My opinion is an assistant should be in it for all the right reasons and not just because their kid plays. Assistant should help with transferring what the head coach is trying to incorporate. Assistants should go above and beyond with watching films, scouting games and coaching tendencies of opposing teams. I also think assistants should be more on a personal level with the players than the head coach and report any issues within the team back to the coach when necessary. With all this being said. High school assistants don’t make any money and most of the time your going to end up with a dad sitting next to you on the bench.
Do you feel like assist coaches should spend time in the gym after practices working players out? Not talking about the whole team. Just a player or two couple times a week. Shooting machines, weights, conditioning, or basketball skill work? Especially if the coach was young with no kids to raise. Some assistants make 3/6 K stipends in this area. That’s not bad really.
