Peggy Moore from Buckhorn back in the late 70's. and she use to coach Breathitt Co. she is the first name come to my mind, when I think of the best women basketball player.
#3
Epps no doubt!
#4
Or I may go with Ukari Figgs!!
#5
Valerie Still
#6
Kristie Combs was a great player I would also rank Whitney Creech up there as far as the mountains but can't say how they are statewide

When did Kristie play? I remember a lonnng time ago, a Combs girl playing in a set of knee pads. That kid was all over the place, offensively and defensively. Pretty, petite blonde but all over the place!!

Kristie played on the MC Napier team that won the state tournament in 94. She went to U.K. On scholarship but didn't stay. She is also in the Ky hall of fame and referees games now. Of course I'm to young to remember this it's just what I've been told lol

High school? without a doubt Geri Grigsby..still holds a bunch of state records and some national records..

That's her! I wasn't sure what team she played for but MC Napier is it.

I was a girls' basketball coach back in the 90s and not impressed by a whole lot of things. But that child impressed me. Never seen her effort and work ethic equaled by too many other kids.

Peggy Gay was her name in high school.

Ukari Figgs won a state title in 1995 with Scott County and was named Miss Basketball. She went on to play at Purdue and averaged 16 points a game her senior year while winning the national title and was named MVP of the final 4. Played in the WNBA for 5 seasons? Won a title with the LA Sparks in 2001. Not a bad resume.

Kentucky Miss Basketball List, in case anyone forgot about someone.

I had not heard of Figgs but that is an impressive resume. I'm still partial to our mountain players
#16
Figgs was also an assistant coach at UK for a while

You must of been a very young coach

We've only had 1 Gatorade national player of the year, Erin Boley.

Of course, I realize that award has not be around since 1975 either!!!

In discussing best players it always come to one opinion vs another. I know she didn't get the attention of some other players but Creech setting the national scoring record was a great accomplishment. I know some people say this and that to try and diminish what that means, but that kid went out night after night with very little help and scored points on defenses geared up to stop her, and scored more points than any other kid in the nation ever has. I'm going to put her number 1 on my list

I agree. In High School she was the best I ever watched play. Saw her score 74 in one game. She started on Boy's Baseball Team at Short Stop. Best Girl's player I ever saw.:Clap::Clap::Clap: In High School her name was Peggy Gay.

If we are talking stats Creech is definitely the best. When she played good teams and coaches they would try everything to stop her and she would end with 50 or 60 or 70 lol every game she is really unbelievable

have to throw in another plug for Grigsby. she still holds the national record for points in a season 1,885. Most most points in a game in Ky with 81 and she scored all of her 4,385 points in three seasons for a career average of 46.1..Another national record. She averaged 8 rebounds and 7 assists that whole time .
What Creech did was amazing but pound for pound no one scored like Grigsby. She ended up with a good career at WKU too.
#23
We can agree to disagree on who is the best, but Grigsby, Peggy Gay, and Whitney Creech were all great high school players
#24
Any of yall heard of Kendall Noble?
#25
Kayla Rankin? People sure forget awful quickly.
#26
I would take winning over any individual stats. I am not knocking the phenomenal stats put up by some of those players at all but when I hear the word BEST I think of total package which includes winning. All listed are great players but only one can say they have won at every level and played at the highest level.
#27
You're talking about the teams she has played on. If you're talking about the individual best player scoring would have to be at the top of the list. We'll never know what Creech would have done on a team with more good players, but the fact she scored more points in her career than any other player in the nation tells me she is the best to ever play.
#28
. It's hard to compare scoring when one played four years, one played six, another seven and another only three. If the ones that only played three or four years had played six or seven what might they have scored? Sadly we'll never know
#29
Jamie Walz was very good. We could sit here be argue for days but the fact of the matter it this state hs produced a lot of very good girls basketball players over the years. Southeastern Kentucky has been blessed with a lot of top level girls players over the years. You could go down the list from Kristy Combs to Brigette Combs to Carolyn Alexander and so forth and make valid arguments for all. These type threads are always my favorites because of the varying opinions!
#30
With better teammates Creech would have won more but scored much less. Scoring is just part of the game. Walz could flat out score the basketball! Epps was/is as good of a player to ever play in Kentucky. If the post had said best scorer in Kentucky history then Creech would be tops.
