Doesn’t really matter if you run or pass a lot. What matters is that you “do what you do” very well. In 2021, Belfry was 8/20 passing… FOR THE WHOLE SEASON!!! And they won state.
Btw, what time does the scrimmage start Friday and how much to get in?

And they won state. When your four leading rushers all run for over 6 yds a carry, 2 of them 10 ypc, and one of them being one of if not the best running back of the 21st century in this state playing his 5th year of HS football... you don't have to throw the ball that much. Other teams do not have that luxury, especially the ones that are not option based. You can count the teams on one hand that do not run the under-center or spread option that run it that consistently, and maybe only 1 or 2 are ever in the hunt. Even the most run heavy teams utilize some sort of air attack.

More importantly, this scrimmage is another step for Belfry to continue to step forward after what happened in the offseason. I mean for starters, the Belfry Pirates have not had a game without Coach Haywood since Nitendo, Diet Mtn Dew, and Disposable Cameras were invented. I think having a good showing is crucial for not only the mindset of the fans (since they return essentially everyone) but the players as well. Should be a ton of athletes for both teams.

Both teams return a lot, that’s for sure. Raceland lost around 400 yards rushing, 500 yards receiving, and around 100 tackles with the graduation of Cooper, McKee, and Sammons. Belfry returns the house in the backfield and damn near the house defensively. Here’s what I’m looking for out of Friday…
Has Raceland gotten any stronger upfront on both sides of the ball?
Will Raceland change the dynamic of the offense? Not necessarily throwing the ball more, but will start utilizing more intermediate passing game concepts?
And finally, how does Belfry look without Haywood? I for one don’t expect much change. Matt Varney has been there a long time himself.
I don’t expect a win or loss out of either team. This has been an awesome scrimmage series for Raceland. Hopefully both teams with high expectations can avoid the injury bug this Friday.
Also, side note. Middle school expectations are high for the 8th grade this year. Will be a good night of football with them starting off with Belfry MS at 5:30 with the varsity to start shortly after.

That’s the difference. Belfry has the style of running backs and offensive lineman that fit that scheme perfectly. They get those guys consistently.
Raceland just doesn’t have that kind of personnel. They are just not the type of team that can line up on 3rd and 5 and bully good teams.
Running the ball is fine, it’s the predictability that costs you against good teams.
What’s that old saying? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

Raceland did pretty good last year at bullying people. But Raceland inside the 40 is going to go for it on 4th on if they don’t convert it n a 3rd a 5. They look at it like a team should u got 2 downs to get that 5.

Will there be a stream of this game?

The truth is nobody is stopping Pikeville in 1A. Raceland couldnt pass the ball if they had Joe Namath at QB. 1A is going to be all panthers this yr.

Nobody was stopping Pikeville last year and then nobody was stopping Raceland. Neither team finished the season with a gold trophy…a lot of things can happen between now and December.

A lot of teams are going to try to copy/paste the success of Sayre last year.
The old days of being the most physical team always wins is changing. Sayre beat two teams that were much more physical than them-Raceland and Pikeville-by using finesse.
Everyone is counting Sayre out. They have the best coached team in 1A and it's not close. They are the closest thing in 1A to "modern" football. These old school smashmouth teams are going to struggle against them for years to come if Pennington stays there.
Also, Sayre has 50 kids on their updated KHSAA roster. They are going to be a problem. No one in 1A knows how to defend them.

The only thing im able to source is Belfry is really fast and very emotional. Those boys have been sitting on some emotions for awhile….its good to let them out
08-08-2025, 10:11 PM
Until Raceland fans are able to "source it" I'm guessing bloodbath...
I text someone that’s there it’s currently one score apiece….idk any ins and outs ….just one score apiece
Update…Belfry scored again. It seems Belfry scores on gash runs and the Rams have to drive the length of the field. Hmmmm I’ve read this book before
Raceland scored again…through the air
Each team has scored one more time and now the jV is in. Listen….i just tried to get something for yall. Maybe later someone can give more depth but I was just relating messages from two different people so don’t shoot the messenger

I’m here. Been here since 5:30. Raceland had the better MS team imo. Alot of rotating in and out though.
HS Varsity…damn Belfry is fast. Just about everywhere. That being said…so are we. We are a lot more explosive than I thought we would be. Belfry is the better team. But I really like what I’ve seen out of us tonight. Intermediate passing game, quicker pace. It’s hard to say for sure how a real game would go…but I’d say 2-3 score game. 35-21ish type of game. Both JV groups have looked really physical and competitive. Biggest thing I take away…
Belfry is still Belfry and Haywood’s legacy is in good hands.
The Rams are definitely stronger than we were last year. Haven’t been thrown like ragdolls this time around.

Belfry breaks some big runs. As the night goes on, we have held our own. We have been more consistent offensively. Varsity back in. Rams score on teo big plays. Scoring total for the night is now 5 scores Raceland and 2 for Belfry.
Rams are more physical this year than I anticipated. Very good night of football! I absolutely love this scrimmage. Awesome for both teams.

Raceland scored 4 times total.
Belfry had 3 fumbles lost.
All of the Rams touchdowns were through the air except for one score.
The Rams passing game looked the best I have seen in a long time.
It was a far cry from last year when Belfry dominated Raceland in every aspect.
At the end of the game, both teams did a series with down and distance. Neither team could score and turned it over on downs during that period with the starters in.
By my final count, Raceland scored four times total and Belfry scored two times total. One of Raceland scores was JV.

I was thinking we scored twice on the one series, but it must have been short, bc we would have flipped the field if that were the case. It got really hard for me to tell at times what was varsity and what was JV lot of similar sized kids and similar numbers. Also had both groups rotating a lot. I can’t say enough about the respect I have for the Belfry program and the Pond Creek community. I hope we keep this scrimmage going for years to come.

Just call Ashland boys and tell them we forfeit!
I would also like to add that it’s kind of unfair to run the triple option when we aren’t allowed to hit the QB.
They are a good team but they were not the best team in the field tonight

If Raceland is way better than Belfry then that tells me one of two things.
