Turnovers were the difference tonight.

WMDJ said Pburg had 4 turnovers to FC's 1. Other than that, both teams traded punches and moved the ball up and down the field. I think we seen 1 punt all night.

Proud of the fight Prestonsburg had in them tonight. They could've laid down and few times and give up, but they kept playing hard.

Blackcats have dropped 3 straight, they haven't played a home game since 9/8. Have Knott Central and Breathitt County coming up. Got to keep heads up Blackcats and keep putting the work in. Season is still far from over. The road ain't easy, but it's not over.

Congrats Jags!

You sound a lot more positive than I think I’d be if I were a Pburg fan. I’m not sure how fans could say things are headed in a positive direction.

Where did I say that at?

Turnovers killed any chance PBurg had of winning. They looked really sloppy most of the game. Dalton Elliott was his usual solid self outside of a rare turnover. The defense also has to be better. Hopefully everyone can get healthier and try to knock off a hungry Knott Co team at home.

Worst football team in Floyd county is a hard pill to swallow. Unacceptable at Prestonsburg. Period.

I agree.  I'm never thought I would see the day that this would happen, but it's nice seeing the Bobcats on top.  How is Prestonsburg's feeder program looking?  I saw that they beat Betsy Layne for the middle school championship.  Is Coach Brewer keep all his players in the feeder system?

A lot of rumors of kids transferring out of the feeder. Not sure you can put any stock in it. Might just be frustrated parents.

I’d be frustrated too if the high school I was sending my kids to showed no care in the quality of their football program.

Either the coach changes his approach or they get a new coach. He seems like a nice guy but what he’s doing isn’t working.

Let me ask you a question. When was the last time that Pburg had a really good team in any sport? The last time I can remember was when Shane Simpkins won the region in baseball 10 years ago or so...They have been terrible in all sports for a long time.. Best I recall he got run out of the school system, because he overshadowed Derosset.

Derossett's last year at Prestonsburg he went to the second round of the playoffs

There's some Prestonsburg folks, but it's mainly folks outside of the program that just aren't aware of the state of the program. This isn't me making excuses, it just is what it is folks. Prestonsburg has some talented players, there's some good athletes that aren't playing football, but the positive thing is, there's talent coming up. The sophomore and freshman class currently at Prestonsburg has talent, add in the next 3 or 4 classes then you're going to have a solid football team in a year or two that can compete for a regional championship in 2A.

The interest level for football at Prestonsburg just hasn't been great the last several years. A lot of the best athletes haven't been choosing football. I don't see that being the problem with the next few classes entering the high school, so the talent level at for the high school football program should increase.

As of right now, Prestonsburg is young and inexperienced. There's little to no leadership in the locker room and the team is struggling against teams that have talent in the senior and junior classes, like Betsy Layne, Martin County, and even Floyd Central. These young and inexperienced players have to go through their growing pains and learn how to deal with adversity.

Coach Brandon Brewer, coach Derek Newsome, and the rest of the staff are making changes almost weekly to try and adapt their coaching styles to ways that'll best suit this teams talents. Heck just a few seasons ago, Pburg never threw the football, now they're dropping back and throwing it a dozen or so times a game and the passing game is still very much a work in progress. You can't teach boys that are used to running the football their entire football careers how to catch and run routes overnight. It takes a lot of time and a lot of reps. Same goes for the offensive line. They're young and outside of Joshua Elkins, the most experienced starter is a sophomore and none of them really have grasped how to pass block. Receivers have had problems catching the football all season, because they aren't used to catching footballs all that much, until these last few months. The route running has been a problem as well, but that again takes reps and time to develop. The quarterback is a freshman. He's talented, but he's adjusting to varsity football and having to understand how to make presnap reads, post snap reads, watch film, etc. Its A LOT to learn and most don't realize this at all.

I see the progress that's being made. Does it hurt to see Prestonsburg lose to Betsy Layne, Floyd Central, and Paintsville? Heck yeah it does. But I promise it doesn't hurt me more than it does these players and coaches.

This has been a rocky season, but I didn't really know what to expect coming into the season. I didn't think they'd beat Leslie County. I thought ER, Pike Central, Lewis Co, and Knott Co were our most winnable games. I thought Leslie, Martin Co, and Breathitt were losses and Betsy Layne, Paintsville, and Floyd Central would be toss ups. So far, those preseason predictions were about right. Betsy Layne turned out to be much better than I expected and Paintsville and FC were basically evenly matched contests. This team is 4-4 with Knott Central and Breathitt left on the schedule. If I had to bet on those two games, I'd say Pburg wins vs. Knott and loses to Breathitt. Finishing the regular season at 5-5. That's okay with me considering this team returned just 3 starters on each side of the from last season and only 4 had varsity experience. Call that settling for mediocrity or whatever, I call it being informed and knowing the situation.

Now as far as transfers happening, I haven't heard anything or seen any evidence of that happening just yet. I know folks on one of our youth teams got upset, but I think things worked themselves out. But if folks do move their kids to other schools, then it's going to be hard for Prestonsburg to ever get back to where it was competing for a district title every season. That's just reality. If you're one of those parents reading this post, I challenge you to go talk to the middle school coaches and the high school football coach before you do decide to move your kid. If you don't like what they have to say then move them. That's fair for all parties. I do know that no one at Prestonsburg, Adams Middle, Allen & Pburg elementary are chasing any families out of town.

Prestonsburg football is rebuilding. It takes time. Trust the process.

I dont remember exactly when his last year was, or who his last game was against but to just win the opening round game of the playoffs in most cases is generally not that great of an achievement, as most first round games are mismatched blowouts. Which leads me to believe that if he was beaten in the second round, that doesn't lead one to believe that he had a really good team at that time, right? But I do remember he was in charge when the football program fell in shambles. He was in charge when the mass exodus began, right?

Well, here are the facts on the youth programs. They are kinda dictated and ran by big mothed mothers....lol...Hardly a training ground for the high school program...And they are indeed causing some to look elsewhere because the bigger the mouth means they end up getting what they want.

And when it comes to little league baseball, I can honestly say that it may be the WORST ran little league program that I have ever seen. I realize though that the school has no control over that.

I think our youth parents are just very passionate and want to win just as much as their kids, if not more. A lot of parents forget at that age, football and youth sports isn't mainly about just winning. Heck, give me a team full of holdbacks that hit early puberty and I'll wear your team out that only has a few holdbacks and is mostly 5th graders with a playbook printed off Google. Youth sports at the middle school level is easily manipulated. To me, what's most important is are all the players on the team getting trained and developed. If the coaches are only focusing on a select few, then it doesn't benefit the team and those kids either quit or fall way behind in their development. That does effect the high school programs.

Prestonsburg’s record the past five years:
2018 2-9
2019 2-8
2020 3-5
2021 4-6
2022 8-3

So far this season they’re 4-4 and will probably be 5-5. I know last year they had a much better season but I don’t think you can call this a rebuilding year. This is still shaping up to be one of coach Brewers best season at Pburg.

They have to find a way to get excitement back into the program. When I said the coaches need a new approach I don’t mean offensive strategy. I mean how he manages the program from top to bottom.

Coach Matney flipped JC around in one season. Changed the mind set of the entire town. Coach Chiroco (and pburg transfers) saved a dying Paintsville team. Pikeville has brought their team back to the 90s dominance. It can be done with the right coach. Love to see coach brewer do it but right now he don’t seem to be that guy.

2014 was the last, what I would call successful at Prestonsburg 10-3, with a loss in the regional championship to Shelby Valley Simpkins was long gone.

Blackcat Alum as far as transfers go, I know of at least two going to play for the bobcats next season.

We have got to find a way to develop some talent. Prestonsburg has never been a football factory in the past. We’ve had kids buy and work hard and work their butts off in winter weights. We’ve got to get back to that if we are going to be successful in the future, in my opinion.

2014 was indeed a key year in the history of the Blackcats. They took 3 losses, all due to the failure of the coaching staff’s ability to manage a clock. They could have ran the clock out against Pikeville, Leslie County, and Shelby Valley, but instead choose to pass the ball, resulting in losses. Then, players were blamed for the loses but they weren’t having it. No one has said what transpired, but the following year 2 juniors transferred to Pikeville, playing prominent roles in their state championship. An entire 8th grade class transferred to Paintsville resulting in a state championship there, most young athletes chose soccer over football to avoid the atmosphere of Prestonsburg football. Two years later there was a coaching change but small schools can’t take that kind of damage. John is the winningest coach at Prestonsburg. He is partially responsible for pikevilles state champion lineup in 2015. Chirico should have sent him a state champions ring and the men’s soccer coach better send him a Christmas card every year. I’ll leave the current state of the program for the future.
