Corbin 24 Pikeville 19 Final
#31
I think Pikeville win a state championship. Some of you underestimated Corbin and thought you were gonna win a cake walk. Corbin also has the two QB problem but finally made the right adjustments. Combs had a huge game, and the Elam kid has a strong arm, is gonna be a special QB. It was nice meeting you and talking some football with you, Bull.

Nice way to start the season. Congrats

It sounds like it was a solid opening game by both teams. I think that Pikeville will be favored against every other team on their schedule with the exception of Madison Central and they have to be considered a good bet to win another state title this season.

Corbin had an outstanding team last season and too many people have let the Johnson Central loss affect their opinions of this year's team. Corbin is a top 4A contender and has the talent to reach the finals.

Teams are almost always better off settling on a single quarterback, but it is not a bad thing to give two strong quarterback candidates plenty of snaps during competitive early season games to build depth at the most important position on the team. Even if it costs a team an early season loss or two, having a backup quarterback with quality experience at the position is great insurance for the rest of the season.

The realistic goal of both of these teams is to win state titles this season and I don't fault either coach for giving two quarterbacks extended tryouts. I don't think that either team hurt their chances of achieving that goal last night.

Seeing the game with my own eyes and seeing the talent displayed on both teams, i would have to agree Hoot.

I ended up not being able to attend this game last night unfortunately so I can’t really speak on the game. I’m happy for both of our young men playing qb especially Combs he’s a special young man off the field as well. As far as the qb controversy I’d hate to be a Dad and a coach where I had to coach my own child. That being said if some of our coaches would focus more on the team instead of prioritizing their son and making it apparent there was an agenda while doing it then I’d have less of a problem with all this.

Idk if you're talking about Elam but whether his dad is on the staff or not, he needs to be starting QB. It's just the right move.  Just like last year should have been Mills at QB and huff/combs at running back.  I don't see how anyone who sat through last year couldn't agree.

I do want to give Cameron Combs his due.... The kid was spetacular last night!. Cameron is one of the finest young men you will meet. He looked the part in both scrimmages and honestly when he was moved to running back, he looked like it was the right fit IMO for this team this year. He is just a pure raw athlete, can play any role needed and exemplified a true team player! I said before this game Cameron can walk on water. Kid Elam came in and honestly once they get this offense worked out and they begin to gel. Corbin took a big leap last night in the way I had them projected. Still alot of kinks to work out IMO but when you have the passing threat and running threat, you can shread a defense and Corbin displayed some of that in the 2cd quarter after being down 13-0 and punching 2 tds in a hurry. Kid Elam was the guy behind that, a defense can't outrun that kind of passing game. Just think, the kid came in and dominated, just give him a few games......

Having the running game now with a dominating running back like Combs then now all Corbin has to do is get Brody Wells involved offensively and the way Kid Elam passes the ball around and was checking down to find the open guy, now they just need some time to play and gel.

Game MVP:  Mr. Do it all!   Cameron Combs!

I know a lot of teams who would love to have Corbin's "problems" in terms of 2 kids who both legitimately can get the job done.

Corbin has the same issues with two QB's They made the right decisions last night, and Combs had a big game at RB.

I have said it before, Kid Elam is the real deal. I have watched lots of football and this dude is just a pure baller. Raw talent. I do remember I told Jett he was warned!!! LOL. I know talent when I see it and like the Scott County defensive player, I don't know his name but if you haven't seen him, you all better take a peek because he is the real deal. Kid Elam has 2 more years besides this year, He is only going to get better......

Yea I wasn't trying to take anything away from Combs. But the kid is a running back and always should have been. Hes got good vision and a very nice frame to make for both a shifty and power runner. I wouldn't even mind to see him on the other side of the ball. With his athleticism and no fear of shying away from contact I bet he'd be a heck of an outside LB.

I agree. Every team I see in the championship games at Kroger field have mulitple players playing on both sides of the ball. I think Cameron could lay the smack down as a defensive player as well. Corbin started that game last night without the West or Bolten in at the DTackles spots and it didn't take long to see them come in, especially with Birchfield running in the middle. But boy did it make a difference, defense was blitzing last night.

Corbin needs to cut down on their penalties going forward. They had drives stalled and extended Pikeville drives due to very ill-timed flags. Other than that, a good performance, just need to continue improving this year.

Man thats just ealy football.... lots of slop lol.....You are right though!

It was a great game, but at the end of the day one of those teams will win a state championship, and one of them won’t. I’ll let you all figure out which one is which.   Cool

You think Pikeville will be favored against Covington Catholic and LCA?  Plus they have Belfry and a very good Hazard team to deal with after already playing a very good Corbin team and like you said Madison Central also...that schedule is ridiculously tough for a 1A team but it will have them ready for 1A playoffs though no doubt.

Pikeville is gonna be good. One loss on the road at a place that is hard for any team to pull out a win doesn’t change much. Panthers were in a position to win in the end and just couldn’t get it done. Like every Pikeville team we have seen in the last 20 years just give them 5-6 weeks and all the pistons will be firing.

Sounds like Pikeville's gonna have to figure this QB thing out & do it fairly quick!! Don't get me wrong, I didn't have to put on my Colombo rain jacket to figure that out!! But it's clear, it will be a completely different season than the one everyone expected if they stick with the 2 man system!! Anyone know if that's the plan?! I'm sure Mac would rather have one guy running the whole show!! Listening on the radio it sounded like Pikeville ran the ball at will most of the 1st half. I didn't listen to the whole game, but it sounded like Corbin made the adjustments needed to come out with a win & Coach Mac stuck with both kids at QB. Would someone who watched live tell me how the Pikeville O-line looked, along with their defense?! Much appreciated!!

Pikeville has no worries. They played one of the best 4A teams last night on the road. They will be extremely tough at the end of the season after going through the gauntlet.

Over Covington Catholic? Yes. Covington Catholic is down this year. If Pikeville sticks to its ground game and avoids fumbles, I think that they will beat the Colonels.

I overlooked LCA on the schedule. I think Pikeville will be the underdog in that game but I won't be shocked if the Panthers beat LCA at home.

I got to get more infor on LCA...... Pikeville is trending up in a loss IMO...
#55
This sounded like a great game. Pikeville has the most brutal schedule I've ever seen a 1A team play. I think they have at least two more losses coming including next week against Cov Cath. None of that would be anything to hang your head about. They sound like a great team and should be fine and ready to make a run for another state title. Go Panthers!
#56
This is Big Boy Football Pikeville is trying to play. Corbin is flat out great competition for them win or lose. Pikeville still gets a ring this year.

Congratulations to Corbin first, now Pikeville has some issues to clean up. It will get straightened out I am sure. I did have the pleasure of meeting some of the bluegrass rival posters last night and it was great. PJDoug I mad at you and Bull for not inviting me over to have popcorn. Pikeville has more issues than one to work on but playing a good Corbin team will definitely show this coaching staff what they are. It’s a long season guys cool the jet’s down (you get that Jet-Pilot) Pikeville will be fine. Sure Pikeville could have won but the didn’t and no one play made them lose it’s a lot of missed assignments and other issues is why they lost and I am not disrespecting Corbin any any way because they are a good football team and showed Pikeville what they need to work on. But as always GO PANTHERS!!!
