What is Southwestern's excuse? I mean they can't even hang with a team that JC has defeated 5 of the last 6 games even after refusing to play unless they can have the home field advantage each of those years.
JC was also in the a very tough district with Russell and Belfry from 1978 to 1986. That 3 team district produced 4 teams to play in the 3A title game in a 8 year span of time. Keep in mind back then only one team went to the playoffs and there was only 4 classes! That 1978 Russell team won the 3A title and the 1979 Belfry team was 3A runner-up, throw in the 85' and 86' Belfry 3A runner-up teams too. That 1978 Russell team didn't exactly blow JC off the field in a game I remember very well, Russell beat a very game JC team 14 to 0. For a program as new to football as JC was in the late 70's and early 80's JC more than held there own. The great 1985 Belfry team beat JC 28 to 14 in another game I remember well, had a Johnson County kid named Joey Couch not went to Paintsville that game could have easily been different!

The truth is, Johnson Central did not become a decent progrAm until after Bill Musick was hired. Before that, no coach was around long enough to build a program. JCHS had a few decent seasons pre-Musick, but Musick and Matney built the program to one that could compete with schools its own size.

What makes you a expert on JC football? Did you eve play for JC??? I don't understand why you get on here and act like you know everything about everything. TRUST me not only are the fans of other school sick of you on here most of the JC fans are too! I don't understand why you claim to be a JC fan then get on here and insult every player and coach form the late 70's and 80's era of JC football. The truth is JC had a 10 win season in the late 70's that included to ALL-State players in Jerry Butcher and Tim Gillispie! Spike Berkhimer had a heck of a team in 1983 that finished the year 8-3. Spike had a bunch of years over .500! Spike was able to put a defense on the field that held a Paintsville team with a SEC athlete Toney Mays to ZERO points in regulation! The 1986 JC team ended the year at 3-8 but they managed to do something that even Matney has only done 1 time. They Beat a district Champ Clay CO who was competing in the Same Class (3A) as JC! Only one time has a Matney coached team beat a district champ for the same class they were competing! That 86' JC team had 2 Kids go on to college and win National titles those being Steve Estep and Chris Deaton! Like I said not only is most of BRG getting sick of you so are the JC fans!

Like I said not only is most of BRG getting sick of you so are the JC fans! All anybody needs to do to see that I am right about Johnson Central's football program is to look at the scores of the Apple Bowls against a 1A team that has never won a state title. Johnson County has always had superior talent to the Paintsville district, but weak coaching and politics drove enough good players across the creek to allow the Tigers to dominate the series for years.
That changed when Steve Trimble hired Bill Musick and Coach Musick began working with the elementary schools and the middle school to develop the best feeder program in eastern Kentucky. By the time that Musick left JC, the Golden Eagles were dominating the series with Paintsville. They did not beat Paintsville again until Matney joined the program and it quickly became clear that most Johnson County talent would be staying home to play and JC resumed pounding the Tigers until the Apple Bowl was mercifully canceled.
Nothing I have said is a knock on any former JC coach or player. Ed Vanhoose was an outstanding coach and posted the school's first undefeated regular season. Unfortunately, he was not around long and a successful season.
Pointing to a win over Clay County to belittle Jim Matney's accomplishments at Johnson Central is one of the silliest things that I have read in awhile.
I will go out on a limb and say that Clay County has never fielded a team that would have beaten Covington Catholic, let alone Highlands.

I agree with what you are saying about the weak coaching and politics that effected JC football during that time frame. Honestly IMO any Paintsville team from 1978 to 1985 wins that mighty district that JC has played in the past 5 years. Yes Matney has won a bunch of district titles but the truth is that district has been SOFT! Matney's non district schedule has been the subject of great debate here in BGR. I have been a huge Matney supporter but I have concluded that some of the HHS fans are right! Playing the school for the POOR and its sister school for the BLIND is not a good way to prepare a team for a state title run! IMO its time to step up and play some 6A schools from the city of Louisville or 5A HHS or CCH! My point about the Clay CO win in 86' was meant to show how good that 86' JC team was not belittle anything Matney has done. I mention the 86' JC team because they played the toughest schedule IMO in JC history a schedule that included Archbishop Alter Ohio and 4 other teams that played in a State title game that season or the season before plus they beat Ashland that year too. BTY way during my 4 years at JC we were 3-1 against Matney and his SC bunch. His one win against JC then came about because of a stupid call by the REFS!

Ill give you one of the best teams to never win a title. The 1990 lloyd juggernaut team. Lost to bell county in the first round of the 3A playoffs. This team had a 1A roster, smashed beechwood and beat highlands 17-7 during the regular season. Due to a filing mishap by the AD, lloyd had to play 3A football that season. Had they been in 1A like they were supposed to be, they would have been the 1A state champs.

It said top teams to never win. That's my pick. Lone Oak would be another good one.
