No more holdbacks
#1
The Pike Co. BOE passed a policy that states any child being held back after 5th grade is not eligible to play in the Pike County Tourney. The vote went 4-1 with the only no vote being from the Belfry BOE member. This comes after the Kentucky State BOE passes a law that moves back the 19 yr old birthdate to July from Aug.

IMHO this was passed just to keep Belfry Middle from holding kids back, plain and simple.

Well... in that case.. won't that include ALL Pike Co. Schools?? Including the ones that were listed as having many holdbacks?? What is fair to one is fair to them all... I know school that REFUSE to holdback because of the testing and other things.
#3
Yes, it includes all schools.

But those schools did it, so all should have a chance to do it, this rule is a shot at Virgie and Belfry, plain and simple and it sucks.

I suppose your from Phelps.

I honestly didn't know that Belfry had any holdbacks!!!! LOL.... I did know that Virgie had some but have no idea of how many!!! When did this vote take place?? It was sure a new one on me!!!!
#5
Belfry has 0 holdbacks, but some of the smaller kids were getting held back for a chance to grow, we are talking kids 5'5" and under. Now that don't have that chance.....or do they.

It took place tonight, brought up by the Phelps BOE member.

This is pretty stupid IMHO, look at the past 5-6 15th region champs, all had holdbacks. They just handicapped Pike County in the region tourney.....thanks.

What does the 19 yo birthdate change mean?
#7
That's pathetic. Certain kids need to be held back in middle school, so now they can't play sports because of it?

The KHSAA rule USED to read if you turn 19 before Aug 1st of your SR., you were ineligible to play your SR. year. Now it is July 1st.

This rule is going to throw a "monkey wrench" into the sports programs in Pike County. Can just hear the arguments from parents. Could get nasty.
#10
What about those student athletes that have already been held back?..Say that I held back my child last year as a 6 or 7 th are previous holdbacks exempt??

That can be a whole other can of worms...

they need to be more flexible.

Schools could also choose not to play in the Pike County Tourney......and maybe just play in the KBA, BCI, and Mountain Middle School Conference tourney.

What do you mean?

If they dont make the grades in school, they dont need to play sports. Education comes before extra curricular activites.

Nice post

I think this is a good thing. Kids should not be held back just to play sports. I just wonder how many kids the schools that normally hold them back year after year will be holding them back now. The only think I think they should change is where they cant play in the county tourney. I think if a kid is held back, then the second year of the same grade they should not be allowed to play at all.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

When did they pass that? I haven't seen or heard that anywhere. KHSAA website still says August 1.

Bad rule!
#20
I agree with it. Some schools OVERuse the holdback rule and some schools don't use it at all. Give all a fair playing field.

#21
If everyone has the chance to hold back has is that not fair for everyone? Because some choose not to hold back doesn't mean it's unfair for others to do it.
#22
The more I think about it this, the dumber it is.

Every other county can do this, but Pike Co. can not?Rolleyes

Not fair to the kids or the parents who would like to keep their children out of the cruel world for another year.
#23
Whatever rule they pass won't matter, Parents will just hold there kids back in 5th grade.
If they change the rule next year to 3rd grade, Parents will be holding back 2nd graders and so on.....Many parents have already been holding their children back before even allowing them to start by sending them to kindergarten as 6 year olds instead of five year olds.
