Corbin 71 Clay Co. 45
#1
Final from Gilliam Gym in Corbin. Game was much more lopsided than the score indicates. Over from the get go.

It was 30 -11  ,    56- 22 .  Reserves mopped up late.  Felt sorry for the Clay kids. They continued to play hard.

It's not funny. Very sad.

It's disrespectful to a legend like Keith and a legendary program. The 13th region is better now because of how good Clay Co. was for so long. Teams had to get better or get squashed.

It’s embarrassing. A shame. Sexton has the worst sports programs in the history of clay county sports. Clay has become a joke of the 13th. Turned that way when they hired gray. Will never change until sexton is out. Sexton is a politician, not an educator or leader. And I’m still trying to figure out what gray is.

It makes me sad too. Clay County used to be such a proud program.

Gray or Sexton are going nowhere. What about the girls program? Bad shape too.

I'm an outsider and I don't pretend to know as much about Clay Co. sports as those who live around there. It sounds like there is a lot of politics in play at Clay(as there is in a lot of other places).  As far as in-game coaching goes, from what I've observed, Gray is a pretty good coach. He's beaten a lot of good coaches. I don't think coaching is the problem. Politics seems to be the problem and why Clay doesn't have the level of talent that we are used to.

Coach Keith gave us 13th region fans a lot of good basketball to watch over the years. My favorite teams to watch play were the Richie, Russ, and Russ teams. Just phenomenal. Those teams helped gain the 13th region a lot of respect. I'm thankful I got to watch those teams play.

One of my favorite games was at Corbin. People were lined up four deep on at the ends of the gym(I was one of them). It was Richie's junior or senior year. Clay was ranked near the top of the state polls(maybe AT the top). Corbin was really, really good, led by a transfer from Middleboro who was really good. Eddie Sutton was in the house to watch Richie, who lit Corbin up in the first half. Clay blitzed the Hounds in that first half and led by 30 at halftime. I thought they looked like one of the best HS teams I had ever seen play live.  Corbin made a furious second half comeback and cut the lead to 4, with the place going bonkers. Clay held on to win the game by around 10, I think. Great memories.   Ritchie has a connection to Corbin, btw. He was born in Corbin. Too bad he couldn't have played for us. lol

Outsider or insider how can you think Gray is a good coach???  Are you kidding me??  During his 6 years he has accomplished nothing......He has literally won 2 regional games and not in the same year.  2 years he didn't even get out of district to make it to region (which never happens at Clay Co)......He has had talent but they got worse under his coaching so you can't blame the kids.....He is hands down the worst coach in the history of our program.  Keith was a legend and his teams preformed every year.....Mike Jones at least had 1 regional tournament championship in his coaching days at Clay........Spurlock at least made it to region during his years and was a threat........Ivy Burchell can't be judged in his boys coaching days because he inherited a program that was down and didn't have time to build it up...Marcum was the best coach Clay has had besides Keith.  Marcum made it to the regional finals 5 our of 6 years and won it twice and Clay was competitive night in and night out with the best teams in the state. The political sheep can say all they want that Clay is the youngest team in the state and lost 100% of their scoring and that is why they are down this year.....and I will answer the same way everytime......a good coach builds a program....you don't put all your money into one group and neglect another and that has happened in the past 4-5 years under Gray and now you are reaping the benefits of that.  If you want to take it one step further if you are a good coach then guys will want to play for you.  Clay has had several kids leave and several sitting at the high school that could help but the team but have made it known they refuse to play for someone like Gray....and you know what I support their decision and courage to stand up for that.

I agree that results are what matter and results have not been good. Clay had only missed making region one time in something like 70 years from 1947 to 2017 and missed back-to-back in '18 and '19.  I'm not arguing results.  I am simply saying this--- I have watched a number of individual games where Gray has outcoached some really good coaches. I've watched games where he outcoached Sizemore at North Laurel and Pietrowski at Corbin. And those guys are really good. And I saw in last year's regional where he destroyed one of the best coaches in the 13th region, Jeff Davis, at South Laurel.

Now, are there some kids that don't want to play for him? I don't know. My guess is that their mommies nd daddies don't want their Jimmies or Johnnies to play for him. Richies' kids played for him and played very well. I'm just saying that in some of the games I have watched, Gray has demonstrated that he can coach. I think that politics and mommies nd daddies have contributed to the downfall of Clay County basketball. It doesn't all fall on Glenn Gray, in my opinion. But, again, I'm looking at it from someone on the outside just watching games.

If Exhibit A was Gray's dismantling of South Laurel in last season's regional, I'll list Exhibit B in defense of Gray's coaching. It was the 2019 Cumberland Falls Invitational . Gray's team came into the tourney, I believe,  as the defending champs(no small task right there). In 2019's semifinal they faced an incredibly talented Knoxville Catholic team that featured three D-I talents, one of them a 7-foot center. The same team had beaten Corbin by more than 30 points a few weeks earlier.  Clay was down by 10 or 11 points at the end of the third quarter but Gray made a defensive adjustment entering the fourth and Clay pitched a SHUTOUT in the fourth quarter, outscoring Catholic 11-0 to win by a point. Gray completely outcoached KCath's coach, who mysteriously left his seven footer on the bench in the quarter as his lead dwindled. The next night, Grays squad came out and gave #1 ranked John Hardin all they could handle in the finals.

Again, I'm not absolving Gray from the ultimate responsibility for Clay underperforming at times but I have seen enough of his games to know that he can coach the game of basketball.  He is listed, if I'm not mistaken, as one of the 50 greatest sports figures in the history of Clay County High School. I'm not sure who was responsible for compiling that list but there were some greats on the list.

Question, do they still have the talent like Coach Keith had? Just a outsider looking in no matter who the Coach is if you don't have the players X's and O's, don't mean jack. Example Scott County the year after Coach Hicks left they won the region(state tourny was canceled). Last year they had a losing record, and this year they are like 3-6, same Coaches that coached with Coach Hicks for years, but the talent is just not there anymore

No, they don't. Not by any stretch of the imagination of even the most ardent Tiger fan. They are extremely young right now but not a lot of demonstrable talent at this point. Some on here will want to blame Gray for that as well. Is he to blame? I don't know. I'd say a lot of people share in it.  Now, Clay did have some nice talent the past few years. Some were expecting them to win the region every year with that group but it didn't happen. I suspect the talent was a bit overrated by some Clay folks but they had some really nice players. I do think they underachieved a bit, especially missing the region two straight seasons. Being the head coach, Gray bears ultimate responsibility but its not JUST his fault. It's fallacious to say that he can't coach, though.

Yes Buffalo, the girls program is atrocious right now as well. I know they have a losing record for sure. As far as Clay being young this year, I'm pretty sure they have 2-3 sophomores that are 17 years old so maybe they start two freshman and three sophomores? How many years did the group that graduated last year start? 2-3 years straight for a few of them. Anyway, what will the excuse be next year? They won't be much better because they will play baseball, football, etc and won't improve much in basketball. Now, they might as well play the other sports because they aren't going to win with Gray there anyway so why concentrate on basketball, right? Back to the girls team, Burchell should have given it up 4-5 years ago. He doesn't even care anymore and it's evident by the product on the court. What happened to the Curry girl? Gray just doesn't know how to develop players and that's obvious. Did the chairman of the board have to give Gray the job because Gray wanted the job or just because the chairman didn't want Marcum to keep the job? Please don't bore me with the Marcum resigned nonsense because everyone is tired of hearing that as well as the other excuses. Just win baby...or get out(Gray, chairman of the board, and anyone else involved). People need to demonstrate in front of the Enterprise, the Board of Ed. and other places if necessary. Oh never mind...they might lose their job if they do that. LOL...sucks to have to bite your tongue all day every day I guess.

I think it goes without saying there are a lot of folks on here that really REALLY dislike Coach Gray. I'd like to hear from someone else besides myself who is totally objective on Gray. His detractors are clearly biased against him and maybe they have good reasons to not like him. I don't know. I just know what I've seen on the court in the games I watched Clay play over the past few years. I've seen that the man can outcoach good coaches and he always conducts himself with class and professionalism on the court. Now, is he a jerk who don't give a crap about the fallen program? I have no idea. I can only comment about what I've observed and from what I've observed, I think he is a good coach.  I'd like to hear from someone who has no bias for or against.

Old School Hound, if he could coach, he'd have a regional title by now.  At Clay, you are measured by regional titles.  Athletically, Clay has had as much talent the last 3 years as they've had in awhile.  They simply aren't getting it done under Gray.  With lesser talent and even less player development, he's sure not to get it done.  Yes, he conducts himself well and looks nice in his sweater vest, etc. but that's not the measure of success.

Gray did not wat to coach this year, but was talked into it because they claimed there was no one else interested, which I find hard to believe.

People who don’t like Gray aren’t biased, it’s hard to not like a guy with his ego. That’s why everyone around Clay sports have the same opinion of him, that he’s ruined the program. A couple year back the Manchester Enterprise put out a book of the top 50 sports figures in Clay, and since Gray owns the newspaper he put himself in it, when he hasn’t accomplished anything. Former players will tell you they don’t like him because practices are unorganized and pointless. They get treated like crap and basically bullied. But because he owns the newspaper and the chairman of the school board works for him, he’ll have the job as long as he wants. And he may have made those in-game adjustments because a certain assistant, who should’ve gotten Gray’s job, is no longer on the staff. Those same adjustments won’t be happening anymore. It’s a sad sight

The above poster said he didn't want the job this year. Does he want it or does he not want it?  If he didn't want it why does he still have it?  Will he still have it next year and still not want it? Will he want it next year but not have it?  Dammit, whose on first in Manchester? Sounds like an effed up mess!!!

Even Gray knows he can’t win but he’ll throws out cliches like “I love my team” in order to save face. It’s code words for don’t get mad cause we’re terrible. He thought he could coach just enough to win at least one regional title with the group that graduated last year but he couldn’t even get to the regional finals with them. He sucks and the kids have no faith in him nor does anyone else. He stayed this year so the chairman wouldn’t have to eat crow. The chairman thought Gray would win 1-2 regional titles over the last 3 years but the truth is the chairman don’t know Jack about basketball. As the old saying goes “ignorance is bliss”

I wonder if Richie Farmer or Shannon Hoskins has ever been approached about the Clay Co. job?  And, if not, why not?
#21
I will say this about the situation. Clay co. Boys basketball went under when they let marcum walk. Facts are facts. Stats don’t lie. I know Robert and I personally feel he is happy not coaching. With that said, gray has to go and someone needs to build it back like marcum did. We have some decent candidates in county. I think that’s the best route to take. Clay people has a passion for clay sports. That was the mistake when they hired sexton. He’s a Knox man, not a clay man. When people are in positions to better the school system or basketball team, people should leave them alone. When people are not qualified or doing the job for personal gain, then they should get them out. Unbelievable how far the program has fallen. Sad and the bottom line. You guys are idiots. By the way, we got a bonus coming teachers. A code for everyone to remember the election. That’s okay. I will take the money and vote against your people. Lol

When you compare Gray to people like Pietrowski or heck even Brad Sizemore you have no knowledge of anything about sports.  My teenage daughter can sit on Clay's bench and do just as good if not better than Gray has done in the past 5 years.  He literally had a team in his 3rd year that with any of the coaches you have named would have won a regional title and with a good draw...could have made a strong showing at state.  When Jacob Curry was a Senior there is no reason whatsoever that team doesn't win the region but we all know what happened.  The saddest thing about it is he will be the coach for as long as he wants it or as long as Sexton wants him to be.  He didn't want to coach this year but they had one person who was wanting it and "they" meaning the board begged him to come back because they didn't want to give it to the person wanting it.  Sexton and the board can build their football stadiums and fields and all that is good for the school and program but without a leader it means nothing.  I'm done commenting on these dumb posts about how Gray is a good coach because anyone with a brain knows better.

I'd love to hear from anyone that can be objective about the Clay County program and head man. I don't know Coach Gray. All I know is what I've seen when I've watched CC basketball games the past few years. Fact is, he demolished a good coach in Jeff Davis in last year's regional. Had an excellent defensive game plan and the kids executed it well. Pietrowski , a very good coach , hasn't beaten Davis in over three years. Gray has beaten Sizemore Pietrowski, and some other very good coaches. Look, I'm not saying Gray is the second coming of Messiah Mike Krzyzewski. I'm just saying it's fallacious to say that he can't coach any better than a teenage girl. That's just silly.

I just think there are some of Glenn's detractors that have some personal reasons for why they don't like him. At least some of the criticisms have the scent of some personal issues. Now, he may be a jerk. I don't know anything about him. All I know is what I've observed on the basketball court. He's no Hank Iba or John Wooden but the guy is not a bad coach, imo. What do some of you guys from outside of Clay County think? Do you think Gray is worse than a teenage girl would be or do you think he's a pretty good coach? I'd like hear at least a couple of objective opinions.

Old hound look at the results compared to clay county past. Clay is not a program that has ever been even close to the bottom of the region. He has won 2 region games in 6 years. And those wins were in separate years. I watched them play Jackson tonight. My goodness old hound. You starting to look kinda silly backing him. The program is done while he is there. When I say done I mean they will not compete for a district title or region title with him leading the team. I don’t see any scent of personal issues with these posts. I think a person can look at his record and compare it to the clay county standard and his grade would be an F. Just facts. Opinions are opinions. Facts are facts.

I just figured it out. Old hound. So you’re a Corbin fan. If I were you I would be backing him to. With him coaching clay you know Corbin won’t have any worries when they play clay as long as he is still coaching them. Lol. Very smart. I bet the whole region opponent fans love coach gray. I would to. Takes a strong storied program out of the big picture.

I have no idea. I can only comment about what I've observed and from what I've observed, I think he is a good coach.  I'd like to hear from someone who has no bias for or against.
Had Marcum been coaching the past four seasons with Robinson and Abner Clay County would have two Region Championships in past four seasons.

Finally found the score. Jackson won.

Clay was up 29-26 at the half. Clay gets outscored 41-24 the 2nd half and loses 67-53 at home. The only set play I saw Clay try to run was an out of bounds play. Nothing against the kids but it was an awful display of basketball. Gray tried to play man D most of the game and it was a terrible move. Clay was poor in every aspect of the game. What would be a good estimate of Jackson County’s regional ranking? Clay girls also lost 69-25. The Clay fans filed out in masses with about 3 minutes left in the game. When is enough enough??#runitintotheground
