What is happening in Ashland....Coach Howell goes 24-6 and he is released! Something is not right with this.....There has to be something else...If he was fired for not making it to Rupp arena then shame on Ashland....If it is something else then time will tell!

From what Iâm told. Parents and players went to central office/board of education to express concerns of player mistreatment from verbal abuse. Not things that could be posted on here. For a guy who was a hometown guy and alum it seems from outside looking in thereâs more to the story than verbally abusing players.

This is not directed at you Explorer......I know that this is going to sound "old school"....But here we go...This generation of parents, all over the nation, does not want their kids to be "coached"...challenged...deal with adversity.....pushed to be as good as they can be....etc. What is going to happen when their son does not like his "boss".....Is mommy and daddy going to run to the "boss" and say....don't yell at "little johnny" it hurts his feelings. Also, let me mention this....when a school system or people with power or a weak minded superintendent or principal, "want the coach out"...they can find anything they want as an excuse..."he was mean to the kids"...."he worked them too hard"...."he did not have good lesson plans".... "he did not give us anything in the classroom"..."he did not beat an opponent by enough points"...."he did not play enough kids off the bench"....."he did not get them to Rupp"....."he cursed in front of the kids"....(And their is a BIG difference between cursing in front of kids and cursing "at" kids--for example--If a coach says during practice or a time out "is anyone going to get a "damn" rebound or hustle your "asses" back on defense-- that is cursing in front of kids--if a coach actually calls a kid a "dumba-- or directly curses a kid then that is NOT acceptable! Almost "EVERY" coach has cursed in practice or games! Also, I am sure that none the parents that went to the board of education do not curse in front of their kids or even "at" them. He without sins cast the first stone. Remember, what comes around goes around. I personally do not know Coach Howell or have a "dog" in this fight....I am just stating some facts that people do not want to hear!
Also, I believe that this is 3 coaches in 5 years....The people in "Tomcat County" might want do so soul searching to see if the problem is "ALWAYS" the coach or could it "possibly....just possibly" be the parents, AD, principal, administration or the superintendent? Just some food for thought,
EVERY parent should take 3:38 to watch this from Frank Martin.

Yes, Jeremy Howell was released for being "too tough" on the players. I have Ashland ties and a connection to this situation. It disappointed a lot of people but due to the pension issue being so big right now it has hardly received discussion in the public arena with the exception of sports-oriented websites like BGR.
Jeremy was tough on his players, but he's not nearly as tough as the last two coaches and he's certainly no Bob Knight with regard to how he treats his players. If anything, he's real laid back but still has a competitive drive he uses in motivating his players. One of the differences in Jeremy compared to the prior coaches is he will actually play to his players and not try to to make them play to his system even when it's not the best style for them. He will make the needed adjustments.
There may be something I'm missing here, but I doubt it. The administration would not tell me anything when I reached out to them about it. Ashland has Tony Love and Steve Dowdy coaching them in football - both are much tougher on their players than Jeremy is with his in terms of perspective of yelling at them, etc. They have been at Ashland for 20+ years as assistant and Tony will be on his 6th season as head coach. Jeremy assisted for probably 4-5 years before he took the head basketball coach job and had there been a serious issue with him, it probably would have come up before he took the position. They only hired Jeremy because everyone else turned it down due to the shape of the program. I thought it was a real steal, knowing his coaching ability as well as how well he can relate to players.
I definitely think there was something political in them letting Jeremy go. The situation is just not adding up. The same thing was done in baseball to Jeff Wilcox when he had a down year with a young team after winning the region back to back years. Ashland's current baseball coach was hired, he has done well but I don't see anything he has done that Wilcox couldn't have accomplished.
Jeremy is awful young, but had he been this age in 2000 and Ashland hired him they would not have that long streak without a regional title that they have. Ashland has not won the region since 2002, but they have reached the regional finals several times and come up short. Had Jeremy been coaching during that time, he would probably have several regional titles and maybe a deep run in the state tournament. Ashland has created a mess, and I sure hope Jeremy goes to a local rival and beats Ashland. Jeremy turned around a program that was lacking in talent and he didn't deserve this. So far I have not encountered one person that is for his firing - not one.

Well, a massive email went out the other day that was pushing for people to get in touch with administration and tell them that the people want Strader. I thought that was pretty interesting.

Didn't he coach at Russell?
04-13-2018, 06:36 PM
Strader will be next Coach and Ashland will get what they deserve. He will be gone in 2 yrs to spend more time with family.

Hearing a college coach is being courted.

Who or what college is this coach at now?

A KY native.

Hear the college coach is backing off.
Ashland always swings big and has to settle.
Not the program it once was.

Hmm, what next? I thought that was a lock.
04-19-2018, 06:46 PM
Did they offer Frankie again?
04-19-2018, 10:40 PM

Are you talking Frankie Smith? Why not get a coach with a proven track record of turning a program around and the possibility to stay for some time.

Jason Mays is the new head coach. Coach Mays has coached as an assistant at Georgetown College as well as Valdosta State and was named intern head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan in 2017. Excellent hire.

What experience does Mays have in high school? Anyone with more info on him.

I've read up on the guys philosophy. Ashland has some talent coming back. Hopefully he can harness it.
