For me it is more than just a numbers thing. Character, mentorship and so many many other things matter to me.

I will reserve my vote until I learn more about Howard.

I think if we are talking about great eastern Kentucky coaches Jim Matney has to be mentioned.

Someone in another thread asked what Haywood, Hilton, Holcomb, and Howard's records were head to head.  I threw in Matney.  It's an open thread so people can add any coach that they want.  Personally, I knew Jack Hall and talked to him a few times because my brother had played for him, but he left Betsy Layne my 8th grade year so I never played for him.  I did play against one of his teams.  I am aware that he won a title at Elkhorn City, and that he was a great coach.

Holcomb also had a win over Haywood in 1997 41-6 seems like was the score. It was 1st game of season in the Honey Bowl at Breathitt.
I remember I was on that team.

That would make Holcomb vs Haywood 9-9

Haywood is the goat, y'all. I don't have time this morning to compile it, but I think if you put district/region/state championship stats up side by side for each of these coaches then Haywoods are gonna be staggeringly more impressive than the other great coaches.
#13
The thread wasn’t meant to leave anyone out. I was just thinking about these guys and three of them are still active in this year’s playoffs. Hillard came to mind, because he was a good friend to Holcomb back in Breathitt’s power run days; before Mike Whitaker broke the lid off Eastern Ky football.

I may have played against Jack Hall when he was at Fleming Neon late in his career. Side saddle wing t; right???

Haywood!

Wins, character, reputation. All great coaches but not close IMO!

Not to take anything away from Haywood but he should have more he's been at Belfry for what close to 50 years.

Haywood really may end his career with 500 wins which has only been done 3 other times. He began this season with 457 wins and Belfry has won 6 games this season which would put him at 463 right now and I hear he really wants to coach this middle school team who just won their 2nd consecutive state championship until they graduate.

His first year at Belfry was 1984. This is his 37th year at Belfry. He spent 8 years at Prestonsburg before coming to Belfry.

Kinda backfired on me. Jack Hall didn't have very many games against these other legends in EKY history. With the data I do have I will try to compile a list:

Hall (1) vs Haywood (1)
79            80

Hall (1) vs Howard (9)
81            78,79,80,82,83,84,85,86,88,89

Hall (0) vs Holcomb (2)
                89,90

Hall (0) vs Hilton (1)
                85

Hall (1) vs Matney (1)
85            86

Obviously not staggering numbers, however by the time Hall played another on this list, he had already coached 20 seasons and won the 1964 1A state championship. Hall would finish his career with a 205-121-5 record spanning from 1957 to 1993 at Fleming Neon, Elkhorn City, Madison, Kings Mill (OH), and Betsy Layne.

Got to give Jack Hall and Elkhorn credit. First to win a championship in Pike Co. Wonder if he used the side saddle formation at that time ?

I know Bourbon was awful when he took over. He brought a state tile there in no time in1997 Before all this he was really instrumental in building Breathitt Co up from nothing when their program was just getting  started in the mid 70s.

Just think where his win totals would be if he had stayed at Bell Co I steak of leaving for Bourbon. He had Bell rolling in the mid 90s.

If he stayed at Bell from 1983 (the year he left Breathitt for Bell) until now he would be way ahead of Haywood or anyone else. He could possibly even be over 500 wins.

Jack Hall exclusively ran the Side Saddle T his entire career. There was an article published in the Louisville Courier Journal asking if he would ever run an updated offense, and he replied that he would rather retire.

Who was Holcomb's mentor? Did he coach somewhere else before being head coach at Breathitt County?

Seems like Bell and Bourbon were both bad when Hilton took over.
I know Bourbon was awful when he took over. He brought a state tile there in no time in1997 Before all this he was really instrumental in building Breathitt Co up from nothing when their program was just getting  started in the mid 70s.

Just think where his win totals would be if he had stayed at Bell Co instead of leaving for Bourbon. He had Bell rolling in the mid 90s. Also when he left for UPike  he was coming off a state title just a year or two before.

If he stayed at Bell from 1983 (the year he left Breathitt for Bell) until now he would be way ahead of Haywood or anyone else. He could possibly even be over 500 wins.
I had forgot about Hilton being at Breathitt County. That's been a while ago Smile

I was there too, watching a relative on the Belfry team.  If I’m not mistaken that Breathitt team won 42 consecutive games and were upset in the playoffs by Lawrence Co? Maybe??

He played in Nelson Co in high school and of I am not mistaken his 1st job was at Madison Central as a volunteer assistant. Something a lot of people probably don't know about him was after Breathitt Co basketball coach "stepped down" he took over the basketball team. Lets just say he is a much better football coach than basketball.

Breathitt got beat in the region final at Lawrence that year on a cold and muddy night. We were the better team but it was just their night. The mud slowed down our pass heave offense plus Lawrence was hitting on all cylinders even hitting a long TD on a hook and lateral. After the game the Lawrence Co fans tore down the goal post and packed them down to where we were huddled trying to comprehend what happened. Needless to say a huge fight broke out with at least one stabbing. That was a long rode back to Jackson that night.

Lawrence went on to lose the next week to an underdog Bourbon Co team who was the #4 seed in their district. Bourbon is coach was Dudley Hilton who went on to win 2a that year.

That ended the 42 game win streak. Ad you probably tell that one still hurts.

Probably the only guy that can say so.

That almost mirrors what happened to Danville in 1993 when they lost to Prestonsburg on a cold, muddy night ending their 42 game winning streak.  Danville did lose at home though.  The mud neutralized their speed as well.  IMO opinion, on a dry field, Danville would have won that game.  Anyway, Prestonsburg lost the next week in the finals against Mayfield.  That's one of the reasons I miss natural grass fields.  They were a wild card that gave underdogs a fighting chance especially this time of year.
