Round 1:
Harlan County over Knox
Knox has plenty of talent, but they have played one of the weakest schedules in the region. When it comes down to a possession by possession battle against quality competition, they’ve struggled to get the job done. Harlan County advances.
Corbin over North
North Laurel is stacked with talent, but in a win-or go home scenario, I trust Tony more than I trust Valentine. Corbin moves on.
Bell County over South Laurel
This will be the best matchup of the first round, but I give Bell the edge.
Clay County over Pineville
This one will be closer than most expect. Levy is an outstanding coach, but at the end of the day, Clay just has more firepower.
Round 2:
Corbin over Harlan County
Tony is a different beast when it comes to the region, and I think this is the week Corbin starts clicking.
Bell County over Clay County
Brad’s team has battled through a tough schedule all season, and I believe that experience pays off here. Bell moves on.
Round 3 (Championship):
Bell County over Corbin
Corbin is arguably the most talented team in the region, but I still don’t think they’ve fully meshed. In a close one, I think Sizemore leads the Bobcats to Rupp.

Harlan County vs South Laurel in the championship game. I think South will prevail in a close game, probably no more than 2-4 points.
03-02-2025, 01:23 AM
I cannot remember the last time the 13th was this balanced. 8 good teams with 3-4 potentially being really good teams. It feels like a Harlan County vs. South Laurel final as most of us predicted preseason. No other result would really surprise me though. As a Tiger fan, I am NOT overlooking Pineville. They won that District for a reason, they’re a good team.

Very close to what I'm thinking. But don't sleep on North. I think South dispatches of Bell, although I'll root for the Cats. Will be hard for Corbin to beat North three times. If North navigates their way past Corbin and Harlan County, they could find South waiting, which means South would have do the trifecta and beat the Cards for the third time. Never an easy task.

I would bet that if Les Dixon or John Henson checked their 13th region history they might possibly find that the combined number of wins by the 8 teams in the field this year is the most ever entering the tourney. I have said many times that if HC and SL were in opposite brackets there is a great chance they meet in the finals, but more than a couple teams could derail that clash of current 13th region Titans.. I like our Black Bears chances to make a run, but they will need to bring their A game each night to get back to Rupp. Whatever happens in this tourney and beyond the era of 2 D-1, all state players Trent Noah and Maddox Huff over the past 6 years has been one special show to see. Those 2 along with other special supporting players along for the ride has been a show for the ages. Go Black Bears!!!
03-02-2025, 04:38 PM
You're probably right. I doubt we've ever had all 8 teams with at least 19 wins. Seems like there is usually at least one team with a losing record and another two with 15 wins or so.

I do rankings every March for the following year. I had South first and HC second, and so did the Cats Pause in July.
I don't do any picks during the season. Harlan County is playing well and has some great big-game experience after last year, but several teams could win.
I never know if I pick who I want to win or who I think will win when it comes to the teams I cover every day, so I usually just watch the games and see what happens. I'm going to the state tournament either way, but it was awfully fun last year to see so many Harlan Countians in Rupp Arena and watch the Bears make history.

What about the semis? I like Harlan Co. by 10 or so over North. The Jags are definitely playing well, but I think Harlan Co. will just have too much firepower for them. I feel much stronger about the second semi. I don’t see any way Pineville gets to 40 points against South’s D. South can be a pain to watch occasionally on offense, but I think they win this one easily, something like 58-38.
03-07-2025, 09:15 PM
Pineville has 4 kids that can score, I don’t think there’s much chance South holds them under 40 points. I think Pineville could be competitive in this game, but South will pull away late. I haven’t seen North play, but I will Tomorrow. I like this HC team’s chances but it feels like North could be a tough out.
03-07-2025, 10:11 PM
I've heard how good Pineville is all year and didn't buy it, until the last two games against Clay and Knox, if the game gets into the 60s, Pineville wins. Davis gonna have to turn that game into a rock fight, which is what he's best at.
03-08-2025, 02:18 AM
I would love to see Pineville win this thing. That would be such a great story. Like VH, I just think South will be too much for the Mounties. Davis' defense will put the clamps on the Lions, I'm afraid. I think Van's assessment is pretty spot on. I hope he and I are wrong. As far as the other game. I said it before the tourney started---don't sleep on North. I thought they would beat Corbin and have a real shot at beating the Bears. I'm still leaning towards the Bears but wouldn't be at all surprised if North comes out on top. I think it will be a bit closer than what Van predicted. I could see either team winning by a couple of buckets. Gonna be a good one.

Not saying they’ll beat South but Pineville is WAY better than anyone has talked about all season and got better throughout. As a Tiger fan, we did a lot of good things (and some bad) and just could not get back tied or take the lead with them. As someone said above, they’ve got 3-4 kids that can flat out play. It’s not a fluke that they’re in the semis AND won that district.
03-08-2025, 10:20 AM
I will give you this. Pineville has scored at least 73 points in each of their last 11 games. South has only scored 70 points or more four times all year! Isn’t that crazy? But I still think their defense is just so good that Pineville won’t be able to put enough points up, I’m sticking with 58-38 South.
03-08-2025, 11:27 AM
This is the time of year that Cinderella awakens. Hard not to like Pineville, and as a SL fan, I would love to see Sawyer running the point here on the south side.
To me, it’s going to come down to South’s defense and length. I’ll take South by 10, but the Lions will keep it very competitive.

If Davis gets out of Maybe way, South wins big, if Davis hold him to 10 shots or less, south still wins put it will be tight.
