I will be breaking 2a down district by district here and adding my preseason predictions.

District 1
This last year was one of the toughest districts in all the state. You had the eventual state champs who were ranked #1 or #2 all year. Then you had the 2 times in a row semi finalists in Murray. They gave the Cards all they wanted last year and were senior loaded with a load of talent. The Tigers were also in the top ten all year. Then you had an improving Bomber squad from Ballard County who has made a history of winning lately. They finished up at 5-6. Then they round it out with a lack luster Webster County squad.
This year will be a down year for district 1.
Mayfield Cardinals will again be the leaders of this group and should be the preseason #1 team for the state. The Cards lose 16 seniors from last year that mostly contributed for several years. They lose 2 big offensive linemen in Jackson and Adams. They lose all every team kicker Sidney Herndon. They lose 3+ year starters in Hernandes and Kennemore. They lose all 5 receivers as well. But they return both the starting qb and RB. They return 2 receivers that got substantial time last year. They return 4 starting offensive linemen and added a returning big man on the line. They also return 3 of their starting LB's, all of which were named to all WKC team. They return a safety that will play linebacker. They return a LB that will play safety, which he started as in his soph year. They return another starting safety and a CB. They have added their offensive coordinator from 3 years ago. This will undoubtedly result in more scoring. They also added the ex head coach from Martin Westview, Tn to the staff. So, this is the reason for my pick.
The Tigers from Murray should still be district runners up this year. I however do not expect them to crack the top ten. The Tigers lost 15 seniors from a squad of 57. They lost the big threat qb of Dejavani Miles, who was a threat to score at any time on anyone. They also lost a division 1 lineman/DE in Trey Hornbuckle. They lost a whole slew of others that were crucial to their success. They still have a coach with state championship experience at the helm though and he will not allow them to slump too much.
Ballard Memorial should still be the third place team. They will front load their schedule for early season success in hopes of translating that into some confidence. They also always manage to find a few athletes to work around.
Webster County will continue their reign on the forth seed. They lost only 6 seniors. That would be a good thing to most but, when you only field 33, that's still a hit. In looking at them last year, I just don't see the speed needed to make a lot of improvement.

District 2
Owensboro Catholic
The Aces would appear to be in a great position to repeat as the district champs this year when you look at the numbers. They only lose 14 out of a roster of 64. But when you start looking at what players they lost, you can see how this district will tighten up this year. They lose the big time LB Boarman. They lose a 1300 yard rusher in Gardner. They lose a 1,000 yard reciever and great return specialist in Morton. They also lose the top qb in 2a for the state last year Zuberer with over 3,500 yards. I understand they have a sophomore qb they feel can fill Zuberer's shoes though. I really expect this district to tighten between the Aces and Butler County this year. I do expect the Aces to win the district though and again come in as Regional runners up.
Butler County
I expect this team to be in the top 10 this year and really push the Aces for the district title. They lose their receiving Corp but return King Rex (Henderson) to the role of qb/safety. This kid was near the top of the state in 2a last year. If they can find him some recievers, he will top that list this year. I think they will be able to find the right players for those roles when you consider this senior group was the state champs as 8th graders. They finished 9-3 last year and could improve on that this year.
McClean County
McClean should remain in this role this year. They went 5-6 last year and I look for them to duplicate this record this year. They lost 9 seniors from a squad of 46.
Todd County Central
This squad has been showing signs of improvement recently. They however were hit hard by graduation losing 12 from a squad of 42. If memory serves me correctly, they lost most of their skill though. I expect them to continue their role this year and to struggle a little more than last year.

District 3
This is the first district that I expect to see some change in.
Glasgow
The Scotties finished last year at 6-6 right behind Monroe County. The Scotties are a pretty traditionally rich program though. That plus what they have returning should jump them into the drivers seat for this district. The Scotties only lost 3 seniors from last years squad of 49 and didn't lose much skill at all. I look for them to take the district but get eliminated by 1 of the 2 powers from district 4 in the playoffs.
Monroe County
I think this squad was one of the surprises of 2a last year. I think they have been hit too hard by graduation to be the MAN in this district this year though. They lose 18 to graduation from a squad of 48. This includes a qb and 4 receivers. They do however return a good RB. They should finish as district runners up and could make it to the second round of the playoffs.
Green County
Another well known 2a team that has some history and could surprise me. I however think with the disappointing season they had last year at 4-7 and losing 16 of 48 to graduation, that they should remain in the #3 spot.
Metcalfe County
This is a team that I remember from around 05 as being a pretty dominate team. However, it appears the numbers are not there for much success. They finished at 2-9 last year. That in itself is disappointing. Then, you couple that with the fact that they lost 11 from a squad of just 36 players. This is why I see them at the bottom again this year.

District 4
This very well could be one of the top 2-3 districts in the state this year.
DeSales
I know there has been a lot of chatter about CAL overtaking the Colts this year, but I don't see it. The Colts had won 2 straight state titles in 13 & 14 before losing to the eventual state champs in 15. That alone should speak to why they should be picked to win their district and host the substate championship. The Colts were hit hard by graduation losing 20 players to graduation but, this is a squad of 99. In my mind from all the film I watched on them and watching them in person twice last year, they were not near the team without the all everything qb. They lost him and a lot of other talent to graduation though. I still don't think the cupboard is bare and I think they should still have enough to host the Cardinals the day after Thanksgiving and finish as Substate Runners Up.
Christian Academy of Louisville
This team has split games with the powerhouse Colts over the last 2 seasons and finished last year as Regional Runners Up with a record of 10-3. I look for them to finish this year as district runners up and regional runners up. They have 2 of the most dynamic players returning at qb and wr. They will both be sophomores this year. I think they will be much better next year with the maturation of this years group of freshmen.
Washington County
I look for this group to remain in the same spot just looking at the numbers. They went 5-6 last year. They however lost 11 from a group of just 38 to graduation. I still think they should have enough to prevent them from dropping another spot.
Shawnee
The numbers say it all when dealing with this pick. Shawnee finished up last year at 0-10. You, couple that with what they lost and the outlook is bleak. They lost 6 from a group of 27, which is almost 1/4 of the team.

District 5
This is a district that no one seems to want to take control of and may be the hardest for me to pick.
Walton Verona
This squad avoided a losing season last year by finishing at 6-6. They only lost 9 seniors from a squad of 48. This loss included a RB and qb though. I still think they will win the district but, won't have enough to compete with district 6.
Carroll County
Finished last year at 5-6 and lost 13 of 45 to graduation. This included a qb and 2 rbs. I still think they have enough to make the push to district runners up.
Gallatin County
Went 4-7 last year but only lost 7 from a squad of 44. This did include a qb, but surely the numbers will work in their favor.
Owen County
Finished up last year at 6-5. They however lost 10 from a squad of 43. This included 3 rbs and a wr. I still think they have enough to make them competitive in this district.
Trimble County
Again the numbers tell all when dealing with this group. They finished last year at 0-10. They also lost 10 seniors from a squad of just 41. This loss included a qb and RB.

District 6
This is the power district of the east side of 2a and should remain as such this year.
Newport Central Catholic
The Thorobreds finished last year at 9-6 and state runners up. I look for them to do about the same this year. The Breds didn't lose enough to bump them from the thrown. They lost 14 seniors from a squad of 55, which is good numbers considering the rest of the east side as far as numbers go. The Breds however lost a beast on defense in Maleek Lawrence, who warranted a double team on every snap. They also lost big time back Jacob Smith. They however return on of the best qb's in the state and plenty of help. I expect them to win the east again and come up a little more short this year at state.
Covington Holy Cross
These Indians went just 6-6 last year but have a history of playing good ball. I expect them to return to form this year. They only lost 5 seniors from a squad of 42 that saw 4 8th graders listed. I expect this to mean they will be more experienced and mature this year. I therefore think they will make the jump to district runners up.
Loyd Memorial
They had a great year last year and return a lot of numbers this year. They finished at 9-4 and return 60 off a squad of 74. They could pull off the number 2 spot again in this district but, I expect Holy Cross to overtake them.
Newport
Again, the numbers tell all. They went 1-10 last year. They also lost 10 seniors off a team of just 42. That leaves them returning less than anyone in this district.

District 7
This may again be the tightest district in the state.
Lexington Christian Academy
This team if not for Danville would have been the buzz in all of the east last year. They finished up at 8-5. They lost only 8 seniors from a squad of 45. It would appear though that 6 of those were starters. They return one of the better qb's in 2a. I expect the Eagles to win the district and region. I do expect them to fold under the pressure of the other private school from the north at substate.
Danville
It's gonna be hard for the Ads to duplicate last years success with the losses they took. The Ads finished last year at 12-2 and sub state runners up. They were however hit hard by graduation. They lost 16 from a squad of 48. 10 of those were either starters or had substantial playing roles. This from a team that played a lot of iron man football. I still think they have enough speed and tradition to hold at least the district runner up spot.
Somerset
The Bunnies are trying to return to dominance but, are still at least another year away. The bunnies finished last year at 6-5. They also lost 10 from a squad of 47. It appears only 4 of those were starters though. They should tighten things up a bit more this year but, I look for them to finish in the same spot.
Middlesboro
Again, the numbers say it all. Finished last year at 1-10. They lost 7 seniors from a squad of just 28.

District 8
Another tough district to call. This could be the year they push district 7 a bit though.
Leslie County
They finished last year at 9-3 and only lost 4 from a squad of 51. I don't think any of the 4 were big time contibutors though. I look for them to win the district and give dist 7 all they want.
Shelby Valley
They went 9-3 last year as well. They however lost 11 from a squad of just 43. I think one of those was a pretty key player as well. I still think they have enough to be district runners up.
Prestonburg
A proud program that finished at only 5-6. They however only lost 8 seniors from a squad of 42. This team could push into the district runner up spot but, I look for them to finish third.
East Ridge
Finished up at 4-7 last year. They however return 42 players from last years squad. I think they should have enough to finish as number 4.
Allen Central
Finished up at 5-5. They lost 4 from a squad of 32 and I look for them to hold at this position.
Betsy Lane
Again, the numbers say it all. They went 0-10 last year. They only return 25 players this year from a squad of just 30.

Nice job, 55. After reading this, a couple of things stand out to me.
1st, Leslie Co. Only losing 4 kids from a pretty solid team. They could be a surprise team from the east this year.
2nd, Glasgow basically returns everything from last year and I do know they have a big time RB prospect returning. They should definitely improve from last years .500 season.
3rd, LCA returns a lot and they always play a top notch schedule, so, their record may be deceiving, but, by playoff time, should be right in the mix with NCC, Danville & Leslie Co from the east.

After reading 55's rundown by District, here's how I'd rank 2a going into the season:
1) Mayfield
2) CAL
3) Desales
4) LCA
5) NCC
6) OB Catholic
7) Leslie Co
8) Danville
9) Glasgow
10) Somerset
11) Butler Co
12) Lloyd Memorial
13) Shelby Valley
14) Cov. Holy Cross
15) Murray

I'm glad you like it. I've had some free time on my hands. I agree that LCA is going to be a handful but, much like last years Danville, I think NCC will tame them.
07-24-2016, 06:34 PM
So that's why you are flip flopping on your opinions. You need to stay sober on your free time 55. Just busting your chops great thread 55.
07-24-2016, 07:33 PM
Danville and LCA will both be good. Don't discount Somerset, 8 returning both ways, most of which have been starting since they were freshman or sophomores... They will be very very good. They played within a touchdown of LCA (arguably should've won on the road) and two touchdowns of Danville (something LCA can definitely not claim) last year. Wouldn't even consider them a sleeper as much as a region 4 contender

Jumper, did they lose one or both of those big backs. They run hard and have good speed.

They lost neither

They are pretty impressive. I watched some film on them. That will be a big help to the bunnies. That is truly a tough district.

I would say stick to your own district.

I certainly won't count them out.

That's a great breakdown, thanks! Wish my Yellowjackets were in another District. They'll be much improved over last year, but a Danville, LCA, Somerset district is some tough football. Good luck to all teams!

District winner will be decided between LCA and Somerset. I read a lot about skill, but Somerset has now got a big line to work with being very strong and great size with experience. With the new QB transfer:HitWall:, Doan, Cornetts, and now a line not to forget a nice defense it will be a year the Jumpers explode. Yes I been spying on the team across town lol

That is really what counts. The bunnies also have two really good backs.

I think ur wrong about prestonsburg they only got 24 players this year total. And Leslie county lost their starting quarterback and 2 of their main offensive linemen so they have some work to replace those. Allen central I look to surprise some teams this year give the district a run for their money. They lost one starter that was a key player last year on defense. That's my thoughts on it all tho
