WKYT story on referees
#1
Has anyone watched this yet? I've been all over the state at basketball games and I honestly believe that since they switched to 3 referees it gotten worse. The 13th,12th,and 14th region have the worst refereeing in both boys and girls. They are taking away from the game. If you drive the lane and get bumped or smacked then dammit it's a foul. They are going to get kids hurt. Terrible calls. I wish the majority of referees in the 12th,13th, and 14th would quit and get a new crew in. Why doesn't the KHSAA take over the referees and make it a full time job. Evaluate them to decide if they can do the "Big " games. If they don't have a satisfactory evaluation, then they get written up like any other job. If they are terrible, fire them. Appoint a referee commissioner type job and have them watch film of the referees and evaluate them. But also have someone evaluate the evaluater. Get rid of the cocky smart ass refereeing that is destroying the game. No wonder parents get upset when blatant fouls are missed or God forbid their child gets hurt because a referee lets the game get out of hand. Heck, fine the refs for terrible calls. Maybe it will get rid of the terrible job they are doing and get rid of the "Homers" that ruin the integrity of the game. Thoughts????

I’m all about holding the referees accountable. However, there is a major shortage of refs and very few young people are getting into the business. Schools could not afford to pay these guys the money that would be needed to make these full time jobs. In a perfect world u have a nice plan.

Who’s going to pay for full time refs?

I agree, officiating is very spotty anymore. Most of time I feel like big games are decided by officiating. I'm alright if they miss 6-8 a game, but once you get into 15-25+ it becomes ridiculous. Especially, when it's one-sided. However, there's no way you could make high school officiating a full time job. I have a better idea though, make the right calls. In the 14th Region especially. I agree man, when you drive in the lane and there's contact it's a foul. Also, there are several times when the defense can play great d and get called for a foul... You see that at a lot of levels.

In the past week, I've seen two players get violently pushed in the back, one into a set of metal bars, without anything getting called and later in the game, a player getting T'd up for cheap Tsater on. Once while walking to his bench after getting his 5th foul with his back to the official... Unless he said something, I don't know but he was walking away from the official the official followed him to the bench and then gave him the T. He was walking calmly didn't overreact or anything.

I do wish that they T'd players that over reacted to calls like they just got shot in the kneecap or found their dog got ranover by a bus. If I was a ref, I'll give you the initial reaction but after that, T them up. It's bad for the sport and annoying to watch. Now, sometimes they miss calls... But, on the common fouls, let it go bro. The Powell County girls team are terrible with this. With every call, they put on a show for 5 seconds and it doesn't seem genuine... I guess because, to me, that's immature. One is really bad at it.

And I can get mad at officiating as much as anyone or more probably more. But, it seems like I see a poorly officiated game at least once a week and seemingly every big game is... But when you think about it, it's hard to find 500 good or competent officials for a state. There are some officials that I think are really good. I think Keith Hall, Anythony Molihan, and Benny Campbell are as good as they come.

I know some people who can watch a game and afterwards critique each ref call by call... I can't do that, but I know when as a whole a game has been poorly officiated. You are right, in the 14th Region it's super physical anymore. To a fault, in most cases. In the Estill v Powell girls game, one of Powell players ran 5 feet an elbowed an Estill player in the face and it didn't get called, not a personal or anything. That's someone's kid out there... Unexcusable.

One of the funniest things I've seen in a while was the other day when a point guard pushed off at half court and the defender got called with a block. It was a terrible call... Well, once they checked it back in, the defender put his hands behind his back and held them together for a couple seconds. It was abesoulety the funniest thing I've ever seen... I've never seen a player "get the best" of an official like that, but boy it was hilarious. The defensive player got subbed out on the next dead ball, but I loved it. lol.

It definitely needs to be improved... It feels like I see 10-15 games a year where there were 20-25+ missed calls and that just can't happen. The problem is if I was in charge I'd probably fire half the bunch in a year... And they are in need of numbers. There have been several games where I've left saying that crew needs to be canned... I don't want to be misquoted here though, I don't hate refs, I'm not trying to blast them... But, when each ref misses 10 calls in a District Championship game there is no excuses. Especially, when they're mainly one-sided mistakes. I actually love the ones that are good. But in turn I dislike the ones that are bad. Poor officiating is becoming more and more common at all levels. I don't see it improving any time soon, but hopefully it will.

Nothing personal at all. Honestly, I don't even know more than 10 refs by name or face.

There are some here in Perry County that are absolutely horrible. Change the whole outcome of games. Calls are one sided. Make you change your whole style of play. Some dont even know basketball is a contact sport.

The KHSAA. Or some of the lottery $$$. How much does the KHSAA need to make?

Clay County played the whole first half last night without having 1 single foul called on them, i think that’s the only time i ever seen a whole half of basketball where A team committed 0 fouls

Just wondering if anyone knows what it pays

Dont think any of us are needing the job Zag. We just looking for someone that doesn't play favoritism to their local buddies or cousins.

45/game for HS I believe.

I hear you, Rock.
But you never know...
The next decent ref in your region could be reading that post right now and sign up.

I think most of the refs around here try to do well but no one gets it right every time. I think KHSAA's letter holds some merit. I know the rules and I reffed for a few years, but it just wasn't worth the money.

You can work a biddy league and have parents on both sides wanting to fight you after the game. Probably didn't help that I wasn't very good... but every time you blow the whistle someone is mad. Every time you don't blow the whistle someone is mad.

Your right Zag. I agree

At the same time, I think some recruiting and mentoring could be really helpful for the product being put out.

You typically see the vets on the big games with the new guys working JV or smaller games.

Maybe if the assigners tried to work in some older guys in these crews with the newbies and vice-versa. I know the assigners have a lot to consider, but coming from a ref who didn't last very long, that would have helped me. When I reffed high school I was typically with crews of people who really couldn't teach me anything because we were all learning "sink-or-swim" style. Someone in there to give me pointers as the game goes on would have been helpful.

high school refs get paid about 75 a game. Most refs will do a JV and varsity game each nite plus they get 45 cents a mile travel expense. So that’s around 150-175 a nite usually. This ain’t where refs make there money though. Summer games it’s well known that a ref may get 500 bucks to do a few games during the day but this money is always meant to return the favor during regular season. Been going on forever

$45 per game
more for postseason
You get 20 bucks for driving more than 100 miles (postseason only)
https://khsaa.org/officials/20162017/officialsfees.pdf

Where did you get that info from?

The link I posted was from a few years ago, but the pay rate is still the same but postseason is up a bit

You can see the new guidebook here https://khsaa.org/Publications/officials...debook.pdf

Pay rate is on page 5

Ok here is the issue.
1) you must not get off the mountains. I’ve see games all around the state and it’s very close on talent.
2) you must have a child/coach/favorite team not as good as you think and therefore getting thumped and need someone to blame.
3) pay varies from 60-80 dollars a game across the state. WTH that said I know officials all across the the state (including Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana and Missouri) and all do this for a HOBBY!!! Not a job.
4) you don’t watch college games do you? Let me guess you were sitting in front of the tv saying “these refs are terrible”. They are cheating us.

Now with all that said I was attending a game in the 14th region Friday night and all I heard was “let them play” then from the same group “call a foul” “you blind”. So which is it? Let them play or call a foul?????? Now I was watching a game in 10th and 11th last night. Guess what I heard. Yep the same chants. Now if you are interested I have connections and could definitely hook up up to be an official for the weekend.

PS how many people come to your job and yell YOU SUCK all day?? Hope your life gets better so you won’t be blaming others on your failure. Good day mister!!

60-80 for varsity. Depending on location.

I think you’re way off on amount. You may want to ask around about your figures.

From an official buddy of mine but he could meant district or region games but he did say they get about 150 to do JV and a varsity game on same nite Also khsaa has nothing to do with officials. They are contractors and don’t work for khsaa.

I'm like 99.9% sure it's 75$ for a Varsity game. There's also a fee to get a crew to come, not sure if that's per ref or to the contractors or what.... I'm pretty sure JV games are 50$, but it might be 75$. But, it definitely isn't 45$ for a Varsity game. I'm 99.9% sure it's 75$.

Talk to a local ref and it looks like the truth is somewhere in the middle. KHSAA stuff I posted is state minimum

This is the 14th region pay.

"70 for varsity. Flat fee. Then Jv with 3 refs is $33.33. Jv with 2 refs $50"

"There’s a state mini for a varsity game during the season. But each regions policy board can choose to pay more if they wish. (14th) is $70. 15th is $65 13th is $75. No mileage is paid in any sport until the state finals and only if you live 100 miles away"

"In almost 20 years that I’ve called they have never paid mileage in the regular season. It’s a flat fee"

Sorry for blowing this up tonight lol

Kinda sad really. Refs have no accountability because they are contractors and khsaa has no control what so ever over them or anybody else for that matter. Local influences etc have more control over a ref than anybody

Calling games has to the one if the worst jobs there is give them a break
#27
I agree it’s very hard job and I couldn’t do it
#28
I don’t mind that they miss calls I know they can’t catch them all but when it’s so one sided that it actually gets to be funny then it’s bad you can make a call before it happens the girls played in Montgomery county and Jb game was that bad we just laughed and went on but some let things get out of hand and someone usually gets hurt they need to set the tone early and call it like they see it not be one sided most of us would not say a word when they miss a call and I do think some are bought off that being said I hope they do better in the tournaments and everyone gets a fair shake
#29
Game fees are $70 for varsity and $50 for JV. If you do 3 man JV you get $33. That a total of $103 a night. If you get a Boy/Girl double you get $70 a game so that $140 a night. There is no travel involved except for post season. So you can travel from Letcher Co to Estil for the most $140. That’s not much money. And you give any official The information where they can make $500 for a couple games they would gladly do it. Most of your summer leagues pay around $35 a game. I was told The Sportplex is paying a whopping $25 a game. So your info is off a bit.
#30
I'm fine with them missing a few calls, that's understandable. But, when they miss a ton of calls that's when I get frustrated. Especially, if it seems to be one-sided.
