A great story occurred last night in Wayland, Ky as University of Kentucky signee and all-time KHSAA leading scorer Travis Perry came to Wayland to play Floyd Central in the historic Wayland Gym, the home of former Kentucky High School all-time leading scorer King Kelly Coleman. Props to the Mountains Sports Hall of Fame and whoever else that was involved for making this happen. Also props to Jammin Jamey Johnson and his WMDJ crew for the coverage that they provided. Jammin Jamey is one of the best in the business who goes above and beyond. For those of you that don't know he has a sports show that can he seen on the WMDJ Facebook page on Wednesday nights at 8 pm or heard online on their webpage. Below is a link to a few pics that were taken by the WMDJ crew.

Lots of defense played in that one. Great atmosphere and really cool event though.

Was cool to see Travis Perry play in King Kelly’s gym and he put up 30 points to boot. Lyon County is very good and every player can run and they pass the ball very well.
Me and my dad got to talking last night. Is there anyone that has King Kelly stories that they could share or anything?

I heard a story about when Betsy Layne played against King Kelly Coleman , but it was more about BLHS head coach Tommy Boyd. I do have his book, but haven't read it.

Yeah he’s definitely a TE or LB but Lyon County doesn’t even have a football team.

If you've not read Kelly's book yet, its definitely worth the read.

Neither could heat a decent girls team of today. I seriously mean that. Watch it. I’m sorry but Kelly Coleman was not impressive in the least. Shot a million shots. Lots of air balls. Shot off wrong foot on layups. It took me forever to figure out which player was Kelly Coleman. He would not be a starter on the weakest of teams from the modern era. I’m sorry but, just being honest. No organization on either team. Just whom ever had the ball shot it.

I've been a big fan of Shoulders dating back to last season.

The history of the gym is definitely pretty cool but honestly in my opinion KHSAA should not allow games to be played there. When you look at area around the floor and how narrow it is I just think it's a major safety hazard. The referees are forced to stay in bounds on the baseline and the players have no where to go but the wall underneath or in the bleachers even on the sidelines.

When people make this argument you also have to remember if they played today they’d also have access to the training and skill development facilities they didn’t back then and have the same coaching now. It’s like people saying Larry Bird couldn’t play in todays NBA.(12-17-2023, 03:39 PM)Spud6 Wrote: Was cool to see Travis Perry play in King Kelly’s gym and he put up 30 points to boot. That’s why you can’t compare eras. The game has evolved so much since the 50s. So watching it now on YouTube with how we see basketball now obviously it’s going to be a far downgrade. But Adolph Rupp and Jerry West said King Kelly Coleman was the greatest basketball player they had ever seen at the high school level.

I do get a kick out of watching a lot of those old games, especially at the high school level. I know the game that @Beetlejuice is talking about and have watched it as well. Aside from the wild shots which seemed to be pretty standard for the day, I always got a kick over how not a single player from either team dribbled the ball even once with their non-dominant hand.
