For Perry Central, the red came from MC Napier, the black from Dilce Combs. Gold was incorporated for the first few years but it was mostly abandoned by the early 2000's, not sure why it was part of the scheme. Commodores is homage to the namesake of Hazard & Perry County, Oliver Hazard Perry.

I know that Allen Central & South Floyd polled the community and had a combined Student Council that decided on the School colors, Mascot and Name.

Floyd Central Jaguars... I believe the colors are Green & Gold.

Blue/Red Wrote:Trying to find out about Letcher central colors. Letcher high was blue, whitesburg was Orange and black and neon was purple. So the colors must have been selected not representing and closed school.I know the school was almost called pine mountain high school.

Colors and mascot as well as the name of the high school were voted on by students in the county.

Somerset's nickname until October of 1916 was simply the "Wildcats," but after they scored 51 points against the Louisville High School (now Louisville Male) famed "Briar Patch" defense, Louisville sportswriter Johnny Head likened Somerset's players to "Brer Rabbit" from the old Uncle Remus tale about the briar patch.

They've been "Briar Jumpers" ever since.

Love to know how they got Pirates. It just sounds right, though!

your Grandmother told me she was in school when they changed to red & white because of Williamson being maroon and white.......they were big rivals back then.

I believe shelby valley wildcats came from the merger of Dorton wildcats (red and white) and virgie eagles (blue and white).
Tooked the nickname of dorton and colors of virgie.

The big conspiracy of the time were the initials of the school. SVHS or "still virgie high school".

baller1989 Wrote:I wish I had a dollar for every time I was asked about the color scheme along with the mascot at Williamsburg, but I really don't know the answer?? I was told at 1 time Williamsburg had colors that were yellow and black and thru time transitioned into the orange & black. At one time, the school went w/ an orange and blue (Florida Gators) scheme but that was because the band actually created that animal when they purchased band uniforms w/ blue on them, so the rest of the school had to follow suit. But since the 60's as far back as I remember, the color scheme was always orange and white trimmed in black... just in recent years has black become a dominant color... I hope to have you more of an accurate answer soon though!!! GOOD THREAD!!!

hard to believe the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets have always been orange. I wonder who made the decision Smile

AtlPirateFan Wrote:My instincts would say it was due to Williamson. Have to remember getting across the mtn to Pikeville used to be a chore and Williamson was right down the road.

I had forgotten how it was the first time I was there before they built the new road.

Did you know that the University of Kentucky had a light Yellow in their original color scheme......

The University of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892. Originally, however, UK students had decided on blue and light yellow prior to the Kentucky-Centre College football game on December 19, 1891. The shade of blue, which is close to a royal blue, was chosen when a student asked the question, "What color blue?" At the time, Richard C. Stoll (who lettered in football at UK in 1889-94) pulled off his necktie and held it up. The students then adopted that particular shade of blue. A year later, UK students officially dropped the light yellow color for white.

And here is how UK became the Wildcats......

The official nickname for the University of Kentucky's athletics teams is "Wildcats." The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909, on the road. Commandant Carbusier, then head of the military department at old State University, told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had "fought like Wildcats." Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University.

Paducah Tilghman Tornado
colors blue and white.

There is some dispute about how and when PT got its mascot and colors but our local paper first used the name Tornado in 1924. However they had already been playing football for 20 years by then.

One story I heard is that an out of town newspaper said "Paducah blew through our boys like a blue tornado".

That's as good an explanation as any I guess

It is interesting that some posts above have similar stories about their teams being named by opponent's newspapers.

I think pike central got there colors from johns creek and mullins joining together

The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets having orange as their color is odd. But let's not forget Whitesburg High School was orange and black and they were the Yellowjackets.

NEXT Wrote:Pikeville's colors are Maroon, White, and Baby Blue, correct?\

Where did the Baby Blue come from and why?
Someone told me once that the baby blue WAS originally used way back in the day for a few years, which is why they used it again beginning with their trim around the white in the basketball uniforms back in he 80's for a short while. But I've never seen a story connected with it so I'm not sure that was true. Maybe someone like Panther Thunder might know more than me about that. But to my knowledge, it was always been Maroon and White other than those few misguided years where some blue was used with basketball. I always hated that, FWIW.

Paintsville's nickname came from its early days when the Sabre Toothed Tiger roamed the white sandy banks and crystal blue waters of Levisa Fork and Paint Creek...our school is old.😁

At East Ridge we had a popular vote among students from the three schools

Feds Creek Vikings (Indigo Blue and Yellow)
Elkhorn City Cougars (Royal Blue and Gold)
Millard Mustangs (Brown and Yellow)

The school name was originally "Pike County East" and the mascot was not decided upon. That's why the original jerseys only had the words "East" wrote on them. Mascot ideas were still being debated at the time. Mountain Lion was a popular opinion...(But someone brought up the suggestion, isn't a mountain lion the same thing as a cougar). I remember the Patriots and Vipers were also suggestions as well.

The school eventually adopted the Warriors and Navy, Columbia Blue, and White as the schools colors and mascots.
