Solid!!!!!!!
FYI Richie Blackburn was actually the first Pirate I know of to receive a KY vs TN invite but did not play due to an injury to his knee.

Richie was the real deal! Not sure Tim Couch got hit like that until he went to Cleveland.
Imagine him playing today with the evolution of Belfry's strength and conditioning program.

Very nice, solid work as always my friend. Alot of tradition there. Makes one wonder how it took Belfry so long to win their first state championship with all those great players that's played on Pond Creek over the years.

1965, 1979, & 1990 all stand out.
In all those seasons Belfry had undefeated regular seasons and finished ranked in the Top 20 of the Lit Ratings (have not found 65 yet).
Those were some excellent teams with excellent players that just ran into the wrong team in a playoff system that was simply harder to win in. 1979 it was the State Finals before they lost obviously. 1990 it was just that Ashland team of legend.

Harold played for Coach Vipperman and graduated in 1969.

I could not find any AP All-State info during that time but he made the 1968 CJ All-State Honorable Mention.
He went on to be a very good player at EKU playign QB. Rick Blackburn also played at EKU with Borders (End), Blackburn was two years behind him.
Here is an article on Borders from when he led EKU to a victory of East Tennessee. He earned the nickname "Quick Harold".

Side note.. if anyone has a family member they are sure I missed somewhere, if you give me the exact name and years he was at Belfry it makes it a lot easier to search.
I literally looked through thousands of names in blurred print so the odds are good I missed a name or two despite my best efforts.

A few names of Belfry players to go on an play College Football:
C Lawson King- University of Kentucky back in the 50's ('52 or '53). He also made the East-West All-Star team.
OL Irvin Wilson and OL Cullen Wilson. Irvin played at Marshall and coached Belfry in the 50's. Cullen Wilson would go on to play T for UK.
Paul Hampton ('65) was an East-West All-Star and went on to play at EKU.
Tom Taylor ('82) went on to play at Morehead State.
Anyone have any stories or accounts of Benny Allen?
Was an All-Stater on the 79' Runner-Up team. Went on to be named to the East-West All-Star Game and signed to play at EKU.

Flem Bodad Varney played at Marshall
I also thought that Gene Phillips made All-State in the 60's. He also played at Marshall.
James Ramey played at UK and was drafted by Cleveland.

- The 2016 Belfry team had the most impressive resume of an Eastern Kentucky team in the modern era according to the Courier-Journal Lit Rating (** 2019 Johnson Central withheld as the Lit Ratings were no longer published**).
That 2016 team spent three weeks ranked as the #2 overall team in Kentucky behind Trinity. They were the #1 ranked small school in Kentucky every week and finished ranked as the #4 overall team. The 127.6 Final Rating is the highest in EKY history. The only EKY team in the modern era to finish the regular season with higher overall State Ranking was Breathitt County in 1997, the Bobcats though failed to go on to win a State Title after finishing the regular season as the #3 overall team in Kentucky.

There were 19 different Individual Players to make 1st Team All-State. Cole Bentley, Austin Dotson, and Ray Horton would make 1st team All-State in Successive Years.

I created an account just to post on this, because I wanted to share something about Coach Haywood. I will give away my identity here, but I wrote for several years in the area, Williamson Daily and News-Express and now I pastor at Pinsonfork Church of God, in Belfry. On Monday, we did a sit down with Coach Haywood, where him and I just talked on live-stream. Sadly, we had some issues with our livestream and it wasn't very clear (the only issue we've had and we are doing a major upgrade to that). You can find and hear some of it on our FB page. But I wanted to share with you some things Coach Haywood said and some interesting points made, that I feel speaks to this thread!
First: He does feel they will be football this year just not sure when. Also, confirmed they are just nine games as of now, had a team from New Jersey coming but they aren't going to come due to everything going on and it is difficult to schedule anything right now.
Belfry
He spoke a lot about the community and the crowd support. He highlighted a couple of games as moments where Belfry fans showed how special they are. First, was the 2003 Region Finals at Middlesboro (one of the best crowds I've seen at a game) and this years game at DeSales.
Adversity
We talked a lot about overcoming obstacles and adversity. We talked about how Belfry went to state back-to-back shortly after he arrived and didn't go back until 2003. He said that it was frustrating because they had some really good teams but just could not get over that hump.
He talked about the moment in 2003 when they won the title, he said he couldn't describe what was going through his mind but thanks about it often. He said he was thinking, we finally did it. He also noted that the failures and falling short allowed him, the staff and community to appreciate the success that much more.
He also spoke about his second year of coaching at Prestonsburg about the young man being paralyzed and how that really shaped him, his faith and who he was as a coach. A very heart-felt moment of the talk!
Leadership
I love learning from leaders and we talked a ton about that and it is easy to see why Belfry is successful. I've set in on coaches meetings before and I can tell you his meetings is like no other.
He talked a ton about three things: Excellence, Mentorship and doing the little things well.
He said that what divides good players from great players and good teams from great teams is doing the little things well. He said he always focuses on the little things, the small details and his staff also does.
As far as excellence those, he said that he wants the program to be ran with excellence; everything about it.
And he talked about the value of reaching out to mentors. He said most of his mentors are already passed but he still has people he goes to for advice and for guidance and that any leader needs that. He also talked about how they push the older kids to reach out and be that to the younger kids, noted that the younger ones come in looking at the older ones like a hero.
One more side note: He started coaching at the age of 13, coaching baseball and has been coaching since then! That is a fact about Coach Haywood that I never knew!

Great stuff!
I have been working diligently whenever I have free time at researching and trying to document as much Belfry History as I can. My goal is to put it into a format over the next year where it can be accessed by anyone free of charge.
Full disclosure, I have a nephew who will be in High School soon in GA and have two babies under 2. My father's health is also becoming an issue and I can see him leaving the area and with it most of my ties. My days of following Belfry closely are probably coming to a close so I want to leave a bit of a resource for fans to always enjoy.
As technology changes even these message boards will be a thing of the past. For as much joy as the Belfry program has brought to an area of Appalachia that has needed it through the years, I hope this just builds to the Pond Creek legacy.
On a side note I want to challenge anyone reading this that has the means to add to history to do so. If you have old game films try to get them uploaded to Youtube.
I have created a playlist in a semi-chronological order and will continue to add to it as I find more.
