Good job Noah Back and Cory Hoskins. Proud of you guys.

Noah is no surprise but Corey Hoskins has def shocked me. No way do I think he is better than Al, BB or John Noble. His team doesn't have a chance against Perry Central in District, meaning they won't make it out of the District tournament. I think that itself speaks alot about the coach. I personally thought John Noble should have gotten it.

Hoskins has done a great job , at a small school .
02-12-2019, 05:52 AM
Congratulations to both! Back kid is a heck of a 3 point shooter, leading the state in percentage..and Hoskins has done an excellent job at a small school with limited students that can play, you can be a great coach and not have the best team..I honestly believe that, and, you can have a great team with a load of talent and be a horrible coach..just my opinion

I say everybody needs to play terrible teams and get wins. Most of every teams schedules should be sub .500 teams and your coach will win the coach of the year. They are 3 or 4 more deserving coaches who have actually beat good teams.

Buckhorn beat Hazard like over the weekend lol.

Congrats to Coach Hoskins and Noah Back! Well deserved.

Buckhorn schedule is terrible. The only good win they have is against hazard and they needed help. Perry knott hazard and breathitt could be a one or two loss team with that record

I think they are both the correct choices. Same thing on the girls side of things. Hoskins has done well at a small school and Back is a baller.

Very good choice for COTY. Corey is a great guy and works hard at what he does. This award is not all about records, it's about getting the most out of what you have to work with. What Coach couldn't do a great job with better players? All of these other guys you are listing has some of the top players in the region and it's very easy to throw out a ball and get wins with the best players, Buckhorn doesn't have any of those but they still were able to get 20 wins. That is a big accomplishment for such a small school. This is because of the job that Coach Hoskins has done with his group of athletes. This is the reason he was chosen for this award. CONGRATS TO COACH COREY HOSKINS!

Very valid points. I agree that any coach who wins with the players he or she has without having to recruit them or have the family âmoveâ for different reasons to play at that school should always be selected for coach of the year. Lots of the coaches mentioned with the exception of Hoskins and Coach Lee went out and got their players. Itâs the same with player of the year. Itâs all about points. I think people should consider all aspects of the game. Can they play defense, handle the ball, rebound, pass and make the players around them better? Itâs nothing but a popularity contest and who can get 20-30 per game regardless if they can do anything else on the floor.

I tried to make that argument when Damon Tobler, who went from playing center to point guard, didn't get player of the year and the folks over in Letcher County were awfully silent about that.
Scored, shot 60+% from the field, rebounded, defended, big-time shot blocker, distributed the ball... four-year player at Perry and he comes back to as many games each year as any former player.

Terrell could do more than score also. He more than deserved to be player of the year that season. Plus he WAS from Eastern Kentucky and didnât relocate here and then go âhomeâ every summer. Terrell could play all aspects of the game, just look at his success at Berea on the college level.

When did that become a requirement for being POY?

Itâs not a requirement but it also isnât fair to the local kids that are talented enough to win the award when a kid is brought into a program from somewhere else. Tobler was a great player yes but he was no more deserving of the award than Terrell that season.

Both awards are a popularity contest PERIOD! Noah is a great player and Hoskins has done a great job at Buckhorn. But when you have coaches win state titles and players playing D-1 basketball at a high level that didnât win the award or even make pre-season 10 team players because the people who vote in these awards donât like them!

He made my point for me.
The argument of this being a popularity contest is only valid for folks when it's convenient.

Been in this business a long time....I have seen it first hand....Coaches campaign for votes and get together to vote for certain people or not for another....letâs take care of this one or that one.....got nothing to do with being convenient! If your not a member of the good olâ boys club...you donât stand a chance!

I don't disagree that folks politic for votes.
I'm just poking at our buddy Stidham because he didn't have a problem with it when a Letcher boy won it.

Just curious, who are you talking about? Which coach in the 14th has won a state title?
02-15-2019, 09:24 PM
Emmanuel Owootaoh and Christian Cunningham from the players stand point.....Kevin Spurlock and Rodrick Rhodes won state titles and neither won Coach of the Year in the 14th

Thatâs because that Letcher boy earned and deserved it. Like it or not that Letcher boy was and still is talented. I think thatâs what hurt everyone so bad is that a Letcher boy did win because of the hatred and biased opinions about LCC.
