Pikeville could go 3-7 with this schedule and still win a state title. One of the harder schedules you'll see anywhere in the state. They'll be in a dog fight this week and it will tell everyone a lot about where everyone stands in 1A.

Strength of schedule matters. These rankings do not. It’s why an 0-3 Pikeville and a 1-1 Raceland team are in the top 3. It’s also why come playoff time, even if they are both at or below .500, they will still likely be the favorites to be at Kroger. That all boils down to RPI though and bc of that, those two teams could very likely see each other prior to the championship game. Campbellsville is the only other team I would put within ear shot of either of them at this point. Hazards stock is improving, Paris stocked dropped. NCC holding steady with Sayre still, imo, being a dark horse. Hazard has been more physical than the teams they have played so far, but they will play a very physical and tough LCC team this week. Sayre doesn’t play much of a schedule so it’s hard to really grade them for me. I think there is a really steep drop off after #5 though.

I've been trying to figure out why NCC has fallen off so much in the last what 10 years or so?! You had to go through Newport Central Catholic if you were going to win a site championship for as long as I can remember. Now it seems like they're barely a top five single A school & not competitive with the top of the class anymore. Can someone help me understand what happened please?!

I think a lot of it has to do with the development of that area and the things Campbell County has been doing in that area. It’s very strange to look at a NCC roster and only see 40 or 50 kids. When we played them it was 60-70. There’s also a vast variety of options. It is however interesting, that within their classes, NCC and Highlands have both fallen off, while Beechwood just keeps on ticking. The fact that Highlands got knocked off last year when they did really surprised me.

When I played in the early 2000’s we won a district championship one year and felt pretty good about it. We had to play a 2 seed NCC in the second round and they ran through us like it was nothing.
For as long as I can remember NCC was a program that was known as a state powerhouse and even now I forget that the name on their jersey doesn’t mean what it did in the past.

NCC is down because of 2 factors..
1. Bishop Brossart adding football
2. Enrollment is down almost 40% from its hay day.

If Pikeville lose tonight again Raceland, they will start 0-6. I don't see them winning again Belfry or Ironton OH.
