Knoxville Catholic Fighting Irish Corbin Redhounds
(12-1) (6-2)
Where : L.U. Gilliam Gym , Corbin, KY
When : 12/30/22 , Approx. 8:30 PM
Radio : 107.3 FM(T-107, Corbin)
Streaks: Catholic has won 5 consecutive games while Corbin has won 2 straight .
Series History: Tied at 4-4 .
Catholic has won the last two games in the series( 83-53 and 69-66 , both in the 2019/ 20 season). Seven of the eight games in the series have been played at Corbin.
Team Stats: Catholic is averaging 70.0 ppg and giving up just 50.6 ppg . Corbin is averaging 72.5 ppg and giving up 60.6 ppg .
How They Got Here: Catholic defeated Whitley County 88-59 and Doss 83-63 . Corbin defeated Bell County 76-54 and Newport 65-52 .
Knoxville Catholic Recent Accomplishments: 2022 Tennessee State Runner-Up ; 2020 Tennessee State Champion (Div II, AA).
Season Highlights:
Knoxville Catholic's only loss came at the hands of nationally- ranked Kenwood(Chicago, IL). The game with Kenwood was tied in the third quarter. Catholic posted wins over Hamilton Heights Christian Academy(Chatanooga, TN) and Richmond(NC), two very talented and highly-regarded teams in the 5Stars Hoops Jam.
Corbin hung tough against a very talented and highly-regarded Southridge(Miami, FL) team before falling 80-72 in the Smokey Mountain Classic in Gatlinburg. The Hounds posted an impressive 65-52 victory over a very talented Newport team last night in the Cumberland Falls Invitational.
Players to Watch:
For Knoxville Catholic, the guy to watch is super sophomore sensation, the scoring and rebounding machine, PF Deondrea Lindsey. He had 31 points and 9 rebounds against Whitley County and tallied another 26 points against Louisville Doss. Lindsey is being heavily recruited by a number if D-1 schools. Even though just a sophomore, he has already received offers from Georgia Tech, SMU , Georgetown(D.C.) , and Ole Miss. Coaches from Georgia, LSU, and Memphis, and more have also been in attendance to watch him play. In addition to Lindsey, Senior guard Yessan Warren ,as well as Caleb Asbaty have been big-time contributors . Others who have had double digit scoring efforts for the Irish this season are Alex Doerger and Super Frosh Cade Murphy.
Corbin is led by Senior guard Hayden Llewellyn. Hayden was in the top thirty-five scorers in the state last season and continues to put up some big numbers this season, as well. But Corbin is no one-man team, by any stretch. They may be the deepest team in the 13th region, with eight guys getting significant playing time , and seven of the eight already posting games with double digit scoring. Corbin has size( 6'6" Marc Warren and 6'6" Trey Worley) and plenty of athleticism with guys like Brody Wells, Eli Pietrowski , Carter Stewart, Zander Curry, and Kaden Elam.
Thoughts:
Corbin will need their best effort and execution so far this season to have a chance at pulling off the upset. They will somehow have to limit Lindsey's scoring and use their bigs to keep him off the boards and maybe get him in some foul trouble. They will need to play "hounding" defense and try to disrupt the offensive flow of the Irish. If they do this they still have to worry about guys like Warren, Asbaty , Murphy or Doerger lighting them up . The CFIT title is always an important goal for Pietrowski and his team and I expect they will give their best effort of the season. Will it be enough? I think the Irish may be a little too much for the Hounds in this one. The Hounds hang tough but lose by , let's say, 12. Maybe a couple of buckets closer if they can get Lindsey in some foul trouble.

The last time KCath was in the CFIT they beat the Hounds 83-53 in the Semis. I think this one will be closer than that margin. Hope the Hounds can hang around and surge late like they did against top-ranked John Hardin a few years ago. They almost pulled that one out. This Catholic team is better than that John Hardin team.
