If Johnny Martin is let go, then it will not be because of his coaching skills. Success on the court isn't the only part of coaching. It comes in the classroom as well. A job in the school system isn't just about one aspect - coaching. It is an all around job on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
As for the baseball coach a few years ago, . Winning is not the only part of success. Character has to do with a great deal of success.
I think Coach Martin is one of the most profound coaches to ever be on the sidelines in the 15th Region as well as the state of Kentucky. I don't think he is quite up to par in the classroom however.

It's sad that all most people understand is the final outcome in most situations.
As for the Allen Central baseball program goes as it relates to Coach Patton being let go after winning a regional championship...I know people that are and were very close to that program...without exception, these people tell me that the program had some very serious problems that even winning a regional championship wouldn't warrant allowing him to come back.
Based on what I understand...the program is in great shape right now.
They have a fine young coach with very high moral standards.
Basically, what is winning a championship worth?
I think if you ask any parent they will tell you that they would rather have their child coached by someone that is going to teach them 'life lessons' along with the game as opposed to winning at all costs with an 'anything goes' attitude.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Coach Martin...mentioning Coach Patton in this thread in first place in ridiculous...two totally different type of situations.

The rumor is not unsbustantiated by any means. There is a little click of people at Allen Central that believe the program is better off without Johnny being in charge for an assortment of reasons.
Those who want rid of Johnny need to identify themselves and state their reasons why they believe he should be dismissed.
Whether it's a SBDM member, the principal, or someone from the select little click of dictators that are trying to pull rank to come forward and face the music instead of hiding in the shroud of darkness.
Make a statment to the media, fans, on this site. Something. Come clean and come forward. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WE DO TOO.

We need to leave the Patton/AC discussion out of this. Different circumstances. It has nothing to do with Coach Martin and AC. You cannot even use it as a comparison.

I know firsthand that the kids at AC love Johnny Martin.I cant anyone would want to get rid of him. My kids love him.I dont know who this is starting this but dont be a coward, come foward. Get up in front of the student body at Allen Central and tell them why you want rid of him. I DARE YOU!

They're too scared.
Loved hearing the student section from Allen Central the other night saying, "We Love Johnny" and then watching Johnny turn with a thumbs up to the students.
He's a great guy to be around. He doesn't kiss up to get players to come to AC and play or join the team. He works the officials and has their respect. 24 winning seasons out of 26 with a bright future coming back next season. And the boys on the teams are good kids.
He calls them like he sees them. The last of a dying breed that's for sure.

As far as my mentioning Coach patton in this thread- NO it is not ridiculous. The point was -- a winning season does not give you job security. Coach Patton was used as an example. He coached his team to a Regional title and was not rehired. I'm sure there are countless other coaches who have been in smiliar situations. Like you said, "What is winning a championship worth"? Since you have stated that these are two totally different types of situations- I will assume that you have first hand knowledge of the "situation" at ACHS. Whatever the reasoning behind Coach Martin's rumored dismissal, let's hope that the powers that be will do right by the students/athletes at ACHS.
I agree Coach Kenneth Johnson appears to be doing a fine job with his team at ACHS. Winning a district title as first year head coach is a fine accomplishment.

I have no knowledge of the basketball situation at ACHS...
My point was, I know what the baseball situation was...to compare what happened to Coach Patton is not comparing 'apples with apples'.
Coach Patton's not getting hired back apparently had nothing to do with winning...seems like it had more to do with moral issues.
On top of that...the first priority for schools should be an EDUCATION not if the sports teams win or lose. Believe me, I'm as competitive as anyone...but I'm also intelligent enough to know that the majority of these kids will never earn a cent by playing sports. The percentage of the participants that will even get a college scholarship for sports is very, very small.
I am a fan of Coach Martin and Coach Patton...they have done wonderful things for ACHS sports and the community.
Sometimes I wonder why people send their kids to school...to play sports or get an education.
Leaving an emotional decision up to immature kids is not the thing to do either. Kids tend to lack the ability to see the 'big picture' in life.

I know Ronnie Patton (Former Baseball Coach), Rady Martin (Former Assistant Basketball Coach), and Johnny Martin. These are the facts, like them or not.
· Ronnie Patton, won the schoolâs first and only 15th Regional Baseball tournament a couple of years ago and was fired less than two weeks afterwards. The reason he was given by the administration was because of parental complaints. Ronnie Patton has worked for over 25 years as a teacher in Floyd County. Iâve never known of any moral problems (like I read in an earlier post) related to this man.
· Rady Martin, Asst. Coach for the Rebels was fired a couple of weeks ago as Asst. Coach. The reason he was given by the administration is âThe Perceptionâ of several parents was that he and Johnny Martin were laughing and making fun of the ACHS players during several games that ACHS lost this season. Rady was volunteering his time and receiving no pay for helping the team.
· Johnny Martin was not re-hired as Athletic Director in 2005-06. I donât honestly know the reason he was given for not being re-hired as AD.
· As of right now Johnny Martin has been told he will not be re-hired again next season as basketball coach at Allen Central because of his record over the last couple of years. He was also told by the administration that âThe Perceptionâ of several parents was that he was laughing and making fun of the ACHS players during games they lost this season. Johnny has taught for over 25 years. To my knowledge he has never been questioned over teaching his classes (like I read in an earlier post). Johnny has also coached basketball at ACHS since 1981-82 ---- his record speaks for itself.

I would like to say that Coach Martin is a class act.
2nd -- In today's society administrators are letting the parents run things. It is
getting to the point that if a parent don't like the coach they try to get
a group of people together to try to get rid of a coach
3rd -- I read in an earlier post that out of 26 seasons Coach Martin has had 24
WINNING SEASONS. His record speaks for itself

Johnny is a class act!! How about hiring him some paid assistants and how about letting him spend some $$$$ for his program! Johnny Martin is not the problem!!!

I think the whole laughing thing can be taken several ways, he could either be laughing at the refs for calls, laughing at his teams overall preformance because he knows they can do better, or be just laughing at the situation the schools putting him in. I think its the third because I know I'm laughing at the school right now for wanting to let probably one of the best overall person I've ever actually sat down and had a conversation with go. I'm from Paintsville and its not uncommon to see Coach Runyon laugh at his teams preformance, parents don't say anything, so that is no excuse. If the school wants to let him go come up with something other than that, that is rediculous. I seriously doubt parents of young adults would be upset with someone trying to teach, coach, and prepare their son for the future. Discipline is what any coach has to do to his players. Knowing some of the players there is nothing that I can see from his players that would make me think any less of his discipline on his team. They are always well respected just about every where they go. Martin is a great man, great coach, and more importantly a great role model for any school. Its a shame the school would let him go just after 2 bad seasons and him being near eligibility for retirement. Let him finish it out, he brought AC basketball on the map with great teams of the past, and I know they will be back soon as long as he's the man behind the whistle. He's the right man for the job, and no reason to let people's egos or envy get in the way of everything right he has done for the school. Let him stay!!
03-02-2006, 03:04 AM
Good luck to coach Martin.
03-02-2006, 10:16 AM
Again, I will repeat "Coach Martin should be able to depart under his own terms" he deserves more respect than that from the leadership at AC. But, knowing the person that Coach Johnny is, he will probably walk and away and let them have it! Wishing you the best Coach.

Well from a former player and alumini from A.C.H.S. I think Johnny needs to hang it up. Whether it be retiring or fired. He is the reason i did not play my full 4 yrs. and i am sure i am speaking for alot of other former players also. When i was there there were people that were walking the hallways (and we will never know the answer) that could have been playing and ACHS could have went to the state a few times. Johnny is bad for ACHS and has been for along time. I know this is a rumor and i wasn't going to comment but everyone says he is so great, would like to know how many of these people played for Johnny. 26 yrs and 1 state tourney qwith all the talent that has been at the School. Can't make me believe he is good for ACHS. i would sign a petion to get ride of him in a minute. Move on Johnny.

I think he is a great coach. Look at the other teams in the region that he has had to compete with for a title in those 26 years. If he has been there since 1980, he has gone up against these 15th Region teams that have won a couple of straight titles:
1981-82 Virgie (2 Region Titles - 1 Mr. Basketball)
1985-87 Paintsville (3 Region Titles - 1 Mr. Basketball)
1990-92 Belfry (3 Region Titles)
1995-98 Paintsville (4 Region Titles - 1 Mr. Basketball)
2002-03 Shelby Valley (2 Region Titles)
So out of those 26 years these teams have won the Region 14 years. So he has only been to the state tournament 1 in 12 years. That is not bad, considering the teams that he has played in this region. I think Coach Martin has done very well at Allen Central and I wish him the best of luck whatever happens!!!!!

My question is why do all the players quit him. Last yr he had 5 or 6 players quit. This yr he had 3 or 4 i think. Johnny Martin is far from a class act as a coach people. Maybe in Life he is but by no means as a coach. Once again Johnny hang it up bud.

There are always players at every school who walk the hallways and could be considered good players if only they would play. At every school. This very seldom happened in the old days but now happens every year.
There are very, very few coaches who don't seek out the best players from their schools to play- all the coaches want to win. Contrary to popular opinion, I can't think of a coach who wouldn't play anyone who could help him win games.
However, having said that, there has to be some reason why players of ability don't play. The number one reason is they don't like the discipline that comes from being a member of a team. They have to follow rules and condition (yes, you have to run to play basketball- it is a .running game.)
They have to practice daily and sometimes on weekends. Some don't get to start and don't want to work hard enough to improve and earn that shot. They may not be able to work that job that makes their car payment. There are a myriad of reasons why youngsters today don't play.
I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't play "because of the coach." That is a cop out of the highest order. If you want to play bad enough, you'll play for Saddam Hussein if he is the coach.
Johnny is no different from any coach in that he has former players who leave unhappy over playing time or no playing time at all. He also is no different in that he occasionally makes mistakes in judgment. Can you name one coach who has always been perfect?
There have been a lot of great teams at AC over the years. I can think of at least 15 who would win this year's region in a cakewalk. Many of his best team's did come up against dynasties in the regional - usually in the finals. That's has to do with being in the right place at the right time. Ask any coach about the difficulty of winning the region. There have been many excellent coaches who finished their careers without ever winning the region.
A coach should be judged over what he does over a career- not a season or two or even seven or eight. My god, tell me what coach who is active now will ever be able to survive for 30 years as a coach in today's volatile coaching climate. Give him a medal for enduring this long.

People have different opinions. But some of the opinions I have seen on here have been pretty stupid. Now I am not the biggest Johnny Martin fan in the world but if he does get fired? That would be a very tough way to go out considering all of the success he has had at Allen Central. Plus it would make alot of people made and they wouldnt cope well with the Administration. Now I have a similar story just like BlueGrassRules, I played as well my Frosh year (I am a junior now) but my Sophomore year and this year I said no way I will not play for Johnny. The players that played this year are pretty bummed and pissed off that Johnny would be fired, but I am suspecting that he getting fired for reasons other than coaching (but dont know what). The best way for him to go out would be retirement, and I respect Johnny Martin as a man he is a great person, but he isnt the best coach, might be a legend but not one of the best. Good Luck Johnny in your future!

Am I reading this wrong or are you actually questioning the character of Ronnie Patton? If I am reading it wrong I will go ahead and apologize.
But I would like to elaborate on the situation..I have been friends with Coach Patton's daughter for several years and have come to know the man very well..He is a great person whose character should never be in question..As for the coaching situation..You win a regional title and you have to be a pretty good coach..I was shocked when this happened..
Who do I blame in this whole situation for both Ronnie and Johnny? The principal..She should have stayed retired..There is not an athletic bone in her body, yet she seems to think she knows what she is doing when it comes to the athletic department.
I for one hope everyone in Floyd Co. gets behind Coach Martin and allows it so that he can say when he is done.

Ronnie Patton is one of the finest people I've ever met in my life! And evidently the Floyd County Board of Education, ACMS, and Duff Elem. think so too because there is a plague hanging on the wall of their gym when you first enter that says "Ronnie Patton Area". I canât see the Floyd County Board of Education allowing a gym to be dedicated in honor of a person whose character is (or ever has been) in question.

Man Allen Central will regret this one ! They shouldnt have fired him ! If he wanted to leave I would've let him resign as Head Coach before firing a Legend ! He had two years were there was no talent ! And you fire him! Well I want to let Johnny Martin know that he has had a great career as Head Coach at Allen Central !
