As most of you probably know by now I love data and stats. I have been working on a database (so far it reaches back to 1944) of as much historical data as I can compile. Over the past few weeks, I posted some snapshots and some attempts at ratings. This week I am just going to post some interest tidbits about KY High School football from 1975-2019. I chose this time frame because 1975 was the year the KHSAA stopped using the Dickenson rating system to choose playoff teams.
Some notes:
- All data has been pulled from the LJC newspaper. While I tried to pull the latest possible posting of the Standings each year there were some years that a handful of teams a game left. This is data I hope to clear up over time but minimally impacts this post.
- Direct transitions kept the previous schools' records (I may have missed some of these). For example, Martin Co and Sheldon Clark are considered the same school in the data set. Holy Cross (Lou) retains all of Bishop Davids's records.
- Consolidations are considered new schools, even Mercer Co.
- For sake of District Titles, I considered finishing 1st in your district or sub-district a title.
- Region Championships mean true region championships or a semi-final appearance.
- Some schools from the mid-70s - Mid 80s in the highest class may have a title attributed to them that isn't in the KHSAA records. I am working to clean up the data set to deal with Jefferson County and the rest of the state crap that is in that time frame.
- Same is true for Runners Up.
- 2019 is not considered in the data set because the season is still in progress.

Boyle Co is only on the list for state titles...the definition of efficiency.

To me thatâs odd when they have won that many championships and not in the top of the rest. You are probably right very efficient.

Boyle falls into the 10-20 range in most of the categories.

When you go 8-1 in title games, it helps. 😉

quick question... does anyone know why Mayfield would only have a possible 170 district games, while Trinity and others have 200+

Probably depends on how many teams are in your district.

Districts in the 75-84 range were a mess, trinity played a lot more district games because of the whole Jefferson County split. I’ll get some exact details in a bit
11-16-2019, 07:34 PM
So from 1975 - 2018 District Records were
Trintity 221-19
Mayfield 163-7
From 1977-1986 Trinity played pretty much double the district games as Mayfield. In an 11 games season, Trinity would play 9 district games.
Trinity averaged 5.5 District Games a year
Mayfield averaged 3.8

That 1982 CKC Title still stings this old Briar Jumper. That one cost Somerset a state championship.

The Jumpers should have been State Champs that year. Boyle just big played them that night.
