South laurel HC
#31
I went to South Laurel and you couldn't pay me enough to coach football in this county. You are fighting a losing battle. The principal is a absolute joke and definitely needs fired for more reasons than just this, but it would be a good start. People on the outside doesn't realize this, but there is absolutely zero feeder programs in Laurel County for football, and I mean none. They done away with Optimist football (which had become a joke.) and the kids are not introduced to football until they get to middle school. They had got some good coaches involved in middle school like Deaton, but you figure by the time these kids have gotten to middle school, they have played a ton of travel baseball and AAU basketball and have no reason to be interested in football. Or they have left and played in Corbins youth league and end up going to Corbin middle.

You dont have to have in school weights to be good

Lots of schools dont have it

Dont use that as an excuse
#33
What is the Burdine guys resume look like? I've seen his name on here a few times.
#34
I too agree with the in school weight lifting. That is just a cop out!
#35
After school is best. 45 min workouts isn't enough!
#36
An in school weight lifting program isnt really necessary. 45 min class isnt enough!
#37
Any news on when the next head coach will be named?
#38
Actually....45 mins a day (if that's the actual work out time), 5 days a week, if time is maximized appropriately. But, if a 7 period day...and, only 45 for the entire period...then, I agree; unless it's 7th period and you can run over after the bell.

Some schools are successful without it, some would argue its importance (Boyle County and Belfry to just name a couple).

To each their own.

Personally, I think it's BS not to have it. Band has it during the day. Choir. Etc. I'm sure there is some politically correct BS, justifiable reasons for why those are ok & S/C for student-athletes isn't , though.

Pros and cons to both..I will say that, from my experience.
#39
If used as extra work fine, however to many coaches use it so they don't have to stay after school. As I said its just not enough time with your team.
#40
Ehhh. I don't know. 45 good mins a day, 5 days a week...from Jan to June is plentry of time. Again, if it's a full 45 mins.

You can't completely get away from having to go after school...most current freshmen aren't able to have in school weights. Incoming frosh in the 8th grade still for sure dont, so you have them coming in.

Then again, some of it might be due to coaches wanting some time just to go home earlier during the off season. I'm fine with that.
#41
I can assure you that there hasn't been an average of 40+ HC jobs come open the last 5 years because this is such an unbelievable gig.

Many would tell you..some who have had a boat load of success, would say it might be one of the most overrated ones there is.

Many of these coaching stipends haven't changed at all over the last 20 years, if any at all...yet the expectations and involvement has.

Time is a valuable thing. Anybody that was to tell me otherwise, I don't trust....

If you have a staff who just coached football, after school off season is no issue...you can spread the wealth, while still having time here and there to get away and take care of things that we all have to do, no matter the profession. But if you have a staff who is largely made up of guys coaching other sports and para-pros, then let me put it in the words of a coach in our state who has won MULTIPLE TITLES..."Being the asshole and cheerleader year round can get old really quick."
#42
We can agree to disagree.. I just dont feel its necessary.

Completely agree. The lack of a youth program looks like a major part of the problem to me.
#44
I will agree on the lack of a youth league in Laurel Co being a major issue for any head coach to inherit.

Plenty of time. Plus most guys are there everyday. Can't count on that when kids have to stay after. Basketball, baseball, jobs, and other things get in the way time to time and sometime that kid just get tired if spending every afternoon at a practice.

Don't underestimate the importance. Principals miss the boat on it a lot. It's a good place to put a large number of kids, and help in scheduling.
#46
In school weights isn't a bad thing.. I just dont feel its enough without after school work as well.
#47
It is especially important in rural county schools, hard for a lot of kids to find a ride especially if they live out in the county, transportation to weight lifting is not a huge priority for a lot of parents and kids will undoubtedly miss the boat because of this. City/Independent schools find a lot of their kids traveling a lesser distance to school and transportation isn't that big of an issue.
#48
I still dont think that has anything to do with a coach staying at a school or not.
#49
^^^Whole lot of truth there.

Activity buses would solve the after school issue. But in a day and age where many programs are having to foot their in season transportation bill, they surely aren't going to sign up an activity bus (at least I wouldn't think).

It's not a must. As I've said, it kind of case by case situation (number of coaches, transportation logistics, a large number of multi sport athletes/football only, facility capacity, Number of actual weight classes, class period length).
#50
I am sure that wasn't the deciding end all be all factor, but I think it goes a long way in demonstrating how important football is to an administration, I don't think that in school weightlifting is a request that is too much to ask for at a school the size of SL. Any coach wants to be playing on a level playing field with the competition. If they won't give him in school weight lifting how are they ever going to give the coach 3 planning period, 2 conditioning classes to supervise and a Drivers Ed position. Ultimately, it shows which schools have a commitment to athletics and which schools that are happy with just fielding teams.
#51
Like I said in school weights is fine..but not near enough.
You level the playing field by working your kids 3:30-5:30 daily
#52
Know anybody that does that? Jan-End of May...3:30-5:30, M-F?

Honest question. Because I dont. And, I can't speak on much...but, from Pikeville to Paducah, I'd like to think I have a pretty good base knowledge on many a school at those ends of the state and everywhere in between, and I don't know of one that does.
#53
Mon-Thurs Jan until April. Scale down to 3 days until summer break.

Fly Like a Duck Wrote:Know anybody that does that? Jan-End of May...3:30-5:30, M-F?

Show me a program that maintains that off-season schedule and I'll show you a coach with poor planning and time management skills. Over the years, I've seen lots of teams that "squeeze" a 45-minute workout into a 2-hour time frame, but it doesn't mean they're working harder.
#55
Thank ya.
#56
Im not talking about weights only.
Weights, agilities, position drills, ect!

If a football team puts in 45 min a day getting better..I hope we play them😉

Listen all you guys saying that you don't have to have in school weights have no idea what you are talking about. First go down south where football is king, all those schools or 89% of them have them. BG and Highlands should have in school weights but they have a little thing called TRADITION where kids are fighting to be on the team. THE REASON YOU HAVE IN SCHOOL WEIGHTS IS TO GET KIDS OUT FOR FOOTBALL! It is a recruiting tool, kids DONT HAVE TO STAY AFTER SCHOOL to lift so more will come out and play because they don't have to stay after school 4 days a week That is why you have in school weights and with the way THE HOOPS CRAZ is in this state football needs all the help it can get. Football is a hard and tuff game to play so football needs more perks than the other sports to get kids out. And if any of you think S. Laurel or any other school with no or very little tradition don't need in school weights you are kidding yourselves. And what does it hurt a principal for giving the head football coach in school weights? It is PE credit, it is a class and you can teach kids something they can use a lifetime unlike that geometry class I had. HERE IS THE DEAL to many schools act like sports is a second class citizen, and sports represent your community across the state. So why not treat sports like you do everything else in the school system and make it IMPORTANT(why have anything if you are not trying to be the best at it?). I could go on and explain all this but I figure you all can figure out what I am saying, it is time to have these admin treat sports important because in a school like S. Laurel I would say maybe 40% of the kids are in sports and the arts.

It is enough time, 5 days a week you don't lift the same body part. 45 min is plenty if you do it right. And what is wrong with coaches not staying after school year round and getting able to go home to there family like everybody else?

Cards93 Wrote:I still dont think that has anything to do with a coach staying at a school or not.

Why don't you have head football coaches? Most of those guys would take another job that helps their schedule. Wouldn't you take a better job? So tell me why cant coaches? Should coaches be different than the other professions, should they not try and make money and have a life and get to see their families more?
#60
Again, weight lifting during school is great..but not enough.

Football is so much more than a 6th period weight lifting class.
