Huntington (WV) 17 Belfry 9
#1
Hard fought game by both sides.
#2
Belfry is going to struggle without their QB.

They actually run a pretty complicated offense with some of their RPO plays. Someone who hasn’t been in the spot before to learn and make the right reads will struggle. I think they said he’s only out a couple weeks though, so they’ll be ok when it matters.

Turnovers was the key to this game correct them and might have been a different game. The young quarterback I thought did an outstanding job. Sure with the starter they might have played better that’s an assumption. Over all was a great game Huntington was way bigger and had some athletes but Belfry will be fine barring no bad injuries the rest of the year.#3 had a good game along with some of the other backs but come end of the year they will be a tuff out for anyone. Hope the young man from Huntington is alright but looked like he had a very bad break in his leg that was bad.

Like I said in the JC thread the Huntington and Charleston area teams in WV are very good. Belfry won’t see a team as talented as Huntington all year. The fact they hung tough says a lot.

Boyle would beat Huntington like a drum!

Quit trying to stir the pot. That game would be a dogfight.

No idea who would win. it really doesn’t matter. Boyle is the prohibitive favorite in 3A until someone knocks them off.

I'm not trying to stir anything. Huntington has a great line but plays typical WV finesse football. Boyle would wear them out that's a fact.

Regarding tonight’s game. The Pirates have ALOT of work to do. Definitely have to clean up the turnovers. Cant have 4 turnovers against a good team. I thought QB Coleman played a nice ball game. Taking his first varsity snaps at QB against a team like Huntington would be a tall proposition for anyone, let alone the young sophomore. That being said, the offense definitely lacked cohesiveness. Belfry’s intricate offense is predicated on timing, rhythm and pace. It was painfully obvious tonight, that the Pirates had neither.

Defensively, Belfry was Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde. Looked bad in the passing game. Looked great at times in the run game. However, IMO, it appeared that Belfry’s undersized lineman simply struggled to play between the tackles. LB’s constantly found themselves fighting off traffic, which led to Huntington being able to gut the Pirates when they really needed it.

All in all, Belfry will probably be fine. Especially if they get Browning backl in the next couple of weeks. As I stated in an earlier thread.....it’s gonna take his team the entire regular season to find their sea legs.

Turnovers obviously hurt the Pirates in the first half. I honestly think Huntington would have won regardless though. They were just too big and athletic. Belfry does have a lot of work to do, but they usually do this time of year, and each year by playoff time, they are ready.

The young pirates made a game out of what was clearly a mis-match on paper. Huntington had a few D-1 talent players and managed to keep them at bay. Defense, which was Belfry's strong point last night just needs to keep getting better.

Once those injured players return, Belfry will be a whole lot better. One game at a time. By the end of the season, they will be a contender.

Congratulations to the Highlanders on their victory.
Prayers for all those injured last night!!

This was a great game for Belfry as they now know what/where to work on. Both teams' work ethic was really consistent.

Huntington was so big, strong and athletic. They will be a fun team to watch as they progress this year.

Belfry bears watching as well; so athletic and fast!!
#13
Who was out for Belfry other than Browning?

I actually thought the backup QB showed some talent, but OJW is right, he just didn’t have timing and smoothness to run the playbook effectively. Huntington’s stout D had a lot to do with that also.
#14
I'm just gunna leave this right here.

Belfry better get their defense and especially their pass defense figured out before the playoffs.
#15
Boyle would wear Belfry out plus a bunch of other team just mad cause Belfry got beat suck it up buttercup

Half of Belfry's team is probably from Huntington. lol

WV finesse football? All WV did today was beat 2 of Kentucky’s perennial State Title Contenders, which also happen to be power football teams. And neither WV team is as good as Spring Valley (Huntington area) which is as power football as it gets.

All in all it was good game for the Pirates except for the turnovers. What was it 4 fumbles and 1 interception? Anyways there are plenty of bright spots. The young QB will get better as he plays in these big games. The backfield looked good and battled and the O Line fought hard against Huntington’s big D Line. Flip flop it around and belfrys D Line was a little undersized. But did fairly well against that big O Line. I look for the linebackers play big this year. Good learning experience and I’m sure Haywood will fix the problems he seen. Prayers to the young man that broke his leg from Huntington. It looked bad. Best of luck to the Highlanders the rest of the season. Y’all have a heck of a team. God bless.

That is simply not true. If they make it far enough they will see a couple teams as talented or more than HHS

Yep! That dominant line gave me flashbacks to another team I saw last year with one. Only this didn’t hurt as bad watching 😉

I promise there is one possibly two as or more talented, there are zero teams with that combo of size, power and overall team speed. Huntington is a bigger version of Boyle. The advantage I would give to Boyle is more accomplished receivers and a more accurate QB. The Blackwell kid from HHS has an arm that makes Lanter's look like a pea shooter. Lanter is more accurate and Smith makes catches only Smith can make IMO. Smith, to me, and the improved running game when Boyle has all their backs, gives them the edge over everyone in 3a. Otherwise, Belfry will see 3 teams total that can match Boyles size. Midland, JC, and HHS. No one they will see has a Reese Smith and to me he is the difference. There comes a time when great players make plays and Smith has proven that over and over. The catch late against Ballard was a thing of beauty that in all reality could/should have been an interception. Some kids have it, some do not. BTW, saying Blackwell's arm is stronger than Lanter no knock at all on Lanter. It was amazing the velocity with minimal effort that Blackwell got on his passes. At this level, I would take Lanter and his accuracy. HHS made it to the states semis in WV last year and I would predict about the same last year. Prayers for the Jackson kid from HHS who broke his leg.

I can't comprehend this so I have no reply. lol

As for the game it was ugly both ways. HHS, to me had chances to bury Belfry, but never did. They had a bunch of penalties and Belfry showed a lot of grit in hanging in there down 14-0. When Belfry didn't turn it over they had a 9-3 edge. When they did, it was 14-0 HHS. Coleman at QB had his moments and ran the option fairly well, but Belfry is better with Browing overall. Avery is an accurate passer, experienced, and a better runner. Coleman getting this experience is gold however. Belfry will be a tough out whomever they go against down the road and by that time in a one game situation will be tough. Long way to go between now and then and each week will be great to see how they improve.
#26
For reference, Belfry plays the largest(Midland 2000 students) and 4th largest(HHS 1600 students) public schools in WV. Both usually top 5 WV 3a programs. Belfry is 2-3 over the last few years against these two teams.
#27
Above poster is right. Boyle is better, but Huntington is much bigger and better up front.

Just like we are going to do to Pikeville:lmao:

Sometimes you just play a better team . Huntington was just the better team tonight. Belfry will be hard to beat the rest of the year. Including the Boyle County game.."............................:howdy::howdy::howdy: Corbin has some unfinished business with Belfry and Boyle County :welcome: to Corbin in November

Oh I’m not arguing with you on size. You’re absolutely right. Their front lines were huge!!! But the comment said belfry won’t face another team that talented. Which- if they make it far enough- just isn’t true. I’ll be the first to tell you I under estimated Boyle last year. I thought after we beat central it was ours for the taking. I won’t do that again. Boyle’s skill players are just that, SKILLED. From top to bottom. While BC might not have the size Huntington has, they are more talented. But this is why we posts, to share opinions. No one has to agree with me, but I believe it is 100% true. We had a super fast defense last year, but their WR’s were just as fast if not faster and disciplined. So while belfry might not face a team that BIG, they will face more talented teams.
