Prestonsburg 2025
#1
the biggest question i have going in to the offseason is this
is prestonsburg back?
#2
Prestonsburg returns 20/22 starters.

No one in 2A returns more starters than Prestonsburg and this group is coming off a regional championship appearance that they hosted. They’ll be the favorite to win their district, they’ll likely be one the top teams in RPI, and all this will likely lead to the Blackcats seeing Beechwood, Belfry or Breathitt County in the regional championship round next season.

Due to 2025-26 realignment, Leslie County enters 2A district 7. This will now make it a 5 team district (Pburg, Leslie, Martin, Floyd Central and Knott). I do believe Pburg will be the odds on favorite to repeat as district champs considering Leslie and Martin Co lose a lot due to graduation. Leslie and Martin Co will still field competitive teams capable of upsetting Pburg if the Blackcats don’t bring their A game. I think Knott and FC fight it out for 4th seed in district. Knott returns most of their team, so they’ll be the favorites over Floyd Central.

Biggest things Pburg needs to work on this off season is just getting in the weight room and getting bigger and stronger. They were outmatched physically by almost everyone they played last season. The Blackcats played hard and played fast though and because of great conditioning, Pburg outlasted many of their opponents in close games, but teams like Breathitt and Somerset were hard to stop because they used their size well.

Logan Stumbo will likely be the leader on this team in 2025. He’s one the best LBs in 2A and the mountains. Very smart, directed a great Pburg defense this past season, and I look for him to become the all time leading tackler at Prestonsburg next season. He’ll wind up being a 4 year starter at Pburg. Great kid as well.

Kain Patton will be Prestonsburg’s best offensive weapon next season. He’ll start at RB and I’m sure you’ll see him at WR as well. He was probably the best football player on the field for Pburg this past November. Made a ton of plays on defense and was great with the ball in his hands as well offensively. He’s extremely elusive and plays football like someone who’s much bigger than he really is. I look for him to have a monster senior season. He’s one of those dudes that if they were 6’0+ 200lbs I think college coaches would be beating down the door to sign him. Kid is a baller.

QB Bryce Holbrook will be a junior and this’ll be his 3rd year behind center for Prestonsburg. He’s accounted for nearly 1400 yards and 21 TDs as the Blackcat quarterback. He’ll need to step up as a leader with this team going forward. I believe he managed Pburg’s offense about as well as you could hope this past season considering all the injuries and stuff the offensive line dealt with all season. I think if he can continue to improve and the OL can stay healthy and improve also that Pburg can have a dangerous passing game.

I hope to see Daniel Adams back at full strength. This guy is a legit 6’5 280lb OL/DL who played sparingly last season because of a knee injury. He had surgery and should be 100% by April or May. That’s huge for this program if he can stay healthy for his senior season. He’s could be a difference maker.

I’m excited for this offensive line group in 2025. I expect the starting offense line to be:

LT- Karston Johnson (SO)
LG- Noah Price (JR)
C- Cayden Reynolds (SO)
RG- Donnie Stephens (SR)
RT- Daniel Adams (SR)

I think there’s some JV guys that can help with depth next season as well and possibly a freshman or two.

I expect Colin Hatfield, Drake Hatfield, and Brody Hicks to join Kain Patton and Bryce Holbrook in the backfield. The Hatfield boys have continually proven themselves to be excellent football players. Brody Hicks could become one of Prestonsburg best players as a sophomore. Kid could honestly emerge Prestonsburg’s power back this next season if he gains the confidence. He’s already 6’0 190lbs. I could see him pushing 6’1 205lbs by next fall. He’ll be an animal.

Your main receiving targets are likely to be Kain Patton, Brady Allen, Drake Hatfield, and Clay Runyon. I think incoming freshman Christian Click and maybe another could play some varsity mins at receiver. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Click start.

Defensively the Blackcats should be one of the best in 2A both statistically and talent wise. Logan Stumbo and Maddox Pugh will lead the defense. I think Clay Runyon steps into Alex Harris role. I think DL will consist of Noah Price, Donnie Stephens, Baron Craft, and Brody Hicks. LB corp will be Stumbo, Pugh, Colin Hatfield, and Runyon. DBs are likely to be Kain Patton, Drake Hatfield, and Bryce Holbrook. Maybe freshman, Christian Click finds a spot here as well.

I think it’s no secret now that Shawn Hager will be joining the staff at Prestonsburg to coach along side his son, Wesley Hager. Shawn brings a lot of experience and knowledge to a young and energetic staff. I think he’ll help with things tremendously.

Blackcats JV team should be lethal. Really talented group coming up from feeder schools. That development will be crucial for future success at the varsity level. Very glad Pburg is finally getting to a point where they don’t have to rely on freshman to play varsity anymore and these guys can gain confidence and develop a year or two at the JV level. A talented JV team means a talented scout team as well for the varsity to practice against, which will help tremendously.

Expectations have returned to our traditional standards at Prestonsburg, in my opinion. Win district and compete for a regional championship. I think Pburg has made the state semi finals 8 times and been to the state championship twice in 100 years of existence.

2025 season will be Prestonsburg’s 100th football season. First game was played back in 1925 vs rival Paintsville. I think the plan is to rekindle a traveling trophy between the two schools again going forward, which should be fun for the rivalry.

I’ve heard rumors also of kids interested in transferring to Prestonsburg from surrounding schools. I think it’s great that Pburg is viewed again to some families and athletes as a possible destination. If Prestonsburg wants to compete for state championships then transfers are going to play a major role in achieving those goals. Hard to compete with Beechwood, LCA, Owensboro Catholic, Mayfield, etc without transfers. I’m grateful for the 2024 team and that they could restore Prestonsburg back at the table with homegrown talent, but the only way forward is with the addition of outside talent, which increases competition, and gets the best out of your talent pool. Positions will have to be earned going forward and that’s a good thing.

I already can’t wait to see what this staff and team can accomplish during the off season and next fall.

Go Blackcats!

@BlackcatAlum that is a truly great post thank you so much for sharing all of that and taking the time... i wish i could award you this site needs more of these posts wow!

i had not heard yet that shawn hager was coming to prestonsburg.. big get for the blackcats and good for shawn too that is a great way to be after being overworked heavily at floyd central the last few years

20/22 is impressive too belfry brings back 19/22 if im not mistaken but they bring back all but 53 yards of offense production out of over 5000. gotta think it would benefit prestonsburg to work the rpi to avoid belfry... but belfry typically plays a tough schedule and ends up lower in RPI. ultimately pburg has to really make sure to beat martin county to avoid going to pond creek round 2

i have heard some smoke about transfers... two names ive personally heard are the johnson kid from paintsville and the maynard kid from martin county..... but you mentioned the prestonsburg QB will be a 3rd year starter... would either of those kids volunteer to change positions at prestonsburg??? exciting times for the blackcats... far more people are skeptics than believers still so they gotto get out there and prove it in year 2 under wes hager

I don’t expect Prestonsburg to bulk up their schedule just yet. You’re still trying to build off this past season.

Prestonsburg needs to develop depth and continue building momentum and establishing a winning culture right now. The Blackcats have talent, but most guys play both ways and depth was an issue this past season. If you play 3 or 4 really tough non district games, you’re opening yourself up for injuries and damaging your RPI as well. I think you’ll see going forward, teams are gonna start scheduling more for RPI.

The decision of who is QB is up to the coaches. I don’t think any quarterback in the history of football has ever willingly given up their spot. I think if Johnson comes in from Paintsville there will be a competition. I think Holbrook is a better passer, but Johnson is quicker and stronger. Hager used Dalton Elliott this past season at QB in shotgun some to utilize his speed. I could see Hager wanting to do the same with Johnson out of spread, but using Holbrook under center when they’re running belly. That would probably be the best case scenario to keep both players content. Holbrook could play WR. Johnson can also be RB and WR. Either way it’ll be hard for high school defenses to adjust to defending both if the things work out like they could.

I doubt Maynard transfers to Prestonsburg. I don’t think he’d be the QB. He’d likely be TE/WR on offense and safety on defense. That’s what he would play in college as well. Would love to have him, because he’s a great athlete, but they love him over there in Inez and I just don’t see him making the move. He’ll be Martin County’s offense in 2025.

There’s been some JC, BL, FC, Paintsville, and Martin Co names rumored. I’ll believe it all when they enroll. There’s definitely spots open for competition I’d say, because I’m sure the staff would love to not have to rely on so many to play both ways.

Without transfers you’ll see a step back from Prestonsburg this season. They benefitted from 3 huge game deciding calls this year, while catching the majority of their schedule on down years. I think they are probably the favorite to win the district still but again, it’s a very weak district.

If the Blackcats want people to respect them and stop questioning their legitimacy they HAVE to schedule at least 1 or 2 high quality opponents. Winning by less than a touchdown against the best teams you played out of district isn’t going to set anyone’s hair on fire.

While there was success, the coaching staff made multiple large mistakes but they got bailed out by having officials make calls that changed the outcome of games. I’m still not sold, I loved the success for the kids this season though.

I’m under the impression, nothing will ever satisfy the all mighty negative Blackcat.

Also, if all these transfers show up will the daddies be more accepting of them then the ones they ran off last summer?

I have heard from one of the kids who transferred from Prestonsburg that there were multiple coaches and parents who made comments about him “not being from Prestonsburg” during the offseason weights with the new staff.

This will have to change if they want to suddenly get the best players from surrounding schools to come to PHS.

The player you’re referring to was not ran
off. No one wanted him to leave.

Either way, that’s history. No need in bringing that up.

There are precisely three things you can count on in this life- death, taxes, and pessimism about Blackcat football from Concerned Bobcat.

At this point I take almost no joy in the Blackcats ability to continually prove you to be wrong and expose you for not knowing what you’re talking about, because it has become such a common occurrence. Week in and week out, Concerned Bobcat predicts the cats to lose and they win. Blame the refs, blame the lack of talent, blame somebody for Gods sake! I think you were actually correct in about two posts out of the dozens of posts you made that were dead wrong- 1) they lost to breathitt and 2) you ate A TON of crow this year.

Forgive me for having an extremely low opinion of the ability to discern football from someone who predicted the Blackcats to lose every game they played outside of ER and Lewis back in July when in fact they ended up playing within 2 scores in a regional championship game at home against a perennial state powerhouse all without their district POY. Not to mention that you stated a while back that Pburg should’ve went after Jarrell instead of Hager. Did you watch the 2nd round game? Maybe you missed it. But, please, please, continue to post your ignorant drivel on here, because I know for a fact that it fires the team up to be doubted. Hail Blackcats!

I agree with Blackcat Alum regarding the physicality of the Blackcats. I felt like we got exposed against Breathitt and Somerset. We held our own against Somerset for the majority of the game, but by the fourth quarter their size and strength wore us down. The Breathitt game was domination from start to finish. Heck, I saw one of our middle linebackers holding on to the jersey of one of Breathitt's running backs and he literally drug him ten yards down the field. It 's a must that we get bigger and stronger if we want to take the next step.

Offensively, it will hurt losing Elliott and Harris, but I'm telling you Patton could very well end up being better than both of them. If Patton can gain some weight and get stronger, he could be special. Along side of Patton you will have a solid running back core with Hicks, and the Hatfield boys. Our offensive line will be a year older and a year of experience will mean a lot heading into next year. I look for those boys to get bigger and stronger as well. This will be Holbrook's third year as a starter and I expect him to take a big jump from last year to this year. He looked more confident as the year went on and he will have a season under his belt with Hager's offense.

Defensively, there isn't any excuse for this to be one of the better units in 2A next year. With Stumbo as the anchor, I expect big things from this group. This group has the talent and heart, but they must get bigger and stronger. I know I mentioned it earlier but this was our Achilles heal last year was our size and strength. I was really impressed with Price last year on the defensive line, and Patton is a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball as well. One of the biggest things we must improve on is our ability to cover the pass. We were fortunate last year to play teams who didn't emphasize on throwing the ball, but when teams did, they seemed to have success.

I don't know how the addition of Shawn Hager will impact the staff. I hope he allows Wes to run the program without trying to step on his toes. I don't think he will, but you can never be for sure. If he understands his role, he will be a great addition. Prestonsburg's staff exceeded my expectations last year, and hopefully they can continue to develop. Wes has brought a lot of excitement back to this town and program and we are forever appreciative of what he and the boys accomplished last year. If we add a couple of transfers which have been mentioned, Prestonsburg could be a top five team in 2A next year. Only time will tell, but for now, Hail Blackcats!

Nobody get your hopes up, they are just going to play another weak schedule so they look good no matter what. Team would never beat Pikeville or Belfry in 100 games.

If Belfry doesn't get their "recruiting mojo" back after this group of freshman, they are in trouble. From what I have seen and heard, their middle school is as weak as it's been in a long time. They may need to coordinate with Pikeville and get their "blueprint" on how to recruit, because they are falling behind. On a serious note, Prestonsburg wouldn't have competed with Belfry this year, but I think they could have competed with Pikeville at the end of the year. Would we have beat Pikeville, no, but it wouldn't have been a running clock like most would think. We aren't where we need to be yet as a program, but we are heading in the right direction and before you "beef up" up your schedule, you better make sure you're at a point to do so. Do I think we need to add more competitive teams, yes, but to schedule teams you have no chance to win or compete in, does more harm than good. Hopefully, in a couple of years we will be at a point to where we can compete at a higher level and changes will be made.

Don't get our hopes up??? Has anyone on here claimed that Pburg could beat Pikeville or Belfry this year? I haven't seen it, if they have. Anybody on here claiming Pburg is going to win a state title next year? I haven't seen or heard it. These things take time and don't just happen overnight, but they usually start just like this- a young, smart, charismatic coach taking over and leading a program that is in the gutter and hadn't won a SINGLE playoff game or district championship in 8 years to an 11-2 record with a district championship and regional runner up trophy. Regardless of the strength of schedule (that he inherited from his predecessor, BTW) that's about as good a first season as anybody in Pburg could've ever hoped for and it is an incredible cornerstone to build upon to get them back to competing with the Pikeville's and Belfry's of our area again sooner rather than later. 15 years ago Pburg was competing with and beating those schools year in and year out, and honestly 15 years isn't that long ago for old timers like me. We were beating those schools then, and there's no reason that we can't do it again in the future. Just need time to develop kids in Hager's program from 6th grade to 12th grade. The predecessor's "voluntary" off-season weight program has been replaced by a legitimate weight program with accountability from top to bottom that begins this Monday. Hager was hired in March of '24, I believe, which is way too late in the off-season to develop a true strength program for the '24 team, and I think you saw the negative result of that against Breathitt and Somerset, but I think you'll see a noticeable difference in the strength of the Blackcats when they take the field next August after a full off-season with a legitimate S&C program.

Will the Blackcats win state in '25? I highly doubt it. It would take a ton of upsets in the 2A playoffs and a ton of luck. Can they beat Pikeville or Belfry next year? Again, I doubt it, but maybe we'll see? Can they host and win two playoff games every year moving forward after not being able to win 1 SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME for the last decade? Certainly, yes! And that is the point! I think that is now the low bar to clear moving forward instead of just hoping and praying to win one playoff game at some point. Can they catch lightning in a bottle one year in the next 10 seasons and ride a wave of talent to a ring? We'll see! Either way, people in the burg are excited for Blackcat football again and looking forward to football season in Blackcat country! When you've got used to winning the way we did in the 90's and 2000's it spoils you and then to go almost a whole decade without it.... Well, you can't imagine what it feels like in this town to even have the possibility to have it back to what it was (or better).

I pray that the Pikeville's and Belfry's never know what Pburg has felt like the last 8 years and just how much this '24 team means to this town. I tell you truly- it hasn't been fun to sit in the bleachers and know you're going to lose most of the games you play. I'm very thankful for what Coach Hager did in '24 and my hopes are higher now than they've been since 2014!

I don’t buy that for one second. Clay Runyon transferred to Pburg from Paintsville at the end of the season last year and everyone, players, coaches, parents etc etc welcomed him with open arms and have treated him like he’s been a Blackcat his entire life. So if you heard a former player say that, I’m gonna say it’s not true.

I can't disagree with the Pikeville part anymore and im not even a pikeville fan. Anthony would've showed the blackcats how to play ball. Not a player on the field could guard Hall for pikeville. He's one of the most explosive players i've seen in awhile. No team that has a barn burner with betsy layne and gets curb stomped by breathitt will ever and i mean ever come close to beating Pikeville, Belfry, johnson central or any other of the top mountain programs. Sure Prestonsburg has some athletes in Dalton, Harris, and Stumbo but 3 can not beat these top teams with athletes all over the field.

Two kids who both ended up at the same school had similar stories. Might have been a coincidence but that’s what I’ve heard. A third player who was at that school who transferred at a different time also mentioned it.

might have been attempting to cause issues but I’ve heard it from multiple people and there’s a parent who continuously talks about winning with “Pburg kids” on Facebook/Twitter while running down the transfer culture. It’s out there.

Pikeville loses a ton of seniors so Hager needs to step up his schedule and call Mac and do a two year contract if they return 20/22 and would have been a good game at the end of this season. Won’t be able to blame the former coach if he schedules a cupcake schedule for the next two like they had this year.

I'm pretty certain contracts are already signed for the 25/26 seasons for Prestonsburg's schedule and no Pikeville won't be on it.

I do think they'll play one another again in JV.

So who did they add that has a pulse?
#24
Here’s the thing with Pburg:
A successful season there is completely different than a successful season at Pikeville/Jc/Belfry. In the regular season, Pburg played in a barn burner with Paintsville (21-20 Final score). Then, Paintsville plays Pikeville and gets beat 41-0 in a game that could’ve been 80-0. The biggest regular season game Pburg plays is against Betsy Layne. Sure, Betsy Layne wins a lot of games, but who do they play? Also nobody. If you wanna go undefeated in the regular season and lose in the playoffs the first time you meet a team with a pulse, that’s fine. But don’t act like you could compete with the real mountain teams just because you have a good record. Winning against a bunch of nobody teams isn’t successful in my book.

If Pburg had multiple D1 players and a former NFL player as their HC, the schedule would be less important..

Must be still be a schedule full of cupcakes to run the win total up sounds like. That’s fine if that’s what they want to do but own it and not act like your king of the mountains because you win 9-10 games. The thing is I hope they get back to where they are a formable opponent in the near future but not goin happen playing Betsy Layne and the East Ridges every week.

He may be but this time he is speaking truth.

If you actually had interest in talking football I'd likely give a detailed response to this, but since your sole purpose of being on this board is to drag Prestonsburg and their coaches any opportunity you can get, I'll not waste my time. You're not worth it.
