North Laurel 75 Corbin 73
#1
Final
#2
Huge win by North. Thought Corbin was going to get bailed out at the end though.
#3
North Laurel Brian Gray 29pts
Corbin Andrew Taylor 27pts

I have seen a whole lot of North Laurel basketball during the schools existence, a lot of it not too good. But the third quarter tonight, when we outscored Corbin 28-7 to turn a 39-28 halftime deficit into a 56-46 lead, was as good a stretch as I’ve ever seen from the Jaguars. This is a fun team to watch, they very well may not win the region, but I think they have exceeded everyone’s expectations, and they will not be an easy out in the postseason.

North’s a better team than I along with a lot of others have given them credit for. That third quarter was as one sided as it could’ve been. North plays very good team ball and hit the big shots when they counted. Solid high school basketball was played tonight.

Taylor lost it for them tonight. Took way too many forced shots and at the end instead of driving to tie it he tried to hit a 3 to win it. 2 people open on the wings as well. Corbin crowd is terrible. Once they start to get beat, them and the coach start blaming officials for them getting beat. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Corbin gym. I know now that I won’t be back. Very bad sportsmanship in the “older”crowd

Kind of ironic that Corbin folks would act like they're getting cheated at home. Lol. Corbins coach will rip the officials if he's up by 15.

You must not have been anywhere near where I was sitting. Everyone around me was just impressed with North Laurel, especially the way they played in the 3rd qtr. and didn't have anything to say about the officiating. I actually thought Gray from NL was called for a couple of cheap fouls that shouldn't have been whistled. Other than that, game was called pretty even, North was just the better team tonight.

It's going to be an interesting 13th Region.

North did play great and deserved to win. But when it got close the crowd yelled at the referees a lot even though North had their 2 best players foul out. Corbin are sore losers.

The Corbin fans? What about the North players? Other than Gray that team complains about every call that doesn't go there way.

I said it at the beginning of the year and I"m sticking to it now-the 13th region tournament will be a blast.

I just don't see a clear cut favorite, despite the local media who touted Corbin was the runaway favorite based on how they performed in summer ball. Sorry guys, summer ball isn't the best indicator on how a season will progress.

I will repeat what another poster stated a few days ago-the 50th district title game at Corbin will be crucial and probably one of the most important district championship games either Corbin and South Laurel has played in-provided both take care of business against Williamsburg and Whitley.

Doesn’t need to be anything negative from this game, great high school game, if Taylor makes the last shot Corbin wins by one and it’s still a great high school game. Couple things.
1. Brian Gray is the most underrated player in 13th. I asked a family member of his where he was playing next year, she said no one had contacted him? Huh? 6-3, lot of range, quick with ball, passes well....he can play somewhere. Probably only behind Taylor, Turner and Ramey in region.
2. Putting any personal feelings aside anyone has Andrew Taylor is a great high school player, especially on the offensive end. I thought North actually did a real good job defending him last night, made him work very hard for everything with double teams and aggressive D, and he still put up 27.
3. Corbin’s weakness appears to be they are a little soft in the middle, Oster completely controlled the boards, and North got to the rim a lot. Stewart looks like he might could be a little more involved offensively too, he’s very dangerous shooting the ball.
4. Officiating—I’ve dabbled in all sports doing it. Basketball is by far the hardest. Jalen Rose said something on ESPN the other day when they were talking about how much NBA players complain about refs these days that stayed with me. He said 95% of the time when the whistle blows somebody winds up mad thinking they got a bogus call. And that’s true. Not a job I want, so I seldom complain about them. And I consider Nicholson, who was one of the three last night, the best ref in the 13th, steady, doesn’t make himself the show.
5. Anyway a great game that either team could have won, and either could win the region. And so could South, KC and maybe Harlan Co. Gonna be fun.
#13
Corbin is still (barely) my pick to win the 13th. However, this score combined with the beating Corbin took last Saturday in Lexington tells me that they are only a very slight favorite. I still think Knox Central is the 2nd best team followed by North and South Laurel. I don't think Harlan County will repeat as champion and no other team has much of a chance.

Congrats to Jags. Region should have some great games.

Is Gray #4? That kid was on. I also thought #24 was a nice player as well. I think when Rice comes back that’ll help with the big center. Seems like Corbin has always lacked that big center that these other teams will get from time to time.
#16
Forgot about Rice, did see him in street clothes. Why was he out? And is he expected back?

. I haven't seen him play in 3 years. He gets more attention being hurt than playing. Been 3 different places and not played at any of them.
Good kid that has been hurt by parents expectations and has now tapped out.

North Laurel’s coaching staff has done a fantastic job. The fact that they’re 23-4 after losing the players they did last year is really impressive. The way North plays is very entertaining. Their game agaisnt Knox Central should be fantastic to watch.

South has defeated North twice this season

Better not count Jackson county out either.. They are going to be a dangerous team also in the post season play..They gave Corbin a run for their money at Corbin and also just gave a battle with Knox central. The most dangerous team I've seen play n no one is talking much about is Lynn Camp and nobody wants to play them in the first round of region. I think it's a hard decision to tell who's going to come out on top in the 13th region because it could be any 8 teams it's which ever comes out and performs 3 great games I think n it could be a underdog this yr..

Think that kid is just looking for a free trip to Rupp. Like another poster stated about tapping out, heard he could have played against Corbin in the district when he was with Whitley but didn't then a few weeks later transfers to Corbin, lol.

Knox is a really bad matchup for North. Don't think it will be very entertaining for North fans.

We will be able to count Jackson County or Clay County out early on! They split the regular season games, each winning at home. Jackson is playing their best basketball of the season now, and Clay seems to be struggling. I honestly don't think any of the top teams fear playing Jackson County, Clay County, or Lynn Camp! Just one man's opinion. Respect, yes, fear,no.

I think north and knox will be a great game. Both coaches have done an outstanding job. Knox lost 5 seniors and a bunch of scoring as well. Patterson just flat out win games. I’ve always liked the way they play and his style. Hats off coach patterson and coach sizemore.

A few of my thoughts going as we wind down the regular season:

-Is Taylor trying to do too much? If so, a one man team doesn't bode well for Corbin.

-North, with the right draw, may just take the region. South Laurel has been a bad match for the Jags all season, and I don't think things would change in the regional. Looking forward to North-KC later next week.

-South Laurel should be at the top of this week's rankings, but knowing Les at Times Tribune, Corbin will keep the same spot. Some will point out the Cards last several losses. Those losses were to Dunbar, Henry Clay and GRC. Henry Clay had just upset Madison Central the week prior. South will host Madison Central this Monday. Enough said about the quality of competition that Coach Davis has scheduled.

-I said this weeks ago, and it bears repeating, there are a couple of teams I would NOT want to play in the first round of regionals. Lynn Camp comes to mind, followed closely by Jackson County.I think someone big gets upset in the first round this year.

-This is my favorite time of the year. I'm on vacation from work and I literally have a HS game per night to check out. I will be at South for the Madison Central game on Monday night, then traveling to my alma mater, Oldham County for their match with Bardstown on Tuesday night. Bardstown is coached by former UofL star, James Boo Brewer. I'll have several more games to check out later next week as well.

If Whitley can win tonight against Cordia I think they can finish the season on a 3 game winning streak. This team has talent and all they need is some confidence and healthy bodies. That bunch plays South hard and believes they will win if they get them in round 1 of district. Will know for sure Monday who they get but will be waiting for the results of tonight's game against one of the 14th regions better teams to tell if they really have a chance or not.
