I have known Ovie for a long time and would like to put in my 2 cents! I know first hand whats its like when you are waiting on a job and the powers that be want to try and make a Big Name hire. I can see them going after a Big Name if it is truly a program changing caliber coach. I can see it for a week or 2. To be honest i have not seen one name on the list that is. Ovie has been successful at every job he has had and has head coaching experience. He had success as a head coach at Evarts. He was successful as DC at Harlan Co, where he also gained experience under a coaching legend! He has been a big part in the rebuilding process of Perry Central Football, which also includes the youth football program and the relationship with the community! He is the face of the winter conditioning and weight program. Which has been very successful. He has a great relationship and respect of the players that play for him. We know this because all current players have already voiced that he should be the man to lead them!!! He is also invested with two sons that will be part of that program, so he has reason to stay for an extended period of time. Ovie is one of the hardest working people that I have ever known, not only in football but in what ever he does! He is also one of the most loyal people you will ever have the honor of knowing!! I know this because he has always had my back no matter the cost!!!!
To the powers that be. You are about to lose the best choice for Head Coach of PC Football if you don't get off you --- and do the right thing. I would love for him to come coach with me, but i know where his heart is right now. Its with Perry Central right now, but if things don't change soon it may not be for long!!
I have all the respect in the world for Coach Canady!! Do the right thing! Good luck Ovie, I wish you all the success in the world!!!!

Well heres another interesting rumor I heard this morning at Smitty's. Heard Mo Dixon was interested in the job. That is a pretty big name. But I would still rather have Ovie.

I like Ovie..but if mo Dixon wants that job, mo Dixon gets that job lol

Mo Dixon doesn't want this job. I would be very shocked.

Mo Dixon is not walking through that door. Luke Salmon is not walking through that door.

They competed for Perry and the school was the state runner up.

The level of success has not been there - and we can debate why that's not happened until the end of the world - but it is not because the administration isn't trying to build the program. Maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but not now.
I would wager the money offered to the CM coach would rival just about any head coach's salary in EKY.
Why can't they keep a coach? Why did the great (overrated) Haddix leave?

Of course back then in perry county everyoneâs son was raised Thinking they would be the next micheal Jordan so football wasnât really a focal point. But in the last couple of years it has rly picked up and you see them with teams with 40 to 50 players so I think theyâre moving in the right direction. Yes and if you check out his fbook page he has some results. Two kids are the state winners in their weight classes and some 2nd and 3rd placees. All this with only 10 kids attending the meet. Ovie and these kids have really put in the time and work to turn this program around. I wish people would open their eyes.

Anyone who has followed the program would agree with that. Itâs hard to compete in 5A when you have 7 or 8 kids playing both ways.
We just have some people in this particular thread offering opinions and it seems they donât know enough about the situation to have an opinion to start with.
Interest in the program from grade school through high school has picked up and the administration wants to keep that interest going and preferably increase it.
Six weeks into the season this year, every youth team in Perry County was undefeated. Since Larkey and Cannady came from Harlan County, Perry County feeder school kids have stayed with the program instead of going to neighboring schools. Perry just took second place in the state weightlifting competition. The school has the facilities to rival any school in the area and the compensation to match.
This is not a bad job right now and the hiring officials are in a position where they donât want to settle on something too early, but they know a new coach needs to be in fairly soon to make sure theyâre ready for the season. I wouldnât expect this to drag on much longer.

I agree with everything you said except the "settle" part. How would hiring Ovie Canady be settling? He's an experienced coach who was a huge part in Perry's turnaround, and the kids want him. Larkey had spring practice dates already set for mid April and some scrimmages worked out later with some schools when he decided he would retire.

For the record, I personally don't think picking Ovie is settling.
I don't speak for the administration either.
I'm just telling you what I think they're trying to do based on the information I have.

What happens there when/if they finally go to him and he says no thank you? What does that do to the program. Because at this point, he should do just that in my opinion.

I won't speak for Ovie, but how could he not be offended. They've more or less said we're going to offer the job to all these other coaches and if that doesn't work out then we still have you.

I think turning a job down out of pride is a bad idea.
He's obviously got some doubters, but telling Perry to stick it where the sun don't shine and going to be an assistant somewhere else isn't going to silence those doubters.
If he gets the offer, I think he should take it and it give it all he's got.
This decision impacts kids too. The kids want him and I'm sure they'd hate to see him turn it down after pulling for him the entire time.

When Plan B fails, you go to Plan C.

You've made yourself pretty clear how you feel about it.
It's obvious they want to land some big name and that is "Plan A."
If I apply for any job and I really want it, I would be fine taking it after someone else turns it down.
Would anyone in here really turn down a promotion wherever you work because they offered it to someone else first?

Depended on whether or not I was already happy doing whatever I was doing. Some people believe it or not still have a thing callled Pride. So I could see Ovie possibly telling them thanks but no thanks.

I have pride too, but if it comes to advancing my career and providing for my family I can keep my ego in check.
