Paintsville 2025
#1
Brian Melvin is the new head coach what’s next for Paintsville?
#2
This is a good internal hire. I believe this will keep their current team intact, but I don't see much of an appeal to anyone outside of the Paintsville area. For independent schools in this area to compete at a high level, you have to be able to recruit.

this is precisely what i think
unfortunately keeping their own kids isnt going to accomplish much....... bad hire for that reason

Nothing. Keeps current team in tack but the program seems not to have anything to offer. Melivn is a good man but just don't see anyone jumping at the chance to transfer there. Now if the kids sitting on the bench at JC would come over then maybe something may work , but don't see this program being successful for many years to come . They just don't have the numbers to compete with Hazard , Pikeville , Raceland and other 1A's

agree again. the hire keeps the bottom from falling out, but the ceiling gets lower
has melvin even been on the staff the last few years?

Let him assemble his staff and then assess. The more Paintsville people involved the better IMHO.

Everyone said the same shit about Hazard last year when they made their hire after have a couple bad years. No one predicted the turnaround they had this year. They hired their guy, got the kids in the weight room immediately and got to work and exceeded everyone’s expectations this year. Now yall are the sane ones praising Hazard. Like Jet said, let the man assemble his staff and see where it goes. Like I said in another thread, everyone fails to acknowledge what a good offseason strength/conditioning program will do for a team. With that said, Paintsville hasn’t really had an offseason program since Melvin stepped away a few years ago (he was the strength/conditioning coach under Chirico too).

You guys are right ill give him time

Ole Paintsville. I wish they were still the Paintsville that could compete year in and year out. The Chirico era!! Watching Daric Pugh face off against Kash Daniel was something I wish I could watch over and over again. Hope they get back on track with Melvin and spice things up a bit.

His philosophies and Hoskins philosophies didn’t mesh. So Melvin has been dedicating his time to our feeder programs at his alma mater because he cares, rather than jump ship.

As of now, these guys will be on the staff:

Zach Gound-played QB/DB at Johnson Central under Jim Matney from 2011-2013. Knowledgeable young man who is also big into strength & conditioning.

Glen Reeves - needs no introduction. A ton of coaching experience. Defensive Coordinator for years. Coached under Chuke Williams, Jim Matney and Joe Chirico. Also served some time as a head coach. Some may say he’s getting up there in age, but this ol feller is still as sharp as a tack.

Matt Runyon - Paintsville alum and Pikeville College Football alum. Offensive line coach under Joe Chirico.

Ryan Burchett - defensive coach and special teams. Been with the program for 10 years probably.

Tyrese Allen - most of y’all know who he is. Recent alumni, signed with WVU. Spent one season in Morgantown before transferring to Murray State. I’m sure he will play a big part in the Dline development.

Matt Porter - been around the program since Chirico came.

Noah Copley & Tyson Jenkins - young guy, played under Chirico. Wanna help and learn

There are a few more in the works, including an offensive coordinator, but that isn’t finalized yet so I’m not mentioning his name yet just in case it falls through. Don’t want to cause any conflict at his current school.

Solid. As you mentioned, needs an experienced OC to complete the staff.

Did they get the offensive coordinator and have they had any interest from kids outside the program

Biggest thing I see with the staff is they all either coached or played under Chirico. That’s a big thing, imo. Now I don’t think they have the same ability to pull kids in as Joe did, but that being said, when He left for GRC, and Melvin stepped away, the kids that were coming into the program suddenly stopped in an instant. Melvin may have that ability to bring kids in as well. Never know. I think this is a very solid staff with a good mix of experience and young guys that will keep kids fired up for the program.

Nope. I’m a Raceland guy lol

The best thing Paintsville could have done is get a bunch of guys together who really care about Paintsville kids and Paintsville football to coach Paintsville football. I think they'll take a lot of hard licks the next couple of seasons, but the culture at Paintsville needed to be rebuilt and the only people that can do that are people who care very deeply about it. I think Paintsville admins recognize this and are working to repair the damage. Paintsville football may be down, but they aren't out just yet. Unfortunately for them, they'll get to experience what Pburg fans had to experience for a couple of seasons of getting beat pretty badly nearly every week for a few seasons, but they'll come out stronger for it as long as they keep guys on staff who truly love and understand those kids and love that program.

Don’t know if the kid was a senior or not. Alex Johnson sat out in the scrimmages they was another QB and he didn’t look too bad

Aaron Slone has been hired by the school and will be the Offensive Coordinator. Slone was the QB at Madison Central during the Damien Harris years. Also aged QB at Upike and was also a graduate assistant.

Derek Newsome has also been hired and joined the staff.
