Augusta 74 Mason County 72
#1
Well, Brian Kirk must be rethinking his game plan after that one! Losing to Augusta, and none other than Jason Hinson, is like the ultimate plot twist no one saw coming. Mason County’s first loss against a district opponent in the regular season since 1997-98? That’s like a historical event, and poor Kirk’s probably looking at the record books like, “Wait, is this a typo?” And let’s not forget—this is Augusta’s first regular season win over Mason County, so you know Hinson is out there like, "Did we just break the space-time continuum?" Maybe Kirk should start prepping for the next matchup by studying all the ways to avoid a repeat of this upset... because if history’s going to be made, he probably prefers it to be in his favor!

Big win for little A-Town, Hinson can get as much out of nothing as any coach out there.  With that being said, Mason County might just have the worst team they have had in the past 30 years.

Yes, could Brian Kirk be on the hot seat? Well, if that seat’s any hotter, it might just turn into a sauna! Losing to Augusta for the first time since ’97-98?   OUCH

First time The Panthers beat the Royals for the first time since the 2016 district tournament. It is Mason County’s first loss against a district opponent in the regular season since 1997-98. It is Augusta’s first regular season win over Mason County.

You could also include the 40 point thumping by Montgomery a couple nights before.

That triangle of Mason, Bracken, and Augusta has been a Peyton Place for the last several years.

So is this Mason's first regular season district loss against just Augusta? Or to any district opponent?

Any district opponent since 97/98

The wheels have fallen off for Brian Kirk. Could this be something that is part of the Reed brother's situation? Kids/Parents not wanting to be at Mason anymore? Is Kirk on the hotseat? Lots of question concerning the might Royals of Mason Co.

I honestly thought it was a typo that this was their first regular season district loss since 1998, being the basketball junkie and number cruncher that I am, I just wanted to see how many consecutive wins they had between then & now, luckily KHSAA records date back to the 1997/98 season, and I found one problem. I looked at it over and over just to confirm it, but Mason Co. had a 75-57 loss to St. Patrick on December 7th, 1999, which was their 3rd game of the season, it shows St. Patrick as a member of the 39th district during that season. Not trying to ruffle any feathers or be a party pooper, but I was genuinely interested in seeing how many games they had won since that last loss, just stating that I'd found another loss after the 97/98 season. If I am wrong, or just delusional or crazy then call me out on it lol.

The 39th is a very weak 4 team District, consisting of Mason County, Bracken County, St. Patrick, and Augusta,  The three later teams all being All A schools.  The 2/3 years that Bracken County had the Reed boys, Mason County would not schedule them.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but the talent at Mason County has been on the down hill slide for some time now.  With Jake Feldhaus leaving to go play for his uncle, the program is really in a valley.  The Reed boys would have no doubt attended Mason County if Daddy had not gotten the head coaching job at Bracken County.

Funny you say that, when I was looking back at the late 90's/early 00's, it was at one time a 6-team district that looked to be dominated by Fleming Co. Looking at Mason Co schedule, Fleming wasn't anywhere on it for the 97/98&98/99 seasons, but did play them both years in the district championship, both losses. So obviously this has been a reoccurring theme for Mason Co dating back nearly 30 years ago.

I'm not 100% sure, but to the best of my knowledge, no.

After some research, I see you are correct.  They attended grade school at Atown.  Blake, the older brother, is listed as a 7th grader on the 2018/19 roster.

Spoke to a friend on this:

Yes, this is Mason's first regular season loss to Augusta. As for Mason's last loss vs. Augusta in 2016, Kirk was Augusta's coach.

Yes, the Reeds played at Augusta in middle school. They were sent there since dad was not getting any coaching opportunities at Mason and due to a prior situation at Bracken (see below).

Dad only took the Bracken job because Augusta hired back Hinson. This was a "pissing match" since Augusta took Bracken's coach and Bracken wanted to make Augusta hurt by hiring Reed and bringing his two sons (I guess for stealing back their old coach?). Dad coached at Bracken (freshman) in 2014-15 and was fired for bringing outside kids to work them out in the gym.

Mason did not schedule Bracken for two seasons due to conflicts regarding the Reeds.

And I thought the mountain teams had drama. This was gold getting some of this information!
