Johnson Central 79 Magoffin County 55 (57th District Championship)
#31
Mister D Wrote:JC played one heck of game tonight offensively and defensively. It looked like they were really prepared to take advantage of certain mismatches. They also pressured the ball out of Lovely and Russell's hands all night long. Big congratulations to JC on another district championship! Mullins for Magoffin looked really banged up tonight with two instances where he had to be helped off of the court. He gritted it out tonight but you could tell he was not full strength and MC had a big drop off going to the bench. Hopefully he will be 100% for the regional tournament. I would not be surprised at all to see these two meeting again next week.

Magoffin County may have a Mr. Basketball candidate on their team, but coaching and preparing your players wins games.

Tonight was proof of that. JC shut down Mr. Basketball and Lovely.... and that's why JC cut down the nets and won their 19th 57th District championship.

Magoffin had a bad game coming off a tough win , just had a let down . JC had no game with Paintsville. JC played a great game

If JC shows up and plays the way they played last night I think they walk to the sweet 16, and to basketball 101, you are playing for a district championship, you are playing a rival, you have the POY on your team and you are playing the most hated team in eastern ky, no let down just flat out wore out by a better JC team

"...the most hated team in eastern ky", when did this happen? Proud JC fan and don't have any inside connections, but you'll have to explain your reasoning to me. However, if you're a PHS fan, I understand.

JC
Mason Blair 22 points with 8 assist and 4 steals
Cole Crace 22 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assist
Jacob Rice 15 points with 3 of 4 from 3
Dalton Collins 12 points with 4 of 4 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line

MC
Jaren Lovely 18 points
Ryan Mullins 15 points with 9 rebounds
Trenton Russell 7 points

In watching the game you knew that defense was the key but after looking at the stats....wow.

Magoffin was 21 of 61 from the floor (34%) and 2 of 14 from three (14%).
Lovely was 6 of 15 from the floor (40%) and 1 of 6 from three (16%).
Lovely has 0 assist.
Russell was 1 of 15 from the floor (6%) and 0 of 5 from three.
Russell had 0 assist.
Johnson Central did a great job on these two excellent players.
The two man trap on Lovely in the half court defense was HUGE.

Not a PHS fan, just seems to me that every one in the region would rather beat JC than any other team they play, i am just a casual fan who likes high school basketball but seems every time I watch JC it is the other teams biggest rival, I guess hated might have been the wrong word. I was just trying to stress that their is no way that should have been a let down

The full court press and the half court trap on Lovely and Russell was very effective. You could tell there was big frustration from those two as they started forcing some shots over double teams and obviously the technical foul on Lovely. I think Dalton Collins really stepped up for JC today as the 6th man. At times they struggled to rebound he came in and played with some physicality and did a great job boxing out. Plus he had a career high 12 points and played with a lot of confidence. If he carries that over JC will be even stronger.

Thanks for the compliment. UK gets other teams best effort and are their "make their season" win. Same for North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, etc. You get the pattern, when you are premier you accept the bulls eye.

Let's be honest.... everybody has certain teams on their schedule they circle as 'Easy Wins'.

In JC's case as THOMCAT stated, everybody gives JC their best shot. Usually other teams will have a bigger than normal crowd when JC comes to town, not just in basketball, but in almost every sport. Nobody wants to play JC for their Homecoming game or Senior Night. JC's overall athletic program is finally where it should have been 20+ years ago. Golf, XC, Football, Wrestling, Boys & Girls Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Dance, Swimming & Diving, Track & Field, Cheerleading, Bowling, Volleyball, Boys & Girls Soccer..... I could go on and on.

For a mountain school with a population not even close to what some areas have, JC has shown it can be done. You can have statewide success coming from a small town in Eastern Kentucky.

As Ric Flair said "To be the man, you gotta beat the man... and I'm saying right here, I'm the Man!!!"
And in the 15th region, JC is the Man!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Johnson Central should win the 57 district and 15 Region every year. Based on their enrollment in which they double everyone that they compete against it should not be that difficult. They have clearly a larger pool of athletes to choose from. When they win a state championship in basketball, then I will say they are the "man" but until then they are just another team winning against smaller schools. A trip to the state championship is just that, a "trip" until you win it all.

Somebody is "eat up with it." JC should never lose to any of the much smaller schools in the 15th, yet they consistently do. Please.

Coaching and prep? It took them long enough to figure out to double Lovely. Sure can't guard one on one. That should have been figured out on Dec. 1. Not rocket science heck it is not even earth and space.

Jc won District because they played well and simply have more man power that has some talent. And they are favorite in region. And should be, but they can be beat. That why you play the game.

^^^ it's not rocket science either that if your point guard is getting double teamed everytime he touches the ball then someone else is open. Magoffin made no adjustments to counter the double team and consistently took tough shots going straight against the double team. They should have spaced the court and quickly rotated the ball backside to the wide open man. I saw several plays where there was a man open right beside of the basket but Lovely and Russell would try to take a contested jump shot instead of rotating the ball. If there is a rematch I would expect another heavy dose of half court traps and they will have a week to "prep" for it.
