Dimebag Darrell from Pantera before he was killed.

Dimebag Darrell (Pantera, Damageplan)
Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society)
Gary Holt & Rick Hunolt (Exodus)
Michael Amott (Arch Enemy)
Yngwie Malmsteen
These are my favorties. But for pure guitar skill, it's very, very hard for me to place anyone above Yngwie Malmsteen.
Also, for any Dime fans out there. Rebel Meets Rebel will be out in 65 days. Band includes Dime, Vinnie, and David Allen Coe. The clips I have heard are down right awesome. DimeVision will be out sometime soon as well. A movie that shows a lot of Dimebag playing guitar, and just living life.

I'm not much of an 80's rocker or into punk rock and that stuff. but i do play guitar so i listen to contemporary country, contemporary rock, blues rock, jazz etc...
The best mainstream (and i use that term loosley) guitarist today is Brad Paisley. He's not like some where they only play fast for a couple seconds. This guy can play lightning fast and consistently for a looooong time. if you don't believe me, give his song "Time Warp" a try. He's my #1 influence for playing guitar. not exactly saying he's the best in music, but he's in that upper echelon.
My other favorite is John Mayer. He is incredible
of course some other honorable mentions for me are players like BB King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix.....etc

Everyone in this thread needs to download some Yngwie Malmsteen right now.
It may not be your style, but his talent is amazing. Get videos if you can.

Malmsteen's talent is surpassed only by his ego.
I'm fond of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Jimmy Page, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson (who is my #1 guitar hero), Chuck Garvey (of the band moe.), and Jake Cinniger (of Umphrey's McGee). They're all pretty incredible.
