Are schools complying with holdback rules set by KHSAA

There was nothing wrong with it back then imo but most kids where light years more mature than kids today imo...

I don’t know if I’d necessarily call it bad parenting...but the things I was expected to do as chores when I was 10 / 11 years old would probably see most parents put in jail today...I could and did drive a tractor over most of Whitley Co...and most of the time it had something to do with tobacco, corn, or hay being towed behind it...

I know a lot of people that wish they had held back. I dont know any who regret holding back. The state dont like it because it costs them more money.

Granny Bear Wrote:I never did like holding kids back to play sports, and every single one of my grandsons were held back!!! Looking back on it now, it was a good thing for them PERSONALLY. The extra level of maturity made a huge difference and I'm glad that they were held back now. I graduated at 17 too pj. It's a special group, isn't it!!! Confusednicker:

The extreme in this hold back mentality happens when mom and dad think little Johnny is going to be the next super star. I know one young man who drove to basketball practice when he was in middle school. He drove a Porche. Follow the thinking there!!!

We're special for sure.

I don’t know any that has held back for whatever reason, that has regretted it. Most people who complain about hold backs don’t know many that have done so. I think most parents don’t hold kids back because they want them to graduate as soon as possible. That’s why they start them in school so early too

Cant start them early anymore thanks to the state.

KHSAA rules are not used in WKY anymore we abolished them. They are just there as suggestions anyway. EKY may have done away with them this year as well. The first indication they had done away with them were the football results this year

Little does he know, he won’t have the advantage of driving himself or his brother or sister to school in a PORCHE! Hah

If I had a Porsche, I wouldn’t have played sports to many other activities to get into, just kidding Granny. Plus I don’t really know if they made them when I graduated according to Bob Seger, calling me old.

Holding kids back has been going on for a long time. I graduated in 2008 from PHS and we had some kids that were held back that I graduated with. I don't have a problem with it, the only advantages I really see are at the grade school and middle school levels. Once all these kids are 17-19 years old it all kind of evens back out.

I agree 100% BlackcatAlum. There's a slight advantage at the grade school level and an even slighter one at the Middle School level, in my opinion. But once you get to high school I don't see an advantage whatsoever. For one, 80% or more of the starters are juniors and seniors. Another is that what freshman and sophomores that do start usually make up for the little difference there is in age with their athletic ability or they wouldn't be starting.

People that do have a problem with hold backs are just using it as somewhat of an excuse, I'll be honest.

Here's an example. Say there were no hold backs. Everybody on the field are in the grade they should be in. You still have starting freshman and sophomores out there going up against seniors on the opposing teams that's 2 plus years older. Do some of you that have a problem with hold backs have a problem with this as well? I mean what's the difference?

Fact of the matter is there is no difference. Just something to complain about. And here is why I think people complain about it. You take programs like Belfry and Johnson Central, I'll use them because that's who this guy that started the thread is talking about. They want to blame their success on illegal players. They get tired, year in and year out, of taking the losses to these type programs and have no other answer other than they have to be cheating or playing kids old enough to buy alcohol. When the answer is simple.

These programs start grooming their players at a very young age. Preparing them on how the high school team does it long before they get there. It's not a 10-12 month age advantage. It's the system. The programs with winning traditions have a very successful feeder program.

Belfry football players don't start learning how Coach Heywood wants things done their Freshman year. Coach Danny Oliver has already implemented the system into these kids in the 7th and 8th grade before they even get to high school. By the time Coach Heywood gets these kids, they already know his playbook and system, he just has to trim off the rough edges. This is why these programs are successful. Not because a couple kids are a few months older than some of the others. Like I said, in my opinion, there is no advantage only excuses. You dont ever here winning programs parents complaining when their kid, that wasn't held back, is out there going up against kids that was held back do you? There's a reason. It's because they play in a system that has taught them how to go out and play against athletes that are bigger and older than they are. It's taught them how to win. And it's also taught them that when you do lose, it's not because the guy across from you is older, it's because he was better. It also teaches them to not make excuses. Be honest, 99% of the crying is coming from Mommy and Daddy's not the players anyway. Lol! Some of you parents need to stop making excuses for your kids, your only hurting them.

Yep, this everyone gets a trophy epidemic is destroying kids...I never could make the basketball team in middle school and the ole man didn’t pamper me, asked me what I expected, the coach wasn’t blind that I was about as athletic as a cow on ice...:Sad04:

I do have a question, have any of you posters seen the 606 invades Kroger field? I believe it was done by WYMT but I have seen on Twitter everyone talking about it but I can’t find it. So if any of you posters watch it tell me where to find it. #55 PirateFan actually we rode horses and buggies in my day no model A’s for this old cat. Same here buddy. I was raised in the 80's and graduated in the early 90's. My dad would have tanned my hide if I came home talking some of the nonsense these kids are "taught" today with my feelings all hurt. He would have took me to my "safe space" alright, right out by the shed with a switch! And he definitely wouldn't be going to school looking for my 5th place trophy like alot of kids think they deserve today because that's what parents are teaching them. Alot of the parents are the ones that need to grow up.

I've never seen such a time. This world is going straight to hell and not many seem to be noticing it. Like I said, it's more the parents than it is the kids. All (most) parents are worried about today is making sure little Johnny or little Susie's name makes the paper or did better than the neighbors kids down the street did. They dont care whether they deserved it or not. I've never seen so much disrespect teenagers have this day and time towards adults. And it's got alot to do with grown parents being afraid of their heathen teenagers!

I know my posts are long on this thread but this kinda stuff just turns my stomach! And yeah, I'll go ahead and say it, alot of people are raising nothing more than snot nose, spoiled, and ungrateful little brats. And you can tell who they are too when you see them out in public. Pitiful! I may get booted for a week or two for saying that but it'll be worth it.

Hickory tea builds character. My mom used to send me for a switch and I'd bring a tree back to get her laughing in hopes she would take it easy on me, because I knew if I brought a small one back she would break it over and send me for another. lol. I was no all star but no wimp either. I can take a beating and keep coming back time after time after time. lol

And some, I should say a lot are 20 when they graduate in May

You are all here saying "Report it to KHSAA" LMAO! KHSAA has turned their back on numerous violation in the past and is currently. Take example of Frederick Douglass University. How do they get away for 3 years and more to come... "out of district and out of county kids" are allowed to play ASAP. Not to mentioned able to reside at the dorms. Oopps sorry I meant the apartments adjacent to the school.

FBfan4life Wrote:And some, I should say a lot are 20 when they graduate in May

No high school athlete could be 20 when they graduate and be eligible as a senior - not unless graduation is in August.

The cut off is turning 19 before August1 senior year, how could they be 20 in May?

Wanna bet? Some district i know, if you're categorized as "special education" you can be enrolled till they are 21. Not every student/ athletes are graduating at 21 of course not, but i have seen several play fall sports athletes 18-19 and graduating in May as 19-20.
