Not sure if this is true but I know there is a big push by some up there to move Bartley in as HC so Shelby Valley can save an English or Math teacher. Personally I think the Sheldon Clark game was the best I had seen Valley perform all season but it will definitely be interesting to see what drives the decision make up there.
Justice will be the next coach there!

Elisha Justice. And he would be the best choice but Valley is having to cut teachers because of overstaffing so hiring another one would not help. Heard today from a source at Valley that Hicks would definitely not be on the pricipals rehire list and a reliable source at the BOE last week said if the principal does not protect him in the allocations he wont be given back to them by the board just because he is a coach, especially when there are other teachers in the area and feeder schools more than qualified to fill that role. Based on how the situation looks Bartley looks like the logical choice.

I doubt your sources have a clue. May be wishful thinking by 1 or 2 people or SOMETHING else . SV will not throw their basketball program down. Justice is where he will stay and Bartley is certainly not ready.

LOL. M.J. Your def close enough to know the truth, shame you don't like to tell it or hear it. But the facts, and also when the principal makes the recommendations will be PUBLIC RECORD, is that the principal met with all teachers two weeks ago and told them that he had to make several cuts, for sure he would not be asking the board for 3 P.E. positions and it would be up to the board to hire them back, of the two that don't have tenure, one won the region in football so I am speculating it will be the more controversial of the two and according to parents and fans its more than just 1 or 2 that don't like the latter for various reasons. I can mention all the reasons I have heard if you like? but I don't think it matters. Several people not just one or two at Valley told me this was true. So with that speculation I asked the only board member I know, and the board member told me he would not be hired back, now he may be lying, or may not have a say in the matter, but what he did say was that a lot of teachers did not like him at Valley, again I can mention all the reasons if you like? but it doesn't matter. What he said was the board would not be in favor of hiring him back at the expense of English and Math teachers and that if anyone was given back to the school by the board it would be content teachers who had 30+ in some classes and worked hard for 6 periods a day. I am assuming that was a shot at Hick's schedule but I really don't know what that is so I can't speculate on that. But I will argue with you again and say that Bartley is just as ready as anyone. He told me he just let the boys play again Sheldon Clark. I think a good coach knows when to control and when to let it go. I also know that by hiring him Valley does not need a teaching position to go with it. And I also don't believe by hiring him they 'Throw basketball down", many might argue they are trying to get it back. I could be wrong, the board and the principal may choose differently when the time comes, but that is what I have heard from some VERY reliable sources!

The schools do not know who will be back or will have to go yet. SVHS has been in this position before with too many teachers and the board has allowed them to teach half time at SV and half time at Dorton or Valley Elementary. There is a lot of politics going on at the board so right now it is impossible to say who will be back and who will have to leave. As of now Hicks plans on being there and the school plans on him being there as well. Off season work outs have already been planned. As for Bartley he will be a fine head coach if ever given the chance but as most know in the Valley chances just don't happen a whole lot for young people here in basketball.

My sources tell me that one PE teacher is not a teacher at all but a "dean of Students " or an assistant in charge of the lunchroom area. Not wanting to argue as you say,but I hear they have 4 there, not 3. One was thinking of retiring but has changed his mind and has said he will take care of his family. I hear all PE teachers sit in lunchroom through all lunch periods. I think PCC has the same number of PE teachers or more. Football coaches and basketball coaches are normally PE teachers and this will continue. Some Special Ed are also. I have no problem with this as long as they do their job as a teacher first, not sit and work on football plays all day. Students can be very observant!!! School should be school, not play time for adults. Winning a region in football should not be a reason to let the coaches do nothing as teachers. In the end I am not close, but I know kids who are. They will all be back, and IMO Bartley is as about ready to be a HC as I am to being a airplane pilot.

The Dean of Students is more of an assistant principal position who deals with disciplinary issues the majority of the day. I'm fairly confident he has nothing to worry about with his job.

I am not sure about Eric Ratliff's actual title. He is the dean of students and works extremely hard. The last football coach was also the dean of students and he was listed as a career teacher. As for the four you mentioned. All those guys work at teaching, and being the Dean. You will see them leading workouts, dancing with classes, and having health classes, etc.... The administration (Napier) would not allow any teacher in that building just to sit around and work on plays. They are not a distinguished school for nothing.

Isn't all coaches hired as teachers first? I don't know any high school coaches that make enough money to live just being a coach.

Just noticed the time of your post, you must be hard at work, like you say they are. Only one of those has ever lead workouts and dance and one goes to health room for part of day. Nice of you to defend your neighbors.

Yes thank god for the P.E. Teachers who are raising test scores by making students walk in a circle upstairs in the gym or playing basketball. If not for their efforts and teachers like yourself who use double negatives (not for nothing?) that distinguished school would be just a dream.

Those of you that appear to know what is going on at Shelby Valley, maybe you could enlighten me? Is there a new ball player there?
04-28-2015, 05:46 PM
Well according to sources the kid has been at prep school and transferred in... Awfully fishy I think.. He is around 6'11 235 pounds and handles and moves relatively well for his size... With this kid paired up with hicks ability to get the most out of his talent they are easily the favorites now in the 15th.

He is 6'8 actually and yes he is a very talented basketball player.

Is the 6'8" the player from Mississippi cause I was referring to the German that came in also or well has visited the school.

There are alot of politics involved but I disagree one thing. I don't think Valley, and some other schools in eastern Kentucky, have been in this situation before. Population and enrollment numbers continue to decline but overall the number of tenured teachers has not. As you said chances for the younger generation are few and far between and not just in basketball. Common Core comes into play now as well. Some tough decisions may have to be made that would have never been thought before to meet requirements.

I tried to warn you folks about Hicks and transfers. I wonder what sophomore junior or senior whose parents have fundraised for years and been there every day loses their spot.
How does a kid come from Jackson Missippi to SV and manage to find housing with another players family before the transfer, without it being arranged by the coach. Did Mr. Swindle happen on a young man in Jackson Missisppi, get close enough to him that he decided he wants to give him a good home, and just so happens he is huge and a good ball player. More likely Hicks went looking, found one, asked Mr. Swindle to keep him so he doesnt break the rules and can keep lying to the other parents that he had no part in bringing in kids to play over theirs.
Sorry Valley born and raised, take a back seat. Work hard on the kettlebells and work hard on raising money, but instead of coaching you to be the best or giving you a chance to play for your school we will recruit the best when the time comes.
But dont you folks worry he will be hired back even if the district lets go of every math and english teacher they have cause he has sucked up to all the right people. The faculty are even making jokes now about how his schedule is now 3 Classes of But Kissing followed by 2 Periods of "Uncle Billy" stories and then Basketball Class.
04-30-2015, 04:10 AM
You tried to warn everybody? Hahaha, about players not being able to buy their way into playing time by raising the most money? Only at SV would somebody complain that their kid isn't getting playing time after they fundraised the most money. Coaches are paid to win. Transfers or not if kids are good enough they'll get to play. You warned about transfers? Ho many have they had? Not like he's been shipping them in by the dozen or anything. I love how personal and whiny the SV fans are about their coaches.

Hearing now that Rowe is retiring so now there are just two PE teachers on the chopping block. Hearing also from some parents and teachers that the Napier/Hicks relationship is not what it used to be. Sources say to promote himself to the kids and parents he through Napier under the bus telling them all in the locker room and boosters meetings that Napier offered him 3000$ to offset his moving expenses when he moved to take the job but Hicks turned him down saying it wasn't right and he wouldn't take money from kids or operate that way and he has told them that now he has had to battle with Napier to get things basketball needs but thats what he does cause he works hard for them and he will continue to battle. Not wise for someone in his shoes.
In other news I am hearing many Pikeville big wigs are trying to get E. Justice to Pikeville and bring his Norwegian. Heard they are going to take care of his wife with a job too and that he has told them he wants it but cant take it til he gets his teachinng certificate from Alice Lloyd. Im guessing even if he can't get a certificate this year Bart Williams is just a placeholder til he does.

Just a thought here, you(shady) and A little rusty start a petition that plainly states we don't want any new students enrolling at SV esp. If they can dribble a basketball and are males. It seems to be fine if they are female e.g.(begging Profit to come back)
Not satisfied as a ex-player or ex-coach or as a player denied playing time ----TRANSFER!!!!!!!
