchup I'd like to see year in and year out.
Just my opinion.

Man, I woulda LOVED to have seen Grundy-P'ville anytime in the last decade, but we've hit a bit of a slide now. But, you never know what next year might hold!

This kills basketball at schools like Belfry and Pikeville........

The basketball coaches were dead against this proposition. I think that it is a good descision based on the heat related problems that have come up over the last few years.

I think it is a good idea for the football team,,, Hurts kids playing b-ball. Ask Clark from Russell, when football was finallyover around Dec 2,,,, he came out for the team and was basiclytold- UH I have my team of basketball boys, you boys who play football will have to set the bench....... STUPID MOVE..............
