Funny you had a fan from 13th region who put this question on the thread. So I think he might know more than rest of us. I was with fans from 13th made the same point at the game. I hope Estill fo great at state being from 14th region but I dont see them staying within 15 points of Corbin.

He’s just a Corbin hater from the 13th region. That’s why he came to stir the pot. Trust me, if you’re getting Greer and Morgan you’re getting the better 13th region refs. Could’ve gotten some of the lesser we have to offer that we have to deal with.

Who’s to say Estill can’t beat the 13th region team? Hell the 13th region tournament is practically a home game for Corbin..

Who’s to say that neither can’t hang with Scott County or whoever it is... Anything can happen this time of year. Teams get hot and don’t miss, teams that don’t usually don’t make mistakes will make mistakes tournament time. The first game is the only true preparation game you get because u have to wait a week to play. After that it’s back to back.. so who knows how it plays out...

I think this is totally unfair to an Estill County team that proved it belonged at the top of the 14th tonight. KCC didn’t look past Estill, they were outplayed by a better team who had the best player in the region.

Being there before isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when most of these guys from Knott (exception to Caudill) weren’t contributors to all those teams who made the runs to the Sweet 16.

Bentley had a game plan and executed it perfectly and they deserve all the credit for winning the championship. They won it, Knott didn’t lose it.

I apologize if you took my post as a slight to Estill. It wasn’t at all. Happy as a lark for them. Earned what they got.

However, I do think knott had the superior talent. Although talent does not always equate wins. Again, congrats to Estill. They earned this win and love seeing a group who played together for so long come away with it.

I don’t understand how a few post in this thread state that Estill County was a “dark horse” or “underdogs” or “overlooked”??? Their record is 26-7. They have wins over 16th region champ Boyd County in a tournament at Morehead. They lost to 10th region contender Paris by 4 in a tournament. Lost to South Laurel by only 6 in a tournament at Clay (the same SL that lost by 2 to Corbin in the 13th region championship. They lost on the road by 4 to a Somerset team won their All A region and and was semi finalist in the 12th region tourney. They beat 12th region contender Pulaski County. They beat several good Bluegrass area teams. They’ve won like 19 out of their last 20 or 21 games, not sure of the exact number on that.
I don’t understand with the schedule they’ve played and the record they have how anyone could have considered them an underdog or upset win in this game. Bottom line is Estill County has a very good team. And they proved tonight they are the best in the 14th region in this basketball season.

This is the first time in history the school has made it to Rupp. When Wichita State made their first big run in the NCAA Tournament, even though they were as good as anyone, they were labeled the underdog (unfairly). People just aren't used to seeing Estill as a contender, but the Engineers shut them up.

Congratulations to Estill County..They controlled the tempo first half and got Knott in trouble. Shots were not falling for the Patriots and the Bonny kid could not miss. I think had Knott County pressed the first half it would have been a different ballgame. What a story though, 14th Region player of the year carries his team to first ever Regional Championship!! That kid will never forget how he felt during that moment. Wishing them the best of luck in the State Tournament. Would love to see the 14th region get past the first round.

I come and go from this site, but if you’re a long timer and have followed my posts (don’t expect many to) you know I’m a KCC fan. I hate to see people try to make it about the team who lost rather than the team that won.

I take nothing personally. Those boys for Estill earned that championship. Objectively, these are the points that matter. Give credit where it’s due. I take losses way better than most Knott fans and have perspective.

On another serious note. How in the world is one ref that was a Corbin graduate, and another ref that is currently a coach at Corbin and principal at a Corbin school, allowed to ref a game that determines who play Corbin in the sweet 16? No dog at all in this fight, but that just seems unbelievable to me. Heads should definitely roll over that decision.

This is definitely a conflict of interest and he should of removed himself or been removed by his assignor in this game, it was a no win situation for him.

And also, the said referee(Corbin Principal) also Coached football with the now SUPERINTENDENT of Estill County, but that is not a conflict of interest too is it? Nah, he can still be fair.

I guess on those 14 calls that he made, the 13 that he made against Knott was just because it was the correct call. When all of them were 50/50 calls that could of went either way. I can see Estill getting some of them, but 13 out of 14 may of been a bit much. Did he just want to see his school play against someone that scores in the 40's? Hmmmmm, we will never know, but the question will always be in everyone's minds.

Did Knott County play well, heck no, did they shoot 1-14 in the first quarter, yes and that is what lost them the game. It was theirs for the taking and they didn't respond.

Congrats to Estill on their first Regional Championship, not taking away nothing from Coach Bentley or the 14th region MVP. They had a great year and deserve everything they have gotten, good luck in the State Tournament.

Want to comment on some things I have read on here. It was brought to Tackett’s attention why is the 13th region officials going to officiate in the 14th when they 14th plays the 13th in the finals and he brushed it off. This was the day after the drawing happened. COMMON SENSE and just doing what’s fair for ALL schools involved says the 13th should not have reffed in the regional tourney. Refs can change/impact and game, with one blow of the whistle. I am actually hoping to become a ref myself for next season, something I inspire to do. More then one school had this issue with the 13th officiating, look for a rule to be implemented where a region can’t ref another region they play in the 1st round at state. And No, I am not saying any ref cheated.

Back to the game, foul trouble Knott just could not overcome. If Caudill stays smart and does not pick up that 4th foul in the 3rd I could see a different outcome because he had to change what he was doing. Same way when Frazier for Cordia picked up his 4th Cordia had to change. Great coaches game from Bentley, no matter what was happening Estill played calm and collective. Represent us well at State! Go Engineers!

Same thing I believe happened last year in the 15th region, because the 14th/15th drew each other in the state tourney. An official was removed or removed himself from the game because his school was involved and did not want any questions like the ones being talked about today. Was the smart thing to do. Unfortunately, the smartest thing to do was not done and now there are a lot of questions flying around about the Corbin Principal and his friendship with the Superintendent of Estill County. Just sad that it could of been taken care of before it happened. :lame:

I suppose when one looks at it that way it does make sense. First time winner of a region.
However, I think some of that was due to their school being a member of the 11th region and later the 10th region for many years, regions that are usually loaded with top 20 rated teams. There’s probably many years that teams that are rated 4th or 5th in those regions would win the 14th region.
Estill has the enrollment to be a contender in the 14th in many sports. I think their high school has 725 students. I’m hearing they have a really good middle school and freshman team that could be as good as this one in a few years.

when did she step down from the broad. the funny thing to me is, a man from Knott Co told me all of this stuff. and he work at KCC, he don't have no ties with Cordia.
